Sofi Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
First time at Sofi and I will go back. Close proximity to the Auditorium Theatre. Excellent value for the restaurant week option. First course of octopus with pesto and potato cake was perfect. Second course branzino very good but too salty. Italian cheesecake with ricotta was delicious too. Definitely will try again.
This is a quiet Italian restaurant tucked away in Printer's Row. It's food is consistently good and the service excellent. The wait staff was attentive to our every need and offering each of us some side pasta to our specifications -- in my case some risotto with parmesan (which was outstanding!)
We have loved this restaurant but the taste of the food slipped. The red sauce on the side pasta was not the light, sweet, fine puree this time but a thicker tomato paste flavor/texture. Our friend who ordered the beef ribs said it was "just okay". Those who ordered the Italian vegetable soup said it had a large piece of bread in the center that soaked up all the broth! What happened? Everything else is wonderful, a quiet, lovely milieu where friends can talk and enjoy the conversation and leave with a glowing appreciation that this kind of restaurant still exists BUT THE FOOD HAS TO MEASURE UP!
Really quite wonderful..
My sister and I were there prior to going to a Bulls game.
Started with the fried eggplant with marinara sauce and the carpaccio with arugula and shave parmesan. Excellent.
Entrees were the rack of lamb with rosemary sauce and the veal chop with mushroom special. The rack of lamb was spectacular; the veal chop was good but chewy. The mushroom sauce with the veal was great.
A small side of bucatini with parmesan/ground pepper was also delish. Although we both agreed that the $8.00 charge for the side pasta was unexpected since the veal chop was $45.00. It should have come with a side of pasta.
Cannoli for dessert and they were wonderful.
We arrived to Sofi at 5:20pm (5:30pm reso) and we made the Bulls game just missing the tip-off. A perfectly timed dinner by the server.
We'll definitely be going again..!
First I preface this review by saying that I don't leave negative reviews. Instead I tend to speak to management if there is an issue. However, it is after speaking with management I am compelled to leave this review.
This is my second and last time to this restaurant. The food is average at best. However, the overall experience is not worth it...especially in a city that has so many outstanding restaurants. It was a bunch of little things that added up to a big negative.
For starters, we were a party of six and the waiter brought out 5 dishes and then said to my wife "what did you order?" He then said it would be out in a minute, but it took close to 10 min. Clearly he forgot to put in the order out he kitchen messed up the order, but instead of apologizing he just ignored it. Ok, they made a mistake...no big deal. But then when the bill came, there were several instances of nickel and diming silliness. One dish was $11 and they charged $12. The ice cream desert says one scoop $5 two scoops $8. But they charged $10. My daughter had a Diet Coke and asked for a refill and we got charged $3 for the refill. All silly stuff that you would not expect from a higher end restaurant. Then they added a 20% gratuity to the bill since we were a party of six...but they added the 20% to the entire bill including the tax and wine. When we spoke to the waiter about the errors on the bill he sent the manager over who got aggressive.
It is not worth patronizing a restaurant that serves mediocre food, is lacking in service, has a manager who does not know how to manage and clearly is more interested in overcharging $5-10 per bill. Seems like a short-sighted approach to customer service.
As I was about to press send on this review, I noticed that there were other reviewers who were equally disappointed in this establishment. My advice is to stay away from this place and go to any number of far superior restaurants in Chicago.
We were stuck in traffic and we still were seated right away at a delightful table! Plus, we were in a rush to the Nutcracker (Auditorium Theater which is right around the corner)! When we told our server he put a rush on our order and our delicious food came out fast. We had plenty of time to eat and plenty of time to get ourselves seated in time for the ballet! Would totally recommend and go again!
We had a great evening. The service was cheerful, accommodating, top notch. We had the lamb shank and boar stew pasta. Both satisfied our wishes exactly. For the appetizer I had the special zucchini blossom and requested a spicy tomato sauce which the waiter happily provided. This was our third visit and no doubt there will be more even though we live on the near north side.
we had a reservation for 515 on a Saturday. we were told upon arrival we had to get out by 615. one of our party order lobster tail which arrive 15 minutes after the other 4 entrees. we also had 2 bottles of wine. if they didn't have time for us they should not have accepted the reservation and confirmed it twice with me. they did buy us dessert and a round of drinks in the bar and limited us to 2 bar stools for our party. I will not be back.
At best the food was fair. I had pasta with a duck ragu which was almost tasteless and only a few shreds of duck. Others said there’s we’re OK. Service also not impressive. I asked for a lemon for my water and got 1 small piece. I order a cup of tea and for $5 got a minimal selection and a tiny cup. Had to ask for an additional pot of hot water which I did get. Water was not refilled unless we asked. Would never go back.
