Thai
For years, owners Nat Ongsangkoon & Dia Khanthongthip have dreamed of bringing Thai market foods to DC, and are excited about the canvas Soi 38 presents. As natives of Bangkok, Thailand, they grew up relishing trips to the night market for some of the best food in Thailand, and are excited to bring this collection of street foods to Washington, DC.

Inspired by the underground eateries around Bangkok’s night markets, Soi 38 features creative Thai street foods, hearty Thai favorites and a bar program featuring draft and bottled cocktails to DC’s West End neighborhood.

The name Soi 38 is based on the iconic street food district and night market of the same name in Bangkok. As evening falls in Thailand, the Soi 38 night market transforms into a high energy, open-air food market crowded with stalls and rickety furniture where vendors dish out authentic Thai food favorites until the early-morning hours.

I bought a fish catch of day, rockfish. However, I thought $38 was for a skinny one was too much.

Happy hour was a very good deal (a bottle of wine for $25), but the calamari was overcooked. The food was okay, but not as good as I expected from such a celebrated restaurant. The restaurant itself was very comfortable and the service was very high quality. Would recommend as a good place to stop for happy hour, but maybe not a great place for dinner.

This was my first time dining at Soi 38 since their Michelin distinction, which was proudly advertised on the door. Unfortunately, the food was just alright, prices were steep (basic noodle entrees starting around $18) and the meal didn't compare to those at other Michelin guide restaurants in the city.

Pushy wait staff. Really mediocre food. It’s unbelievable they have any association with the Michelin Guide!

We visited Soi 38 twice during our visit to Washington DC. The first time was for lunch during a weekend. We were very surprise by the quality and flavor of our meals. We decided right then that we will have to return for dinner. We did, the next day. The food, again, was very good and the flavor was spot on. The menu is a bit difficult to read as they use Thai names for all their dishes - may be a bit difficult to pronounce. I am Thai and it took me a little while to figure things out as they do not have the menu in Thai. :)

Highly recommended.

The chicken satay meat (some pieces) were hard and dry .... The Shrimp and Chicken fried rice was good, although next time I will pick a higher spice level. Service was good and prompt.

It was meh. I asked my server for recommendations, and I got the roast pork belly appetizer and roast duck entree. These were unexceptional. I would have preferred if I had been steered toward items with more authentic Thai flavors. I wanted the mango sticky rice for dessert, but they were out, so I had green tea ice cream. It was fine store bought ice cream. As for service, my waitress seemed to treat me like an imposition rather than a customer. This would be an OK place for drinks after work, but won't be dining there again.

Excellent Thai food. We had the crispy duck special and pork belly special. Both were tasty. Sides of eggplants well prepared. Would definitely come back when in town again.

I’ve been to Soi 38, four times and all 3 was spectacular. It was this last time, I almost got sick due to how the shrimp was poorly prepared. The drinks they made for my friend was not made well and when asked to switch they brought another bad drink. We ended up paying for the drink and food. Don’t visit Soi 38 during the busy lunch hour, everything seems rushed but somehow still takes forever to get to you.

Excellent Thai street food + traditional Thai menu, lots of vegetarian options, pretty good drinks, friendly service, very chic decor, good (talkable) noise level for Saturday night.

Took my hubby there for Father’s Day and we all enjoyed it. Don’t bring the kids though. We brought our kids and we felt bad as they were a little noisy for the neighbors. Nice staff , food and location

The ambience is lovely but when full the restaurant is VERY loud. We had to speak up to hear one another clearly. The food is delicious. The grilled squid appetizer was very nicely flavored. It almost didn’t need the spicy sauce on the side. Tom Kha kai did not disappoint and neither did the chicken massaman. The slow-roasted pork belly was super tender and delicious.

Our favorite dish was the dry curry (ground pork). The satay chicken was also good.

The crispy duck was tasty but the breading could have been lighter. The chili shrimp was pretty good.

House cocktails were good and had a nice southeast Asian twist on the classics.

Friendly waitstaff and good service.

Food tasted good, but serving sizes of the same dish were quite variable. Some looked much bigger than others or had significantly more meat or vegetable. Pad See Ew could include a but more noodle.

Soi 38 was open on Sunday and that was a plus! The food is ok. It came too fast which led me to believe that everything was precooked. The food was ok but nothing special. The shrimp curry did have lots of shrimp in it and that was a plus.

Found this recommended on a site for gluten free diners for my wife; plenty of choice on the menu and all rated with a 1-3 chilli rating for spiciness

The restaurant was fairly busy which created a good atmosphere- food was good and was offered a range of beers and cocktails to accompany. Finally, and unusually, a choice of desserts where 80% were GF

Excellent food and service, not rushed at all. Was there for dinner so not so crowded - imagine it is busy at lunch near K St. Nice room relatively quiet. Had chicken, pork, and shrimp dishes. All excellent. Chicken satay appetizer was excellent also.

Just ok. The tamarind passion fruit margarita is a bit too sweet. And you definitely could put more effort into serving something to cut the heat on a spicy dish than a hunk of raw cabbage and raw green beans. C’mon, that’s a total cop out.

We recently took a trip to Thailand and for Mother’s Day we wanted to try Thai food. We found this place and decided to try it. It was the closest to authentic Thai food we have had here in DC. It was amazing and the service was great. We will Definitely come back here again! If you want to try really great Thai food without the cost of a flight....this is the place to go!
