Soby's Ratings and Reviews
First time here. Atmosphere was good, food was great and our server was so warm and attentive. The hostesses were just ok, not super friendly. I’m pretty sure they forgot that we had checked in for our reservation, as they sat quite a few parties of people who came in after us. It was a busy Friday night so we were willing to overlook this and glad we did... the rest of the night was great. The shrimp and grits was he best I’ve ever had! Will definitely be back!
Was very excited to try this restaurant as we were visiting Greenville from Chicago. We found the food to be mediocre at best.!The octopus in beans was beyond oily, the frog less were simply flavorless and let’s not even begin discussing the white, limp, undercooked and soggy bacon that was wrapped around the pork loin.
Now for the good: lovely space with a cool history and our wait staff was amazingly attentive and friendly!!
The food was very good. We both had the crab cake entree which came with delicious corn, green beans and mashed potatoes. The crab cakes were mostly crab and excellent. The mashed potatoes were very good but I guess I would have preferred if the crab cakes were not put on top of the potatoes. Just my preference but I don't like mashed potatoes sticking to my crab cakes. I have to say our server was a bit gruff and off-putting and that diminished the dining experience. He became more talkative when he brought the bill. I would recommend Soby's but I won't rave about it.
We made the reservation with a note that we were celebrating our recent nuptials and there was no regard or recognition of that while we were there. Not even a congratulations from the host or server. Disappointing because I would have expected better from a restaurant staff of this reputation.
The usual high level wait staff service was matched by a good wine by the glass selection, good salad and soup starters and well prepared entrée meat and vegetable main course meals. We had a relaxed meal, but one timed very well for a nearby theater performance after our dining.
Soby's is a consistent value overall. Pretty much a downtown Greenville landmark.
Portions are perfect for those over 50 with excellent quality steaks. If you eat like a professional athlete you may need two courses here. But it is fine dining that I would rate in the top 15 in Greenville.
We have been to Soby's several times but took a friend here before a show at the Peace Center. Our server was excellent in getting us food and wine choices.
We had the calamari and the pimento cheese as wonderful appetizers. The crab cakes were very good as an entree.
