American
Chicago's Son of a Butcher serves modern American cuisine that is as fanciful and rustic as the name suggests, crafting tempting pub grub in its charming eatery. The piggy pops fried pork belly cubes topped with avocado salsa and queso fresco and the traditional Buffalo smoked chicken wings make excellent starters. Some of Son of a Butcher's specialty entrées include the half chicken with pepita green salsa, the “straight outta DF” skirt steak with chipotle salsa and Chihuahua cheese and the butcher platter laden with barbecue brisket, braised pork, rib tips and wings. Superb sandwich and burger plates are also popular with diners at Son of a Butcher, with the most inventive options including the rise and shine burger topped with scrambled eggs, chorizo, pepper jack cheese and avocado on French toast, the roasted veggie sandwich with fresh mozzarella and the smoked gouda chicken sandwich with red pepper aioli.

I would avoid Son of Butcher for quite some time while the new owner works out the kinks. And there were plenty of them. First, I made a reservation for 6 on OpenTable about 5 days in advance. Upon arriving at the restaurant I was told by the owner that they don't take reservations and that he could not access his OpenTable account to see the reservations that were made. So we waited. We didn't wait long, to my surprise, but he brought us to 3 two-top tables. After explaining that we didn't want to sit in 3 groups of 2 he suggested we wait a couple minutes because a table outside was opening up. 20 minutes later we were seated at tables that accommodated 4 so 2 of us still had to sit at a adjacent table. Seating aside, our server seemed uninterested and getting our food and drinks was painfully slow given how empty the restaurant was that evening. The only redeeming quality of the whole experience were the tacos. If you brave the mediocre service....get the tacos.

Whisk has not done anything well with this place at all. They were out of menus, out of two items we ordered and the food that we did receiver lacked so much flavor.

Tried this based on location. We were meeting friends from different areas and this worked for location. However, we will be back for the food next time. We were a group of 6 and everyone loved the food! Service was great and the music was good, but we didn't have to scream at each other.

My friends and I went for Easter brunch and found the food to be mediocre at best. The Pound of Piggy was good but nothing particularly special. The biscuits with orange and chorizo gravy were pretty gross. Additionally, I found the host, the bar tender, and our server all to provide very mediocre to poor service. The three of them lacked warmth, attention to detail, and generally an interest in actually serving patrons. I really had high hopes for this restaurant and was severely disappointed.

We went for brunch. The bloody mary was fantastic and they have a great selection of beer. Both the piggy by the pound and the half chicken were great. These are meant to eat like tacos, so order a few items like cabbage, corn or potatoes to throw in. One of these dishes would easily feed 2- 3 people. We waaaay over ordered. The biscuit with the chorizo gravy was also very flavorful.

I have to admit I had high hopes for this place. Specifically, I couldn't wait for the Piggy by the Pound dish. I was extremely disappointed that for an 8:15 dinner reservation they had already run out of it ....... We ordered about 75% of the rest of the menu and it was all good, but not great. If you live nearby, this would be a great place to stop in for a casual meal, but not sure our 15 minute Uber was worth it. Maybe this review drastically changes if the Piggy by the Pound had been available!

Been here twice. This restaurant represents where the Avondale/Logan Square neighborhood is headed - strong focus on quality, grains, meats, and flavor forward ingredients. Comfortable ambiance for couples singles and families. The owner puts the cherry on top. Always up close and personal with the customers. The brunch menu is one of the best in the city. Period.

I love any place that opens in our neighborhood and Son of a Butcher is no exception. It's a beautiful restaurant with great decor and great drinks. The food is getting there and can be excellent so long as you know what to order. Some of the dishes are unnecessarily heavy when they don't need to be so order with caution. Also, some menu descriptions are not always accurate so you don't always get what you order, which can be disappointing. Standout dishes thus far have been their appetizers, and salads. Unless you love decadence, I'd avoid the burger, lamb risotto or pasta - they are very heavy. They have a great selection of wines, beers and cocktails so honestly, I'd recommend this place for drinks and appetizers. Save dinner for somewhere else.

The food was excellent. More varied than we expected from something named Son of a Butcher. Bone marrow. Veggie torte. Spagheetti with duck bolanege sauce. All excellent. Good wine/beer list. The only gripe I had was that we arrived about 15 minutes early and although our table was open and ready, the hostess refused to seat us until it was "closer" to our reservation time. huh? Still, we would go back.

We went there for a Friday night dinner with friends. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and accommodating (we have one friend who is gluten-free). Drinks were inventive, fun and very tasty. We all had something different from the menu for dinner and all items were tasty. Dessert was a little disappointing, but will definitely be back. This is a great addition to the neighborhood dining options.

Butcher is a solid restaurant. We went there on a lazy Sunday evening. And if I lived closer I'd spend more time there. If you want a quality uncomplicated menu with outstanding drink this would be the place. The Sunday happy hour was a great deal, half off drafts and wine. There are better restaurants in the heart of Logan, but this is a nice little spot.

We went with another couple friends of ours for brunch/lunch and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The owner, Frank, was super friendly as was the rest of the staff we dealt with, and the menu offered some varied options that were quite tasty. In particular The pork and half chicken platters served with in house made soft tortilla shells were a big hit among all of us as we shared one of each as a table.

Son of a biscuit! Big thank you to our waitress who let me order 1 biscuit as a side even though this is not a menu offering. Let's put it this way - I wouldn't order the biscuit entree (brunch) because smothering something so delicious in gravy seems like a bad idea. Also I'm not a fan of raisins in dishes. Rosemary orange, dense, pig shaped biscuit. Opened my eyes to not-fluffy-still-amazing biscuits. Oh right, the rest of the meal. Recommend it all. Lamb sausage, beef navel, sunchoke salad, tarragon toasted almond chimichurri, serrano cocktail. Brunch. Done.

The menu is a bit interesting, in typical Chicago fashion all the items are vague enough that deciding is difficult. A couple of our group wasn't very impressed with this, but they are out of towners, so we can forgive them. The biggest downside was that the menu items we asked about were not explained adequately the first time around, and the server seemed a bit annoyed for us asking more questions. The only other complaint I have was the volume. The music was blasting at 2pm in the afternoon on Sunday during brunch. It made the experience for a group brunch a bit disappointing.

The food at Son of a Butcher was divine. Everything we had was perfect and so well made and also creative. The service and drink menu were so-so, but that may be due to the newness of the restaurant. We were in the back portion of the restaurant so it seems like we were "forgotten" at times. They may have been short-staffed, though, so not totally faulting them on that. They also don't have a cocktail menu yet so I just got my go-to drink, an Old Fashioned. It was very so-so. Hope once a cocktail menu is created the drinks will be as amazing as the food. Will definitely check this place out again after they have some time to work out the kinks.

I was a bit skeptical being that the food is not what you find nd at the butcher but what the butchers would eat himself, the leftovers. I was very pleasantly surprised by the menu offerings as not all the items are usually appealing to me. But what the heck, might as well try something new. We shared the bone marrow small plate(one of the items I would normally not try) which was absolutely delicious. It had a beet relish on the side which complimented the marrow wonderfully. The goat cheese and apple compte small plate was awesome. I could eat three of those plates by myself. For the main course we shared mussels and meatballs in a tomatoe based sauce which was very flavourful. This restaurant will become a a neighborhood favorite.

My boyfriend and I made a reservation for early Friday evening. The hostess sat us right away and our server took great care of us. She was attentive, honest, and offered the head chef for any questions she might not be able to answer. The draft and wine list had plenty of options. They started us off with a complimentary charcuterie plate, which was a very tasty ham with horseradish sauce and pickled vegetables. The mussels and meatballs were wonderful, and the chef came over during our main course and asked us how everything was. Great food, great service, great atmosphere. Can't wait to go back and try more dishes and their brunch!

Service was excellent throughout our stay with multiple people checking in on us and making sure our glasses were filled and our bellies were full. One thing I really am enjoying about the Son of a Butcher menu is the great balance of flavors. They use strong ingredients but offset them with something more calming paired in the dish. I also was seeing some flavor combinations I haven't before. I was happy with their draft list of beers with many local options. I enjoyed all food. Overall, good experience.
