Somtum Der, Bangkok's most celebrated Isan (Northeastern Thai) restaurant has opened a branch in New York. It serves fiery papaya salads, bracing herbal broths and perfectly grilled beef with a level of authenticity hitherto unseen outside of Thailand.
Amazing food! I had my birthday here and the service was great. Would definitely recommend and I'll be coming back
Wonderful space for a team lunch
Way better than normal NYC Thai that is typically loaded with sugar for presumed American palate. Wide, and to me a bit overwhelming, variety in each category. Loved the special cocktail.
Great food, great service and great value for money. Will definitely be back if I'm in New York again!
Aloi maaaaak ! Highly recommend that place - Absolutely superb
Always a great meal at Som Tom Der. The pork larb is one of our favorites- hot and fiery and with the right amount of mint to remind you that it’s not only about the heat!
Loved it! Excellent food, warm service. So glad we came.
Specialty is Isan food, an interesting variety of Thai. The papaya salad was excellent; the grilled pork very good, but not as good as the equivalent grilled beef. The crab in the crabmeat pad Thai was plentiful and though it may have been canned (I don't know) it was tasty, sizable chunks, and without cartilage. On a Saturday night it was very crowded – a youthful crowd, we were the oldest in the room – and on the noisy side.
Definitely amazing ISAN food in NYC
The food here is super flavorful and delicious. My favorite was the crab pad Thai because the crab was super fresh and the noodles had lots of flavor.
The food was fantastic. The spice level higher than you expect or what is normally the case in asian cuisine outside asia. Very authentic. It was our first time there and we could have benefited from some insights from the staff to facilitate decisions. But overall great value, yummy food, casual setting!
The most authentic Thai experience to be had in the east village at a great price point
I decided to visit this restaurant because I love their happy hour specials. From 6pm-7pm the drinks except bottled wines were half off. Fried chicken thigh was only $6 on happy hour. The value was awesome and quality of it is usually on point. This visit the fried chicken appeared darker in color than what I was used in the past, however the taste and flavors were still there. The mangosteen martini tasted like juiced up mangosteen in alcohol, pretty standard, cocktail did not disappoint. The po pia larb moo was something unique and it was not spicy and the cream dipping sauce complimented the pungent taste of the larb moo filling. For dessert I had the thai tea panna cotta which capped off all the pungent garlicky flavors I ingested with the fried chicken, larb moo and martini.
Restaurant reopens at 6pm sharp and people were waiting outside for the doors to open. Since I was sitting alone I was given the option to sit at the stool or a table. I chose the table and I felt service was more rushed. Service was initially slow but once the restaurant got busy service felt rushed especially the waitress subtly pressuring me to order more food. The larb moo spring roll and thai tea panna cotta were recommended by the waitress. I would return to this restaurant with more people to try more dishes.
Had a great time. Menu has a lot to offer. Would come back and try some of the spicier food they have to offer.
Very much like being in Thailand, with a variety of flavors for the different dishes instead of everything tasting the same.
We arrived early in the afternoon and still had to wait for service. There wasn't anyone at the door to confirm my reservation. Fortunately my friend had arrived before me and secured a table and I assume told someone we had a reservation since I got my OpenTable points. The waitress came over & we did need some time to decide but when we did she was no where to be found. It wasn't busy so I don't know where she had gone. I ordered a coke and when she brought it she put it by my friend. I felt really ignored and disrespected by her. The deep fried chicken was okay and my friend liked his meal since he ate every morsel but based on reviews I read I was expecting more, especially when i saw other tables appear to get more attention as more people arrived. I was treating my friend and asked what was the minimum tip because I didn't think the service rose to getting extra. It was all right, not expensive. My friend thought it was an interesting menu not the typical Thai food but I wasn't impressed enough to go again.
Food is the highlight. Flavor is intense and powerful.
Fantastic Northern Thai food. Pretty typical service that one would expect in Thailand. Food comes quickly, as its made which is great. Be prepared to order your entire meal when the server first comes to your table.
Best restaurant ever! Always perfect.
Our first time coming for lunch - what a treat! Lunch specials were a fun surprise. The food here is always consistently delicious - can’t wait to come back!
Wonderful dishes, great cocktails and fantastic service in a charming atmosphere.
Unexpectedly excellent food and service. On the spicy side, which we like and a great taste blend.
Love the happy hour special!!
The server asked for the tips because we didn’t give them the suggestion tips so someone ask for it. I think that’s inappropriate to ask to the customer. Because We gave the tips that for a good food and a good taste of the food but it was not for the service. Btw we had the right to give or don’t give it anyway. I’ve been there once before but nobody never do that to me.
Food was amazing, drinks were disappointing. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful
The food is healthy and delicious!
Loved every bite and the teas were also a big hit.
Not a fan. The papaya salad was not as expected. Flavors weren’t as delicious as other reviews are stating. Average at best
Very nice food and great atmosphere !
Not a typical Thai restaurant... Great food with a good selection of salad. Love the Nam Soh accompanied a Boiler Maker...
Food was phenomenal. I really don’t like Thai that much. But everything was very tasty. Now I know why reviews said their food is authentic. Definitely recommending and coming back again.
Good, although a bit confused about the combo recommendation on the menu initially.
Yes, this is the second time I've been here. Initially heard about the resto from a friend's IG post. Came and have been coming and taking different set of friends to try the resto. Maybe just add more dessert options but otherwise food was so delicious and tasty. My friends enjoyed lunch and we got the best seat too. Thank you!
Menu is very authentic for a specific type of Thai cuisine. I'm not that adventurous so my review is also based on my preference for less out there food e.g. Uncle Boons is more my cup of tea.
Some of the best food I’ve had in New York.
My first time at SomTum Der. Food is excellent at a great price. Great staff. Definitely go back.
The service is not so good, the salad was served as the last dish which is weird.
The food is too salty and spicy also the portion of the dish is small compares to it's price.
Just great! Best Thai food in NYC, very fresh and super tasty. Definitely worth trying!
If anyone wants to try authentic Thai food other than Pad Thai, this is the place!
Be careful though, if you think you can handle spicy, know the difference between American level of spiciness and Thai's. A level two spicy papaya salad with pork neck sent me to Phuket, recalling that evening when I was drenched in sweat eating a spicy salad. The pork neck is tender and chewy, with every molecule filled with sweet tang and mouth numbing spice that would kill any flu virus.
Their menu is full of the dishes you would get at a night market. Fried chicken, grilled rice ball, and spicy beef, soon would fill your belly with no room for dessert. I've learned my lesson and will save room for dessert next time.
Not very Vegetarian friendly - only 2 options on the whole menu.
Also the booths are ripped and should really be fixed. It takes away from how good the food is when customers are distracted by this stuff.
Very good food. I’m not a fan of spicy but my family is and the food was wonderful.
