Food good but not great
Servers were very good
Although staff was very attentive, the dishes were bland and way overpriced, especially for the tiny portion size. We left hungry and wound up having a second dinner. For the cost that absolutely should not have been the case. Sadly, this may be the last time that we go for the restaurant. Perhaps wine at the bar.
The main concern for this "fair" review is that the food was very slow in coming out of the kitchen. We waited 50 minutes before getting our food. The server, who was very pleasant, apologized and said that many customers came at the same time (7pm Monday). Also, when I asked for bread, the server told me that that Soif no longer gives "complementary bread" and that the bread I saw served at another table came with an appetizer. She offered us some toast as a substitute (not complementary). The main course was fine, steak served with a few delicate (and very tasty) vegetables, but no potatoes or starch. Seemed like a lot of money for something so simple. The big plus on this restaurant are their wine flights. Excellent.
Limited menu, but excellent food quality and outstanding service. However, the portions are tiny, especially the "share" dishes, which seem to be getting progressively smaller. As a result, Soif feels like an overpriced place.
Food as always is excellent as is service. Great wine list- I had tastings from Lebanon, Georgia and Greece. Server was attentive without over gushing. food was excellent and easily swaped out potatoes for more veggies. It's a little high priced, but if you want to splurge it's worth it.
Delightful, delicious..great wine at an appropriate price!!!
The price of food has gone sky high and the portions are smaller than in the past. Service is excellent, but the food has declined not only in value, but in taste - Very disappointing.
Great wines, great food, and our server, Jessica, was a dream.
Very enjoyable. The preset menu was lovely for a Valentine celebration. Dessert was amazing!!!
Valentine's day is often not restaurants' best occasion. we have enjoyed Soif more on prior occasions than this time around. we hated the loud rock music, which seemed inappropriate for a romantic evening. the food was good but not outstanding so we thought it was overpriced although the price might have been reasonable for a more interesting menu. we'll be back but not on Valentine's Day.
Always outstanding meals very creatively prepared and presented, with well paired wine offerings, and attentive and professional wait staff
It's been several years since I've been at Soif, but the food did not disappoint. We had the cheese board, spinach salad and scallops. The scallops were perfectly cooked. I thought the portions were just right but my husband thought his steak was small and was still hungry when we left. I gave it 4 stars because it was very pricely. For 4 people, it was over $300.
Wonderful experience, food amazing, perfect wine paring and super helpful staff. It was a perfect way to spend our twentieth anniversary :)
Excellent food and professional service. The "pesole" was unique and delicious. Probably the best scallops I have tasted. On par with the Taste of Yosemite we had last month and restaurants in San Francisco.
Wonderful with great kitchen and service. Good for any occasion. Really enjoyed are meal from beginning to end.
The food and service were both excellent, at a level that usually seen in Santa Cruz. All of the changes made in the restaurant over the past three or four months are really starting to pay big dividends. Outstanding!
Everything was amazing and wonderful. Cozy place for our double date and the food and wine were delicious!
Delicious cocktails and excellent food. Every single dish we tried (and we tried many) was outstanding; highlight may have been the short rib ravioli. And if you’re a bourbon fan, the bitter liberal is one of the best bourbon cocktails I’ve had in a long time. Warm, friendly service - everything was fantastic and we can’t wait to return.
I love Soif, Mondays are great! Not sure I love the new menu... the food is good, but I miss the oysters and the special hamburger!
I love Soif! New chef is brilliant. Everything was superlative.
The food continues to get better with the new chef - beautifully presented and many new dishes. The prices have gone up a lot, but worth it for some really fine food in Santa Cruz.
Wine list and mixed drinks are always interesting. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
Once again, the food was excellent. The new chef is doing a great job. But the service was spotty, we had to ask someone to take our drink order after a significant wait where it appeared that our waiter didn’t see us. Then, our appetizers were brought with the salads. This happened the last time we ate there as well. Soif is a nice restaurant but the service needs to improve, especially considering the prices.
Went for New Years Eve dinner. Advertised as a celebratory 5 course prefix meal.
When a 5 course prefix meal includes an amuse bouche and two desserts as courses...that’s a three course meal. I wish the menu had been posted ahead of time.
Amuse bouche was served right out of the fridge and was too cold to thoroughly enjoy all the flavors.
The mushroom toast was spectacular.
The short rib was tasty and comforting.
The salmon was perfectly cooked and there were some good flavors on the plate but it just didn’t come together into anything particularly cohesive and delicious. Slightly off mark. (My hubby and I shared so we got to try both main courses.)
The chocolate torte was delicious, and the accompaniment was necessary and excellent.
The petit fours were sugar on top of sugar. The chocolate was so rich that I did not want anything else sweet afterwards. If the petit fours had been an unexpected finale or wrapped up as a gift to take home maybe I would be a bit more excited by it, but it was an extremely disappointing “5th course”. The madeline was dry and too sweet. The caramel was delightful. The fruit jellies were pretty good.
The meal also felt a little rushed. We were hoping for a semi fancy, leisurely dinner focused on amazing food and celebrating the end of one year and the beginning of the next. It didn’t feel like a special occasion.
All in all it was a fine meal. But we frequent soif and had higher expectations for a preplanned New Years celebratory meal.
So if continues to be one of our favorite restaurants. The service is excellent and the staff always makes great wine paring recommendations. The food was fantastic.
We had a large family group (10 people) that included a three year old and six year old, as well as wine connoisseur grandparents, and our experience at Soif couldn't have been nicer. The food was across the board delicious, the wine delicious, and the service was prompt and so kind and accommodating to our children. Highly recommend!
Each course was special and scrumptious!i would return for each and every course!
We've been to Soif many times in the past and loved it but unfortunately we will not be coming back. There's a new chef coupled with a complete lack of sophistication on the wait staff and management that made this a terrible experience.
I asked to start with the bowl of olives, the server put that in front of me along with my husband's beet salad. The olives were plentiful, they just came out at the wrong time. The beet salad was hilarious. One beet cut up with literally 3 pieces of lettuce on goat cheese.
We were offered bread, then told, 'Oh, I forgot, we don't offer that anymore'. Would have been nice with the olives.
The main course was salmon, very small, nice quality on a bed of 2 bland 'mash' items. $34? The side of foam was flavorless. Worse, my husband has gnocchi which was reminiscent of a '60s vegetarian dish. A few pieces of strangely made pasta on a bed of carrots. "Horrible" was how he described it.
So, the olives and the wine were the winners. Could have stopped at Whole Foods for the same.
All the while, another server was hovering, joining in on our conversation, creepy.
We left hungry. The management made little attempt to correct the situation. I suspect that the new prices are an attempt to stay in business--we are all for that and don't flinch about spending a lot of money on meals. However, it's the Bay Area and there are very, very high standards here.
We enjoyed sampling different wines. The rib eye dinner was outstanding, wonderful flavorings. And the chocolate semifredo for dessert was delicious.
We went at last minute with out of town friends and we were pleased that the hostess worked hard to accomodate us. The wait staff were all attentive and personable. It's also a nice space, with a lively atmosphere. Our cocktails and wine were terrific. We noticed that menu had changed since we had last visited and that it was much more limited. Portions were relatively small and, while appealing in appearance, some of the flavor execution missed the mark. Having said this, we still had a good dining experience.
Great and creatively prepared and presented food, great service, gracious servers.
Friendly staff and excellent food. There's a wine shop that's part of the bar, to peruse for a nice bottle.
We sat at the chef's counter and left the meal completely in the hands of the chef. Our taste buds were treated to a pleasant evening. Loved every dish.
We love Soif and the food seems better with the new chef. That said, the portions were small and the prices higher, definitely a change and on the precious end for downtown Santa Cruz.
Also, the service was a bit chaotic and slow. We ordered specific drinks and were served something a bit different. The host and waiter seemed overwhelmed.
New chef has really upgraded both the food and service. Lovely new dishes and wonderful presentation of the food. Went two nights in a row to try different meals!
New chef seems really good - very hospitable and the menu is finally getting upgraded.
Always a pleasure
I took my girlfriend to dinner for our one-year anniversary. Everything was superb: the food was fabulous, the wine exquisite (she loved her Syrah flight), and it was amazing to get such personal attention from Chef Marshall. It's so great to find such excellent fine dining in Santa Cruz!
Pros: Food and service were good.
Cons: my champagne was flat and old, one of our entrees came out cold, and one other kitchen issue I can’t remember
We had amazing service and the food as always was excellent! Soif is one of the best restaurants in Santa Cruz!
Awesome food and service! I love Soif ❤️
