Sono Japanese Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
This was our second time to Sono and both experiences were exceptional. We look forward to the next time. Our server's timing was perfect. Not obtrusive, but always there to pour the wine and keep the table fresh. The sushi was perfectly prepared and prices are quite reasonable.
The hostess bumped the table, spilling my beer all over me, and barely apologized. Also, I swear the rolls get smaller every time I dine here. I get you want to maintain your high margins, but $15 for a roll that keeps getting smaller and smaller is just ridiculous. You’re going to start driving away customers.
Best sashimi in town. It's hip and noisy so if you want a more laid back ambience, go early. I haven't ever had bad sushi rolls or sashimi here. Lots of finely shredded crisp daikon, pickled ginger without the pink dye, wasabi packs a punch. Octopus appetizer also highly recommended.
I had an absolutely wonderful experience at Sono. The wait staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. The menu was well priced (for the customer). The quality of the food was well beyond expectations and I now have an all-time favorite spot in Raleigh. Visit Sono and I promise you that you will be back soon after. Thank you Sono!
This was a great experience. Service was great and food was even better.
Miso soup was amazing, I don't know why, but it was better than most.
The house made Gyoza was fantastic. The sushi was the best I've ever had. Better than Morimoto NYC. From the appearance of the fist, the presentation and smell and taste. I didn't even want to use Soy sauce.
Strangely they have shrimp tempura as a sushi roll ingredient, but not as an app or meal. But they made it for us on request. The street sign says the spots outside the door are for valet parking but they don't have valet service. The manager assured us it would be OK, and she was right. The sashimi was "the best I ever had in this country" according to a foodie global traveler in our dining party who also noted the good value. The sashimi was buttery melt-in-your-mouth. Daikon and microgreens were also very fresh. No red-dyed pickled ginger here. Grilled octopus is a good indicator of how good the kitchen is, and it was really good. We'll be back, especially for BOGO rolls happy hour. I hope you give Sono a try!
Fantastic sashimi and sushi with the omakase being terrific overall. The chicken yakitori that was fried at the end is a must! Service was very good initially, but then slow when the restaurant got busy later in the service. Also incredibly loud and the backs on the booths need to have better support since you feel the person in the booth behind you. Will return, but would likely prefer sitting in the main part of the dining room.
Took my Fiancé for Birthday dinner. Food was excellent and wait staff was attentive. Noise was moderate and not a bother. Excellent choice for pre-show dinner. Close proximity to the Performing Arts Center. Had the Bento box and enjoyed it thoroughly. Enjoy!
Good sushi and fresh sashimi here. Tab for 2 people (with cocktails) ran about $90 before tip, so the price was reasonable given the downtown area. Service was ok--waitress was decent but the bar was a little slow with our drinks. Once the food came out all was forgiven: edamame was perfect, yellowtail tasted great and the rolls were awesome. I'd eat here for lunch, or just not order drinks next visit so I don't have to wait so long.
I think something has changed at Sono recently. Previously I never minded paying more money for sushi but after this visit I will think twice before coming back. The rolls are much smaller and I don't think the fish is of the same quality as it was previously. The drinks we ordered were good but the bar tendered took 15 minutes to being is water after we asked for it twice.
We went to Sono based on our love of Sushi and our very good previous experiences. However, on this evening we were very disappointed. While the edamame was very good and plentiful, the main course was delicious but surely not plentiful. We got four different items to split among the four of us. There was not not enough food to share and we spent almost $100 with the tip. It felt like we were eating and sharing some appetizers rather than the main course. At other sushi restaurants for the same amount of money we got much more food to share. We left there still feeling hungry. It also took a long time for us to get our food. Afterwards someone in our party suggested we go to Cook Out for dinner because we had not gotten enough to eat! Based on this experience we will not be going back.
The food here is excellent -- very creative interpretations of traditional Japanese fare. The fish for the sashimi and sushi is very fresh. For fans of rolls, this is the place to go. The combinations are both unusual and tasty -- for example, the Spider Roll that includes freshly fried softshell crab. The service is friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. We'll definitely be back!
