Somtum Der, Bangkok's most celebrated Isan (Northeastern Thai) restaurant has opened a branch in New York. It serves fiery papaya salads, bracing herbal broths and perfectly grilled beef with a level of authenticity hitherto unseen outside of Thailand.
What Insiders Are Saying
Authenticity is the name of the game at Somtum Der, an East Village restaurant with one other location – Bangkok. Follow our Food Rundown to navigate the huge menu and avoid the mediocre dishes.
Not a typical Thai restaurant... Great food with a good selection of salad. Love the Nam Soh accompanied a Boiler Maker...
Food was phenomenal. I really don’t like Thai that much. But everything was very tasty. Now I know why reviews said their food is authentic. Definitely recommending and coming back again.
Good, although a bit confused about the combo recommendation on the menu initially.
Yes, this is the second time I've been here. Initially heard about the resto from a friend's IG post. Came and have been coming and taking different set of friends to try the resto. Maybe just add more dessert options but otherwise food was so delicious and tasty. My friends enjoyed lunch and we got the best seat too. Thank you!
Menu is very authentic for a specific type of Thai cuisine. I'm not that adventurous so my review is also based on my preference for less out there food e.g. Uncle Boons is more my cup of tea.
Some of the best food I’ve had in New York.
My first time at SomTum Der. Food is excellent at a great price. Great staff. Definitely go back.
The service is not so good, the salad was served as the last dish which is weird.
The food is too salty and spicy also the portion of the dish is small compares to it's price.
Just great! Best Thai food in NYC, very fresh and super tasty. Definitely worth trying!
If anyone wants to try authentic Thai food other than Pad Thai, this is the place!
Be careful though, if you think you can handle spicy, know the difference between American level of spiciness and Thai's. A level two spicy papaya salad with pork neck sent me to Phuket, recalling that evening when I was drenched in sweat eating a spicy salad. The pork neck is tender and chewy, with every molecule filled with sweet tang and mouth numbing spice that would kill any flu virus.
Their menu is full of the dishes you would get at a night market. Fried chicken, grilled rice ball, and spicy beef, soon would fill your belly with no room for dessert. I've learned my lesson and will save room for dessert next time.
Not very Vegetarian friendly - only 2 options on the whole menu.
Also the booths are ripped and should really be fixed. It takes away from how good the food is when customers are distracted by this stuff.
Very good food. I’m not a fan of spicy but my family is and the food was wonderful.
Seriously spicy, beautifully fresh, perfectly cooked, properly delicious. Love. This. Place.
Un peu cher mais très bon diner. Bruyant mais nous avons eu la chance d'avoir une table au fond de la salle. Restaurant bondé
Delicious Thai food never disappoints.
Not sure what ethnicity this place was shooting for but it wasn’t the Thai we were hoping for. First- no tofu dishes? Tofu is what makes thai so yummy- and after practically begging they threw some tofu on my crab pad thai but everything had to be medium hot - no mild options. Every time I asked for something the answer was No, with this passive aggressive smirk. Will I ever return? No.
great food and staff as usual! love the ambiance as well
Fun and delicious Northern Thai food. We had a gluten free person and someone who doesn’t like anything too spicy in our party of 4. Everyone was well accomodated and had a fabulous experience
As always, food was great. We went there a little early on Sunday lunch and we had a nice and quiet ambience which was very good to us. Everything was perfect!
Went back for the third time, always enjoy the food and experience at Somtum Der
Food is always great but hate that the wait staff rushes you.
Loved everything about this restaurant. Their regular spicy was more spicy than I was expecting! Definitely get the coconut milk pork skewers -- my favorite dish for sure!!
Somtum Der has some of the most authentic and best Thai food in the city. Spicy, be warned, but worth the sweaty forehead and runny nose!
Truly authentic Thai food. Consistently great balance of flavours with a genuine chilli hit!
very good food, could have more options, they don't offer chicken
Best Thai food in the city hands down. It's spicy but it is SO SO GOOD. The papaya salad is the best I've had and despite a kick the very spicy chicken wing soup is the perfect dish for a rainy day. Condesned milk with tapioca was a warm fuzzy finish to an amazing meal. 7 star experience.
Absolutely love this place. The food is always delicious and exciting. Great vibes - lots of energy but not too loud or crowded. I’d come back for any occasion.
Very good food as always. The service was excellent. I enjoyed all the dishes we ordered and will definitely go back.
Great, authentic Isam food. Very popular with the Thai set. Very loud, at times I couldn't hear my friends.
Stellar, authentic Thai food. Not just generic Americanized Thai food like pad thai- this is the real deal! Good portion size and reasonably priced. Cuisine has unusual flavors and comes very spicy standard so would avoid for people who can't handle the heat or are not adventurous eaters. Will be back!
I was very disappointed with the food quality and taste. The pad Thai was try and had no taste. The spring rolls were greasy and the spicy Papaya salad was terrible. Would never go back
Great Thai restaurant in East Village. Not your everyday Thai curry restaurant. Spicy and delicious. Great neighborhood spot.
Went for dinner.
Highlights: Papaya salad (mild), raw shrimp with chilies, pork cartilage soup, pork satay, mackerel vermicelli.
Food comes out very quickly so be ready to have your table filled out quickly!
Great tea! I recommend the lemon. Food was good and service was friendly.
Great food, reasonable prices. Love this place!
Good for nice, casual dinner. Food was okay.
Don’t expect your usual watered down Thai dishes here! The offering is vast & authentic. Lots of variations on the papaya salad. If that’s not your thing there are grilled meats, noodles, and many more dishes to try. Loved the grilled coconut rice (it’s served on a stick like an ice cream bar!). Make sure you can handle the spices when choosing the spicy level for your food. Go with a group so you can try many dishes!
Excellent food and service. We were seated immediately and never felt rushed.
the restaurant was good but not great. really this may be partially my fault. i washed Thai curry and did not properly look over the menu. THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY CURRY. also limited menu if you do not eat pork or shellfish. if you like spicy this is the place for you. also the dried beef was very good.
