About
We chose Sonny's because it was close to Merrill Auditorium. The noise level is high and if we had known about the back area, away from the bar, we would have asked for it. The food was good, plentiful and quickly served. The waitress needed a bit more training - she spilled some water while putting a shim under the table and basically threw an extra napkin on the table for us to clean it up. Later in the meal, while pouring more water, the glass slipped out of her hand and fell into my husband's lap. A complimentary dessert would have been a nice apology. We always leave a 20% tip, but not this time.
I loved Sonny’s. I was disappointed the menu had been overhauled and is now Mexican. I’m sad to hear they are closing.
Limited menu--small drinks--poorly described food--waitress did not really describe the spice level--overall a poor experience
Dinner was awful. Appetizer and one entree inedible. Over priced. Drink mediocre. Service unbelievably awful. Took 5 mins for someone to acknowledge that we had walked in, waitress seemed inconvenienced by us, never smiled. We won't be back.
Sonny's exceeded our expectations ! Our waitress - wish I knew her name - was patient and friendly. Portion size was more than expected. Food was delicious !
The Corn Salad was exceptional as were the Chorizo Tacos. Everything was very fresh and packed with flavor.
I have been to Sonny's before and was pleased previously. But they eem to be trying to squeeze as much cash out of patrons as possible. The food and drink is very expensive for the serving size and my enchiladas were cold. A house margarita is $10 and was served in a rocks glass (and tasted watered down so I couldn't explain away the price as high quality ingredients). Because I was still hungry after my meal, we ordered dessert. Whereas the desserts at most places are shareable, both options were so small they seemed to be made in an easy bake oven. I don't think I'll be back after this experience.
Food and service were good. Filled up on the queso fondito. I will go back.
Food was good, not great, but the service was brutal and you can't hear yourself think in the backroom. Not sure that we'll be back with all the choices in Portland.
Asked for window seat , Got it. Waitress ,sorry forgot her name, she was awesome. Good accommodating attitudes really help make the evening. I believe this was our 5th time to Sonny's. My lovely bride always remarks Sonny's again, upon leaving she remarks again, that was awesome. Don't change a thing. Thank you Ben Susla Freeport
Great beer choices, and the corn salad is a must try. Brisket enchiladas with mole negron sauce were outstanding!!
The menu look ones great online but sometimes it's just good writing, right? Definitely not the case here!! Every bite of everything we ordered was amazing. I was full before I finished but I just couldn't not eat it all! If I didn't live 2 hours away I'd eat here every week.
Small menu but the sweet corn salad and queso with shishito peppers was amazing! Probably more cheese than two people should eat, but it was so good. Ambiance and aesthetic is very cool.
Dinner was great! I had the enchilada! Loved the interesting different salsa's and the pickle platter!
We made a reservation and arrived to find they had no table for us. Waited for 15 minutes after our booked table time and then we left.
So we had dinner at the restaurant across the street and it was delicious. We will never come back to Sonny's - chips and salsa, tacos, and margaritas can be had at many places.
If this place can't handle taking reservations, then they should get off OpenTable.
The menu here is limited but the eggplant tacos are to die for the service was perfect - attentive but not overbearing and very knowledgeable about the menu. Definitely worth a try
The food was outstanding. We took the recommendations of our server both on the drinks and on the food and he was spot on.
Atmosphere was very inviting, food was very good except the tortillas for the charcuterie board were greasy and inedible. Excellent beer selection. Waitress was attentive.
Had a very nice time with my co worker. Lots of great food, absolutely coming back on next business trip
Dinner was delightful. We made a 7pm reservation because it was the night before a large festival but it was not really needed. The food was incredible and our server was very nice. We ate outside but the inside was gorgeous, I am only disappointed that it took me so long to try Sonnys!
Had an excellent time! The sweet potato fries were to die for! Great gluten free options. Exceptional service.
Great new chef.
Fairly good food with large portions, but rather overpriced. Service was slow and some items on the menu were not available.
Really limited menu, perhaps that's what they are going for. The couple seated before us, didn't stay beyond a drink because of the limited selection. Doesn't look like they're hurting for business though.
Wonderful food and friendly service made for an extremely pleasant dining experience. Would highly recommend.
This place was amazing. I had done a little research and peeked at the menu early on. It superseded all expectations. Every single meal we ordered was delicious and came out fast. It was a nice atmosphere (even though we arrived late, around 9.30pm for dinner). Our waitress was attentive and smart. Everything about this experience was fantastic...including all the cocktails that went down way too easily!
The next time i am in Portland I will be sure to stop here again!
In a town with so many good restaurants, Sonny's a stand out!
Amazing location for ANYTHING any EVENT!
We were a party with members who don't eat wheat, don't eat dairy, or don't eat meat. Everyone found an item or two they raved about. Dishes were creative and nicely presented. We'll go back.
Food was great. Wish the cheese sauce appetizers could also be salsas. Mole chicken enchiladas were delicious
Very limited choices for food. Drink menu was good. Description of entrees was not very helpful. Not a good place for kids- even those that eat adult food. Overpriced for what you get.
Had dinner after a movie. Great new additions to menu. Two of us had the duck and the other person had the rack of lamb. Great flavors- little fat on eitherof the meals. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. Would recommend
Nice dinner - good food and very cozy. Recommend swordfish tacos and the hummus
Good food, service and ambiance. Easily accessible to Merrill Auditorium if you're looking for a place to eat before a performance.
Drawback-- very limited dinner menu.
We didn't care for the menu. Just paid for our drinks and left. Host and server were great.
If you haven't been to Sonny's in a while you should give it another try. The new head chef is doing great things with the menu and the drinks are amazing as always!
Went to Sonny's for dinner on New Year's eve with some friends. I have been there before and expecting the usual menu but of course being New Years they offered a special menu for that night. We started off with chips accompanied by 3 salsas. Our waitress picked the 3 for us and did a great job of combining hot, savory, mild etc. We also got the hummus which was amazing and the tortillas that came with it were the best I've ever had. For a main course my husband and one of our friends shared the prime rib board and I shared the seafood board with the other. Both boards were incredibly good and the prime rib was enormous. One of the things I like about Sonny's is the drink selections and they did not disappoint. Kudos too to our waitress who was personable, fun and attentive. Overall a great dinner experience.
Such a great place and well done menu.
Been my fav since it was FPR and it's even better now.
Everything was wonderful at Sonny's except the food choices were not to my taste. Beautiful location, ambience, service though. I'd go back for drinks and apps but not dinner.
Our server Shaun went above & beyond!
