We went early. Great service and food.
Very slow service and understaffed. 20 min to get our drink order taken after we were seated
Great experience, will definitely come back for more!
Had my birthday dinner here and it was great!!
After not having been in several yrs, recently had dinner there with the family. I have liked and stopped at Sonsie for quite a no. of yrs, but yesterday's experience didn't quite impress.
On the positive, the Vietnamese shrimp rolls were a very good appetizer, and my wife enjoyed both her oyster appetizer as well as her mussel entree. Our waiter was pleasant and attentive.
I had one of their cocktails, a "Sunrise " something or other, which included apple wood smoke. It was very strong, seemed like a concoction just trying too hard to be unique . My teenage, daughter, who admittedly can be a picky eater, ordered a Standard Burger, which the menu described as having roasted tomato and shredded lettuce topping but she described it having too little of either. I had the Crispy Chicken Milanese, which was basically a very large heavily breaded, slightly dry, chicken breast covered with salad and a few marinated cherries. It was OK but nothing special. Rice, gnocchi or some other sort of starch on the side would have been a welcome accompaniment.
While not bad, the overall experience was nothing to get excited about. Really not as much bang for the buck as I recall and had hoped to enjoy. Probably will try one of the other many places on Newbury next time.
Had an awesome dinner at Sonsie! The food and drinks were great and really enjoyed the atmosphere of the covered patio area.
Great food and drink. Service was a little slow and the food was somewhat cold. Otherwise it was delicious and it was worth while ordering a pitcher!
A very good place for a brunch ! I love their french toasts !
Food was good, not great but good. Service was terrible. It took a good 15mins for anyone to come to our table and take our order. Once we did order, the food took a while to come, not a huge deal. But then we placed a second drink order when the food did come out. We had to ask for our drinks again because they took a while and they ended up coming when we were almost done with our food. It was a Tuesday night so it was not busy.
Sonsie has been one of my favorite restaurants for many years, and there are reasons why it’s been around for so long. The service is always on point; the ambience is timelessly chic; and I have never had a disappointing meal there. The menu is a nice balance between Italian and American, offering both hearty meals and light dishes. Everyone at the table is sure to find something to their liking!
We felt like we were in a French bistro! Poppi was a great server.
Cold coffee and the avocado toast portion was very small. Not a lot of brunch selections. Ambience is as dark as a cave.
Awesome! Lucia was a great server.
If you like eating in a dark cave, and having the host/hostess station checked out from providing exceptional service, then Sonsie is your place.
A return from the Pandemic-life is every service providers oppty.
It’s 4th of July weekend, temps in the 50’s-70’s, with rain and gloomy skies and bad weather overall. Sonsie wake up - this is your start to offering the best customer experience. When YOUR CUSTOMER walks in at 9:30am (after standing in the rain waiting for you to unlock the doors), smile, greet them, demonstrate that you are happy we picked you. There was nothing! When YOUR CUSTOMER asks if you can turn the lights up to read the menu, don’t say no. Recognize you need to provide a solution, don’t ignore it. When you serve glasses of water to your guests, actually serve 1 to each person, don’t leave them in a pile on the table for YOUR CUSTOMER to serve to others. Outfit your table IN ADVANCE of the meal with salt and pepper, so your hot food doesn’t sit waiting. All of these moments made for a frustrating experience at our cost. And when your 14-yr old recognizes bad service that’s a sign change is needed...this negative experience from the start was like a bad taste that we couldn’t get rid of. This all took place however, before we met Lucas...
BEST SERVER ALERT - enter Lucas. Lucas was our table server and offered nothing but great service. Attentive, sense-of urgency & care, no mistakes, pleasant, excellent experience w/Lucas. TO ANY OTHER RESTAURANT READING THIS - HIRE LUCAS AWAY FROM Sonsie, he deserves to work with and for better people. He’s got it right. He could train your host/hostess staff.
Final note...for those in the service industry, who are trying to work again, dont take things for granted like Sonsie (sans Lucas)...its not just about providing customer service, its about providing customers an experience - an exceptionally good one, so they return, again and again.
Amazing!!!! Sangria pitcher could’ve been smaller and food portions bigger 🤣🤣🤣🤣 if ya know what I mean
The banana fosters french toast is SO GOOD. Must have! I mean honestly what can you order wrong when you get french toast. the rum sauce with bananas was A+ and the outdoor seating is super cute!!!
Enjoyed time with friends sitting outside and having nice food and drinks. Service was a little slow but it was busy. Will be back for sure.
Really great food - we ordered a variety of items and they were all delicious. A little loud by not overwhelming. Also a little dark inside but not too crazy.
Service really was not good. We waited way too long before anyone even approached our table. Would not recommend.
In the past as I driven by Sonsie so many times I thought it was this fancy 5 star from the outside looking. My1st visit ever was for Father's Day and I was disappointed. I know people are just kinda returning back to work at the restaurants, but it's very different than before. A lot of these restaurants service and food have gone downhill. Sonsie wasn't what I thought it was.
Love the patio dining. Had several tasty small plates. Service was friendly but slow and forgetful.
Great food, great service and a unique atmosphere. Highly recommended
Great dessert n apps. Drinks were weak and brick chicken was salty.. really salty. Loved mango creme brûlée, mussels, and gyoza. Service was excellent! Wish drinks were stronger for that price.
It was a beautiful evening so we sat at the entry to the patio - really nice seating arrangement. I had a cosmopolitan which was really well made. We ordered the burgers and both loved them. But the service was so poor. We had to ask for menus, remind them about our cocktails, find them to tell them we were ready to order. Waiter was friendly, just not helpful or proactive at all.
Located on Newbury Street, we were hopeful this would be a great experience. Unfortunately with one server and a full patio on a sunday, we were less than impressed. I could have looked past the long wait to order, long wait for food (early Sunday brunch!), and limited menu options, but once our food finally came out, our impressions were set. Our side of bacon was paper thin and unevenly cooked. My Linguica Hash was all one texture, soft on soft on soft and had little to no flavor. Even after sprinkling salt and eating it with tabasco, it was bland. My husband's burger was also poorly seasoned. One bite in and we both agreed there were other places we would try next before returning. Super bummed we still haven't found a stellar brunch option in Back Bay.
Sonsie has been around a long time and has never really been known for its food, it's vibe is what keep people coming back. We sat outside on a beautiful day and watched the Newbury St crowd walk past, and it was a great evening.
The food was okay. The service wasn’t great. It took us an hour and 40 minutes to be seated, order, eat, and get the check.
Went on a Friday for brunch right when the restaurant opened (sonsie Only serves brunch on fridays) but when I ordered a dish from the brunch menu, our server said they didn’t serve brunch. Also, the signature burger is actually a pizza.
Hey, JiLaurade! Sorry for any misunderstandings it seems that has occurred! We offer limited brunch items on Friday during lunch, but a full brunch menu on Saturday and Sunday. Also, sorry for the burger mix up! The 'Signature Burger' is a pizza variant, but we do offer an incredible burger in the entrée portion of the menu. It seems that there was confusion on both sides, to which I'm very sorry! Hopefully we can help you find what you're looking for the next time you visit!
It was great! We wanted outdoor seating but had to sit inside, but it was cool and relatively quiet. Delicious food!
Our patio is always a popular spot! We're glad you enjoyed yourself and would love to get you outdoors during your next visit!
Gréât food drinks and service. Best location in Boston - cool and classy.
So happy you're such a supporter!
It was great to return to one of my favorite places after the long quarantine! We had a nice celebratory lunch, and everything was very good as usual.
We're so happy to have everyone returning! With bar seats back and a new dinner menu, there is a lot to be excited about here at Sonsie!
Our server was amazing!
I ordered the Sonsie burger, it lacked flavor.
We waited longer than expected for our waiter to come over to greet us and ask for drinks. Outdoor seating was really nice. Our waiter was lovely. I got the skirt steak and it was warm, not hot, when it came out and for $36 I was honestly expecting more. Drinks were pretty and strong. Mango crème Brule and the bread budding were good. Just overall kind of overpriced for the small portions we got.
As disappointed to hear that your visit wasn't up to the standards we know that you deserve, we're happy that you decided to take the time to reach out and help keep us accountable. We'd love to have you back and treat you to the experience we know we are capable of providing!
Loved the pizza
Both orders were very wrong and not corrected. The staff were rude and seemed unbothered.
We are very disappointed to hear that your experience dining with us wasn't up to the standard that you absolutely deserve, but we're also thankful that you're taking the time to share your experience and help keep us accountable. We sincerely hope for the opportunity to serve you better during another visit.
Fantastic experience, been wanting to go here for years. Did not disappoint
I’ve been coming to this place for almost 23 years. The service has gone down hill. I ended up walking out.
The dinner menu was a bit limited for vegetarians at first glance.. All of the entrees included meat in some fashion, leaving my vegetarian guest with only salad and pizza - but all hope was not lost, as the waitress informed us that each of the 2 pasta dishes could be made vegetarian :)
Drinks were wonderful - cocktail menu is so enticing it is hard to choose just 1 (so expect to get a second!) Ambiance was very nice, candles on the table and fairly quiet when we arrived. Filled up around 7pm, dark lighting. I must say I prefer the brunch menu but the atmosphere at sonsie is wonderful at any time of day.
Food and drinks were delicious. The wait staff was just ok - I wish they paid more attention to detail and checked in with us more. We went right before dinner rush and the food still took a bit to come out. Overall I would return again.
I met my friend after 1 long year and Sonsie made it extra special with their cotton candy drink. I was amazed at the level of quality they maintain along with tasty and resplendent food. The rest rooms are kept very clean and they follow the covid rules very strictly. I'm going to go here again and again! I just love this place.
We are humbled to read your supportive words and very proud to hear that you enjoyed your visit with us, but also felt so comfortable and safe during such an unpredictable time in the world!
