Sol De Mexico Ratings and Reviews
I was delighted with my experience at Sol De Mexico...until I got an email from Open Table complaining that I didn't show up for my reservation.
I most certainly did keep the reservation. And my friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our lunch; the food was terrific.
Sol De Mexico needs to be more organized about managing their booking, though.
We hadn't been to Sol de Mexico in a long time but we found the food still as good as ever. We don't get into the city very often but it's worth the trip when we are craving gourmet Mexican food. We both ordered the poblano peppers stuffed with pork and topped with walnut sauce.
The food was outstanding. Not your typical tacos and burritos menu, which is what we were looking for. Authentic Mexican cuisine with a flare. The real bummer was the poor service. We were there on Mother's Day in the late afternoon, but it wasn't extremely crowded to have warranted such poor service. The server goofed on our order, so half the table ate first, then the other half ate about 30 minutes later. This isn't even the poor service I was referring to (mistakes happen and the server did bring out an additional appetizer for those that were waiting - she did feel bad). The bad service was the failure to refill drinks and check on our table throughout our meal. We had to constantly ask her as she was passing by for drinks, etc. You would think after they messed up our order they would double their efforts to make sure our water/drinks were filled! I really hope our experience was a fluke because their food was delicious. Nothing hurts a business more than terrible service.
We've visited SDM once before and the food is outstanding. The service was adequate and the food price was a too much considering you have to pay extra for table salsa. The habanero salsa is very good and spicy but not for the $2 per ounce they serve. Salsa should be complimentary considering your spending $20 or more on entrees and $10 or more on apps.
This last time we went on Valentines Day and the service was very slow. I will say the people who work there are extremely nice and pleasant, it's almost hard to get mad them for taking forever everytime we had a request. My wife wanted more salsa and by the time the server brought to us we were signing the check.
My recommendation is to go on off night and enjoy the delicious food, but be prepared to pay little extra for the little extras.
The food was deliciously flavored and service and drinks great. the only thing I would fault is the food came out sort of warm, not hot, and there were very few people in the restaurant, so it shouldn't have been sitting for very long. The appetizer platter is fantastic!
Tortilla soup was so good, my girlfriend ordered it and I almost finished it all. The sopes mixtos are great as an apetizer, my girlfriend asked to substitute the chicken for plantain. The homemade tortillas are always fresh and tasty.
All the meals I've eaten at Sol De Mexico are very good and never lack flavor. I definitely recommend this place for bet Authentic Mexican food.
This was one of the worst meals we had while in Chicago. I cant figure out all of the great reviews, unless it's all family writing them. The menu is not the menu that is shown online, the food is so spicy you cant taste anything, and the neighborhood is sketchy at best.
I noticed several previous reviews complained about the service. We found the service to be AAA plus. Never felt we had to wait for anything. The servers were courteous, discrete and thoughtful. Good selection of tequila, margaritas and beer. I make my own margarita mix and tend to be a bit of a snob when it comes to my margaritas. The house Margarito was spot on, and our second selection for drink #2 (but who's counting) was equally yummy.
The tamales were divine! Ditto for the mole. The menu item is lamb with mole. I asked for enchiladas with mole and they were more than happy to accommodate my vegetarian request.
Came here for Mother's Day. I wasn't expecting this restaurant to try and impress me. I thought it was a regular Mexican restaurant but it they try to make it upscale. The service is lousy, lack of communication/interest amongst the staff and customers. Our waiter took our order after we sat for 30 minutes and we didn't see her again until she brought desert and the bill. The food didn't have much flavor like most Mexican food does, including the mole sauce which they mention on their menu.
One of the highlights was a gentleman that came to our table from the kitchen. He clears our table and offered us more food and beverages. He also chatted with us for a bit about personal experiences.
The night ended with her our waiter handing my credit card and bill to the table next ours and she walked away, she didn't notice that she did that but I wasn't too happy about that. These people could of stolen my card but they were nice enough to have noticed it belonged to me and they returned it.
Won't come back here again.
This place could have received a 5 out of 5 stars if it wasn't for the server. We had barely sat down when the server was hurrying us to pick a drink and our food because the place was about to get crowded. My husband and I went on Valentine's Day and while we knew it was going to be busy, there were only 4 tables of couples at the time we got there. The server hurried us about 3 or 4 times throughout the night. The food and drinks, however, were delicious. I had the duck and my husband had steak. Both were cooked to perfection. The Guava Rita is the best!
We had a 7 pm reservation on February 13, 2016. However, it took the server 15 minutes or more to even greet us and take our beverage and appetizer order. She needs training with her customer service skills. She was curt. Then to top it off, our dinner wasn't served to us until 1 1/2 hour after putting it in. They apologized for being late but gave no explanation. They didn't even consider compensating in some way. Just sad.
We last ate at Sol De Mexico 2 months ago. At that time, the food was great and the service was terrific. There were few other patrons that night. Last night, we had an 8 pm reservation for 8 people. We were seated promptly. We were told that they " didn't have any menus." My daughter ended up asking the next table for menus. We receive our drinks by 8:45, appetizers by 9 pm and didn't receive our main courses until 9:40 pm. There appeared to be 2 servers for the entire restaurant. The server was apologetic for the delay in our receiving our dinners. They were out of ingredients for drinks and a main course. We love this restaurant and were excited to share it with our family. I was embarrassed by the poor service. I would recommend the food, however be prepared to wait.
This was our 2nd visit to Sol De Mexico. We loved it both times. Although recent reviews mentioned slow service, we went on the night of a 1st Chicago 2015 snowfall and were one of two tables with patrons in the restaurants. The servers were knowledgable and attentive, but didn't hover. They were out of one of the appetizers that we wanted; however we enjoyed the appetizers and main courses that we ordered. The sopes, ceviche, and guacamole were all tasty and serving sizes were ample. We were so full from the appetizers that we only ordered 2 main courses for 4 people and had leftovers. We would return there. Great neighborhood find!!
I went to Sol De Mexico, with a larger group, two times in the last month. On each occasion, the servers were kind and helpful, the food was delicious, and the margaritas were tasty. (We did have to wait quite a while for our food on the second visit so be prepared if you go on a weekend night.) Sol De Mexico is now on my husband's list of nearby favorites so we will definitely return and will recommend the restaurant to friends.
When we walked in the hostess notified us that someone had called and canceled our reservation... Not only were we confused by this we were also very sketched out... No one knew we were dining there that night.
We sat down, it took forever for someone to come and greet us and take our drink order. They finally did. Then 15 minutes later (after asking the status of our beverages) the waitress told us they were out of that drink tonight. Keep in mind there were only 4 tables of people in the restaurant. Food took forever. It was just a bizarre experience to say the least.
My daughters and I discovered Sol de Mexico through Open Table reviews when in the area a few months ago. It was so exceptional, we made a special trip back in order to share it with my husband. We love the ceviche, the freshly prepared taquitos and the the sopes, which allow you to taste so many of the restuarant's special preparations. We very recently ate at Topolobampo and the flavors here remind me a great deal of that other special meal.
charming little place. fantastic menu selection and the menu changes every 3 months. the service was incredible. The place was almost empty on a Thursday night. I believe this place suffers from being in the wrong location! The wine list is great - you can buy bottle or by the glass. The appetizers were colorful and delicious. I loved this place and would recommend that everyone try it. I am really excited that the menu changes every 3 months. This is NOT a taco joint or a typical casual Mexican restaurant. This is a higher end mexican restaurant with extremely reasonable prices.
The special V-day menu was inspired from the romantic movie Like Water for Chocolate. The cuisine was unbelievably delicious, creatively prepared and each course was more eagerly anticipated than the last. The service was prompt and personable for 2/3 of the night. The entire 3-hour experience would have been completely amazing except the services dropped off near the end and they were much less attentive in the last hour. Maybe they were tired or busy, but they were less visible, delayed drink orders and forgot the last course. Overall, I continue to be thrilled with the quality and quantity of 5-star cuisine for 3-star prices.
Had high hopes because mole chef was from former Chilpancingo. Dishes were good but not fantastic. Perhaps my expectations were too high. However service was good and very, friendly.
I also expected more from the margarita. I expected something smoother but instead got a sweet concoction I would get from a non-Mexican restaurant. I think the food is a bit too gringo not quite serious Mexican food we get from likes of (now shuttered) Cucina Mundial, Chilpancingo or Real de Catorce.
Went there on a Sunday evening, there were only 3 tables taken at restaurant, so it was fairly quiet. Service was very attentive and helpful and knowledgeable. Their recommendation for main entree was excellent. Margaritas were very good, with freshly squeezed lime juice. Prices were not high. I would highly recommend this place, and I will definitely go back!!
