Solaire offers a truly local dining destination that offers unexpected and
offbeat twists on local ingredients and flavors. The atmosphere of the
seasonal restaurant changes based on the weather—in the warm weather
months it is a playful experience centered on the indoor/outdoor bar and
the vibrant pool scene and in the foggier months guests can cozy up to the
fireplace or by a fire pit while enjoying a cocktail. Mirroring the laid-back attitude of Santa Cruz, the restaurant and bar incorporate the natural elements of the water, sky and fire in imaginative and modern ways.

An incredible DISAPPOINTMENT on a beautiful Santa Cruz afternoon around 4pm. I took a friend to celebrate her birthday by poolside for cocktails and then dinner afterwards. 2 cocktails ordered took over 20 minutes because the bartender was changing shifts and was more interested in getting her shift done. I asked the waiter twice to check and then I walked to the bar and requested service again. The couple next to us sat down and were served within 5 minutes . . . we then went to inside dining and ordered a Caesar salad with no kale. It arrived with Kale and when I stated to the wait staff that it was Kale, he immediately replied "that's not kale" and I replied "it has a stem. He took the plates back and then apologized for the mistake by saying he did tell the chef. Then I had to request my salad be taken away since the plate was dirty with lipstick. He then returned and stated "the chef is out of it today." Let's just say I was extremely displeased with our first impressions. We then ordered dinner and there was no big concerns with the exception that the fries served with the steak were cold. By the end of our birthday celebration for my friend - we just wanted to call it a night. We got the bill (THERE WERE NO CONSIDERATIONS OR DISCOUNTS FOR BAD SERVICE) and because I did not want to spoil my friends evening - I paid the bill. My RECOMMENDATION speaks for itself. In the future . . . the dining manager should pay more attention to what is happening on the dining room floor rather than chatting it up with his back to the main dining room. BTW: the specialty tequila cocktail was excellent but was over shadowed by the lack of customer service. Linda (Santa Cruz local 4ever)
We've had a nice dinner here before years ago so we decided to come here for our anniversary recently. This was noted on the reservation but not noticed by hostess or waitress. We were largely ignored during our meal even though the restaurant was not crowded at all, having to ask for water multiple times and I even got some for myself at one point. Saw other parties get seated, served, pay, and leave before they even refilled our waters once. We asked for ketchup, had to go to the bar to eventually get some. Had to check on the cocktails we ordered, half hour is a long wait. Asked for sharing plates, they brought us another small bread plate. Our entree came out completely overcooked and with less shrimp than the ones I saw served at another table. We asked for the prosciutto on the side of the salad and then found pieces in it the main dish, the kitchen clearly had plated it and then just picked it out once they read our request for it on the side (gross). The waitress was kind but green. She took our entree off the bill which was appreciated, as was the anniversary dessert. A let down for an anniversary dinner overall though. I'd recommend this place more for bar snacks and pool time than actual dinner, especially for a nice occasion. No one wants to feel ignored on their anniversary.
We are locals that tried Solarie for dinner. We usually eat in SF, so our expectations are high! We had tried it once before for drinks, which were unique and delicious. Love the guitar player, soft, not loud-so you can hear yourself talk. I’m surprised there’s not a younger crowd after 9. Its such a cool ambience, and love the option of eating outside around the pool or outdoor fireplace. We will return!
Surprisingly great food. I had their lobster panzanella salad. It was great. Everyone else ordered the steak frites and all of us were impressed. It's better than you would expect. There were some service glitches but the people were so nice and so friendly that they were easily overlooked. Plus you can eat outside by the pool if you like.
The dinner menu was disappointing , more of a lunch menu. It was a real come down from earlier menus .
Inattentive staff. Food was basic to bad. Took 1.5 hours for drinks & dinner. Ran out of the desert requested (Tues. night with 2 other tables).
My husband and I were pleasantly surprised by Solaire, both by the food and design of the restaurant. We had a late morning brunch and were seated inside by a friendly hostess. Our waitress was even more friendly and while she was attentive during our meal, she must have been almost on her break or something because she brought our bill while we were still eating and didn’t ask if we needed anything else. My husband had to ask for another orange juice and she comped it which was nice but I wonder if it’s because she was in a rush to get out of there and didn’t want to mess with the bill anymore. Once she brought the bill, we felt rushed out, especially when my husband was talking to me and she came back to ask if she could grab the finished bill which my husband was leaning his arms on. Not professional if you ask me. The food was better than we expected (I had the corned beef hash which had good flavor though the beef was a bit chewy and my husband had the avocado toast with an added poached egg on top which he said he enjoyed). It seems that Marriott must have hired someone to design the restaurant (and hotel) who knew what they were doing so it looks great at its core, but then someone added all kinds of paintings all over the walls that it seems they’re trying to sell and it makes the place look way too busy and they are a completely different style than the modern vibe of the core design of the restaurant/hotel. It would look SO much better without all those huge colorful floral paintings everywhere you look. Unfortunate given that the rest of the hotel looks so nice. Overall, an enjoyable experience but not worthy of 5 stars.
If I could give 10 stars out of 5 for the food I would. On a normal day the food is good. On Valentine's, they went all out and it was SUBLIME.
The light was too much like a cafeteria. The chair seats sag so you have to sit on the front edge of the chair to reach appropriate height - chair to table. The front edge of the chair cuts into your legs. The waitress was nervous and failed to listen to requests resulting in beverages and food delivered without key requests. The food was not timed so entrees were ariving before we completed the first course. The entrees were therefore cold. The contemporary interior design was most pleasant and promise diner guests a quality experience but ultimately resulted in disappointment. The superior feature - the French fry appetizer was amazing. Won’t be back.
They ran out of food on Xmas night
We left and did not dine at Solaire
Wonderful Christmas Day dinner service. Food was very well done, and service was friendly and attentive. Very festive, we are glad to have selected Solaire for our Christmas meal.
My wife and I went there for breakfast on Christmas Day, therefore unable to review many of the lunch/dinner categories. The atmosphere was relaxed, service with good, and we enjoyed our meals. The waitperson moved our table to be closer to a lovely gas-lit fireplace, the place was quiet and decorated with beautiful mosaic art. There was subdued background music and we were felt rushed.
We plan to return and recommend it to others.
Wait staff in disarray. Flow of traffic in restaurant is one of the problems. We had a 930am appointment and they were not ready for us.
Excellent food, not a huge variety, but good quality, well prepared and presentation. Service was a little slow, but it was not crowded for a Saturday evening.
did have a problem on arrival--I was not on the Open Table Reservation--but the delightful person put me in--said they have had problems before??
Great!! Thank you for having vegan options. More restaurants need vegan options like yours!!
Light and fluffy pancakes
First experience. The food was very good. We especially enjoyed the poke nachos starter and the lavender-infused panna cotta. The hostess and wait staff were very friendly. The portions were large for this type of restaurant. Thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
Very slow service despite multiple staff and very few customers. Some of the food was very good - like the soup and poke. Some were very dry and not that tasty - like the burgers. They made all the burgers well done although we asked for medium. They also did not have any of the yacos available.
Great service great food and an amazing view
1970s hotel restaurant. Lunch menu is sparse. Club sandwich was 80% lettuce with a tiny sliver of turkey. PBJ burger was ordered medium-well and showed burned and dry. Fries were cold. Niman ranch burger was juicy.
Bar looked well appointed. Waitress was friendly. Wouldn’t go here again since the food was so poorly prepared.
We were totally blown away - the service, the food - what an amazing find!!!
Great food. Good wine list. Awful service for the whole meal. It took 15 minutes for me to get a glass of high end wine. The food was great, but we will sit at the bar next time, so we won’t be ignored.
Great seasonal menu with innovative presentation. The salmon, beef and pork are all cooked to order depending on how each patron wants. Excellent mushroom soup. Yummy desserts. We definitely will dine here again.
Very good for conversations since there is no loud music.
Beautiful restaurant and outstanding food, drink, and service.
Good menu, tasty food, great presentation - nice! My only complaint is that for dinner - the lights are blinding bright. Turn down the lights! Make it feel way more cozy. Similarly, it was freezing in the restaurant. Everyone was sitting in their coats. Turn up the heat. Also make it feel more cozy. Those 2 little things would make a huge difference - by dimming lights and ensuring the restaurant is toasty - you change the ambience and make it something far more compelling for everyone.
The steak is good. Nice looking place.
The food was delicious . Lovely ambience. Good value! All in all this was a lovely evening.
Thanksgiving day, great food but expensive. Mistake on the order. Nice dinner though.
This is a lovely restaurant/lounge. As I expected, after reading other reviews, the service was not great. I had a wonderful cocktail called the Garden of Eden with cucumber vodka and mint among other things. I was very refreshing and not particularly strong, which I liked. The kale salad was good and we go the poke which I did not care for and was way over priced. But we sat by the fireplace and it was warm and cozy. It is definitely a spot for a romantic date.
We ate dinner during restaurant week. Decor is very arty. Bar and restaurant area beautifully integrated. Appetizers were excellent. Main course sauces way too sweet. Chocolate bombe dessert very good. Carrot cake advertised with cardamom and cream cheese frosting, neither of which was apparent in the dessert so not impressed. Great decor, food needs some tweaking.
We couldn't believe how bad the food was here. For instance what was advertised as macadamia covered mahi-mahi came deep fried with sloppy mashed potatoes. The desserts were a disgrace to a coffee shop. The cakes were extremely dry and covered with fluffy sweet stuff. The appetizers were not so bad.
I do dine often at the Solaris Restaurant and it's never a disappointment.
Worst service ,,1.5 hrs from when we were sat we still didnt have a meal. One waiter working whole room. Never again
This second visit did not live up to our memory of our first visit a few months ago. Largely due to the less enthusiastic service, I felt as though we were an interruption to a conversation our server was having with another table. Beyond that, there was a mixup in the appetizer and the additional dipping sauce never arrived. The presentation of my husband's bunless burger could have been nicer. Two piles of lettuces on the plate. A request for malt vinegar to dip the fish and chips was met with a remark that it was already on the fries... What? The extra vinegar she wanted was already on there? And then we come to mine... The Caesar Salad was dry and the lettuce seemed old somehow. Even the two crossed anchovies on top we stiff and dried out. Inedible. Then for the clams... Absolutely delicious flavor except for the fact that the salt was complex overwhelming. I shared for other opinions and even my salt freak granddaughter agreed it was way too salty. I was actually heartbroken because the first time we ate here everything was perfect and the service was friendly, and the food was perfect. Not sure I'd give it a 3rd try.
This was in the Marriott Autograph hotel collection - Paradox. The food was excellent as well as the speciality drinks. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. The decor was modern and comfortable. We ate both dinner and breakfast and everything was exceptional.
Nice room. It was the night before graduation at U.C. Santa Cruz. They were understaffed and slow and the food was awful. The wair staff idid their best but it was not enough to overcome the awful food
Restaurant was empty yet took forever to be acknowledged and seated. Even though we were literally the only table eating food somehow food and beverage service was remarkably slow
Second time... Food was very good as expected from the first visit. The hotel and restaurant are a great destination where you can stay all day over night and relax and enjoy a tranquil time away from it all. Sunday mornings on the pool/patio was great as well.
