So it went that in 2003, the trio moved operations across the street and named the restaurant after Mahin's grandmother, Soltan Banoo (King Lady). Today the three ladies work hard to create a warm place for all to gather, see a little of Iran (or Persia as it was at the time of Soltan Banoo) in University Heights and try Mahin's healthy, creative and eclectic homecooking.
Consistently great food and service! Reasonable prices for wonderfully prepared Persian food!!!
Excellent food, decor, and service; reasonably quick and moderately priced; casual and comfortable.
great food, cosy and friendly place, and friendly staff
Great Persion Food, Reasonable Prices. Good Value and a Good Time was Had!
We spent a tasty evening at Soltan Banoo before a play at the nearby Diversionary. The Persian food was delicious, the wait-staff was friendly, and the service was good. Thumbs up.
Food, service, atmosphere was great! We had a group of 6. We ordered 3 apps to start, hummus, dolmas and tabule. Most ordered the wild salmon plate (Friday, Saturday and Sunday special) for the entree and the curry. The food was delicious! This is great local restaurant with authentic Persian cuisine. Yum!
This is just an over all wonderful restaurant. The food is always delicious.
We are Persian and were so charmed by Soltan Banoo. Authentic setting like back home. The dishes were delightful- and each with a creative twist by the mother and daughters. Don't miss the Persian hot tea , babeh tabeh Iranian
This is a great restaurant and we have a wonderful time. The food was delicious and we had great service.
If you enjoy Persian cuisine this is your place. The wild salmon is a good choice. The wraps are delicious. Service is great! Nice neighborhood gem.
Great authentic Persian food. We had a great time visiting with each other and our server was very attentive, when need be. Will return again soon.
superb and pleasant dinner. Lovely server (Sanam) ... very fun, pleasant and professional.
Great Dinner ...
Soltan was a nice evening out. Decent priced, tasty food. Good for getting out of the house with no strings attached.
This is the perfect place for any occasion and any mix of culinary tastes. It's just as easy to eat vegetarian or gluten free, as it is to get meat or fish. And everything is excellent - ingredients, presentation, service.
Food was good and the service was good and friendly. Ambiance was great as we got there at 5:15 and few other customers had arrived at that time. Will return to this place!
The food was superb, the wait staff helpful, and it was a terrific bargain. Definitely will go back again next time we are in the area.
The lamb stew was delicious and so was the rose and pistachio ice cream.
It's always a wonderful evening at this neighborhood gem. The food is lovely, the staff amazing. A perfect way to end the work week.
Their food is very accessible with deep fresh flavors. I had a chicken kabob that was was so juicy. The dipping sauce was a great topper.
Great food, sweet servers, very reasonable prices for outstanding food. I have loved everything so far, been there 5 times.
We enjoyed almost everything about our outing to Soltan Banoo. The best was having a normal conversation over dinner because of the quiet atmosphere. No talking loudly or having to repeat comments because of noisy surroundings. Food was tasty and reasonably priced. Service was good. Beer and wine only. Parking was a problem as we were lucky to find a spot on an adjacent street.
Soltan Banoo has never disappointed. I have been going there for at least three years. The service is always great and the staff is friendly. This is a family owned restaurant and is very deserving of your patronage.
The food was not authentic Persian AT ALL! And the quality was only marginal. It wasn't tasty, the cut of meat wasn't a high grade, the rice was broken into bits and was dry (an absolute no no in Persian cuisine). It just generally made us sorry we came there. The server was good though.
We went here for dinner. The ambiance is soothing, quiet and eclectic. Perfect for a relaxing and conversation-friendly dining experience. Highly recommend the tabouleh and baba ghanoush to start. The service is a little slow because they make everything from scratch and it is so worth the wait! All our entrees were great -- specifically recommend the "recommendation plate" for people like me who enjoy salad, rice and a delicious chicken kabob. The rice dishes were all tasty and we had no room for dessert. We will be back soon!
Nothing to write home about. We ordered a wide variety of items from the menu, and everything was just ok. Hummus was straight out of Trader Joes it seemed. The entries were a bit over cooked. Prices were not commensurate with quality. I won't likely return, and would suggest heading to the gaslamp and enjoying Bandar.
One of the owners served us a delicious dinner, it was like being a guest in her home, we lived the entire experience. Try the baba ganoush
It was our first time visiting Soltan Banoo, and we were very impressed with the service and food. All dishes were well-prepared and our needs were constantly being met. Portion sizes were appropriate for the dishes served, and we easily added appetizers and dessert without being too stuffed.
Can't wait to visit again!
This is a charming restaurant. They go overboard to give you the feeling that you are so welcome...the food is interesting. A must try is the Pomegranate Soup.
There were some very unusual and tasty items on the menu. The food was really good. The place is pretty small and it's a little out of the way for visitors from out of town, but generally worth the effort. We found getting a cab back to the downtown district where our hotel was more challenging than would be ideal.
This was our first introduction to Iranian cuisine. This was a unique dining experience that we really enjoyed. The bread pudding was fantastic and the service was really great. Our only complaint, that they ran out of their desserts on the menu. This is a local gem, that if in the area it is worth checking out!
We love Middle Eastern food so decided to try out Soltan Banoo after checking out the reviews. I particularly liked the fact that it was owned and operated by 3 Iranian women (girl power!). The atmosphere was homemade and homey/eclectic, the service was wonderful and very friendly. Our waitperson (I'm guessing one of the owners) helped us choose our dishes, two of them were the weekend specials: the Ghalieh Mahi, squares of wild salmon filet in a cilantro tamarind sauce; and the Koufteh-Berenji, 2 large "meatballs" with walnuts in the center and floating in a liquid sauce. I had the Albaloo Polo, a rice dish with pistachios, sour cherries, and saffron on top of a delicious lamb shank (the meat literally fell off the bone). We went wild and
Soltan Banoo is awesome. Lots of choices for vegetarians, amazing cuisine and friendly, accommodating service!
One of my very favorite spots!
Soltan Banoo is a family-run restaurant that is truly one-of-a-kind. The food is excellent for both vegetarians and carnivores - truly a culinary adventure!
Great service, very flavorful food. Lots of vegetarian options (if you swing that way).
Despite the good reviews I'd read, I found the entrees to be bland and the accompaniments did not compliment them. They need to work up some sauces or dips to bring cohesiveness to the food. The setting is unique, being an enclosed porch, but then again, it was pretty cold. I would not go back or recommend.
The ambiance was nice. Service was very slow - it took at least 15 minutes to get water. There were 5 of us and we ordered appetizers, soup and different dinners and none of us were were impressed. This was very unusual since we love different ethnic foods. It was a disappointing experience.
It's always an intimate setting. The lamb dishes are wonderful. Lunch prices are excellent.
My husband and I shared a meal with two very good friends. One had been to your restaurant before so he was helpful with our choices. Everything was perfect! The waitress was a delight and certainly efficient. We brought a "huge" bottle of special wine we'd been saving and she cheerfully took care of the corkage and pouring. We will definitely be seeing you again!
Good food and always nice to find good for that easily made vegetarian. This is a very nice neighborhood restaurant that is relaxed and easy to enjoy. I've eaten there several times and always enjoy the food.
