Sons & Daughters Ratings and Reviews
The best thing about the restaurant was the sommelier. She was knowledgeable, creative, and very personable. The food was just OK. Ideas were good but execution was a bit heavy handed even though it looked great. The tab was way too high. I've been to higher priced prix fix restaurants but one needs to feel you get what you pay for and they fell short.
Very impressed. The service was excellent, the atmosphere quiet and cozy and the food was so artistic, creative and delicious. Two out of four of us.are vegan/plant based and we were so impressed with each and every dish we were served. It was fun being able to compare the vegan and the non-vegan dishes. Thank you so much for such a memorable evening!
From the caviar & champagne to the chocolate Grenache & all 9 courses in between these two, each dish was truly unique in presentation & taste. It was definitely one of the most enjoyable dining experiences I've had. And I cannot say enough about how great the staff is. They were very professional , knowledgeable & friendly. Will always be a go to restaurant when I'm in San Francisco!
Came here for my Wife and I's anniversary and Sons and Daughters did not disappoint. The food was excellent - the ingredients were fresh, the combinations of flavors was fun and exciting, the pairings with the wine were on point, and the portions were perfect - when we left we weren't overly full but also not hungry. Everyone who helped serve us from our server, the sommelier, and other staff who helped bring out cutlery, fill water, etc... were all very friendly. The atmosphere was fancy, but also warm and friendly which was a great combination. My wife wanted to make sure I mentioned the chairs were also very comfortable. The price seemed fair for the experience. Definitely not something we would do more than once a year or so, but a great time for a special occasion. We would definitely recommend this restaurant to a friend. Thanks Sons and Daughters!
Small plates were amazing. Wine was fantastic ( Kudos to an amazing sommelier). However, the Trout was mediocre. Skin was not crispy enough and raisins were overpowering the fish. It felt as if they just substituted trout for something like gamey to make it a pescatarian dish. Expected more from this level. For the money, every course should have been mind blowing. Great place, but needs improvement if aiming for that second star.
Contrary to other reviews, we had no issues with overly salty food. Everything was prepared to perfection for a fantastic experience. The Sommelier was perhaps the highlight of the evening - she was knowledgeable, responsive, and clearly cared for her craft. Very willing to have a conversation about the wines she was pouring. Pricing is perhaps not quite on-point for value, but regardless all five of us had an excellent evening.
Wonderful meal. We have had other tasting menus that become overwhelming as the meal continues. This was never overwhelming. The portions are just the right size, and the balance perfect. It reminded us of some great meals we had in Japan - - great variety in texture, taste and smells. We loved it all, and were constantly surprised in a good way with unusual pairings. Service is warm and responsive. Excellent experience.
We had our 10 year anniversary dinner at Sons and Daughters. It was a fabulous experience. The nine course tasting menu was fresh and brilliantly assembled. Some of the things the chef combined you would never think to combine - but they were wonderful. Every single bite was a joy. The bread courses in-between were amazing as well. This place is very small, with only around 28 seats. It's not cheap by any stretch - but worth it for a special occasion.
There were 4 things on the menu I normally wouldn't like: raw oysters, bell peppers, melon & eggplant. Each of these came prepared in separate entrees (not together in one dish) and it was so good! I was totally shocked at how much I enjoyed them. It was an excellent dinner.
This is a tasting-menu restaurant. The food is very good, creative and interesting. I did the wine pairing, which made the experience even better. 9 courses, 8 wines. It was fun to learn both about the food and the wine, and why each wine was paired.
In spite of the $150 price ($89 for the wine) I felt that this was a good deal.
I was by myself and still enjoyed this wonderful experience.
My wife and I went to Sons and Daughters for our 9th anniversary after just moving to the Bay Area. We loved the experience. We typically go to great restaurants for our anniversaries (Per Se, Mini Bar, etc). Sons and Daughters was a great addition to our list.
The meal was good but not exceptional. One dish was actually not good at all. When we received our commemorative take-home menus at the end of the evening, the dish that neither of us liked was not on the menu. Made us wonder whether the dish we disliked had been added at the last minute because they ran out of what we were meant to have. For close to $700 total for the meal, wine and service, it felt overpriced to us. We had been expecting a more exceptional meal.
In a word , Disappointing. My wife and I had been looking forward to our evening at Sons and Daughters. While we aren't full on foodies we have come to appreciate the experience at a Michelin starred restaurant.
First the place is cool. Great vibe. Cozy
Service was over the top. Had it not been for the spectacular service I would have given one star. Special call out to the sommelier who knew her stuff and was incredibly passionate and knowledgable and fun ! In fact it was the wine pairings that made the experience.
The food was far less than I would expect at a good restaurant let alone a Michelin star restaurant. The bread and butter were all amazing. By far the best part of the meal. Seriously. Really amazing. The rest of the meal was bland , didn't seem fresh and generally unimpressive. The presentation was uninspired. The commensurate contrasting colors on each dish but no contrasting flavors. While I can't even recall most of the nine plates , I do recall a piece of overly salted beef ( which was tender and perfectly cooked I will say ) sitting on what looked like a spoonful of baked beans. Buried under a leaf of lettuce were over cooked dry pieces of what seemed to be Safeway bought sausage.
Sadly, I honestly don't recall any other the other items. I do remember the $600 bill for the two of us and recall wishing we had gone to Lazy Bear for a few bucks more.
I hate giving a bad review to a place with such great people. Service was over the top. Chef needs to find fresher ingredients and focus on interesting flavors. Thankfully for the sommelier the meal was carried by the wine and her delivery !
