SOBA Lounge Ratings and Reviews
Our dinner with friends was outstanding. We were celebrating my husbands birthday. The only down side is driving from Cranberry to East Liberty, but that really has nothing to do with the restaurant food, server and ambience. Albert, our server was great and also the hostess who showed us to our table. It made for a very memorable evening !!!
Always a great time going here. To our surprise the menu had changed slightly. There were some new food options and new signature cocktails. We try and make it here 2-3x a year and every time it's worth it. It's a little on the pricey side, but for an occasional outing, it's worth it.
We live near Boston but Soba is must for all visits back to Pittsburgh. The food has always been excellent with a large variety of offerings to satisfy most anyone. One of our group has complicated food sensitivities and the waiter patiently and expertly negotiated a fine dinner for her.
We had been going to Soba for years for special occasions as one of our favorites in Big Burrito Group. We enjoy all the Big Burrito group restaurants & part of their email list. This time we were very disapppointed. We had the chicken spring rolls which were extremely overdone & dry. We also tried a recommended dish that was a bowl of rice with beef chunks, kimchi, & veggies. The bowl was mostly rice. The beef tenderloin was good with a nice crisp edge but there was very little meat or vegetables. It was mostly rice. No specials were offered by waitress.
Probably my favorite restaurant in Pittsburgh. Had friends visiting from DC and they were enthralled with the food, atmosphere and service. We shared many small plates and everything was outstanding -- especially loved the spicy tuna roll and calamari. For dessert, highly recommend the homemade ice cream/sorbet, creme brulee and chocolate maki!
I’ve been here dozens of times but the last two times the food was just off. If I’m spending $85 for two people (no alcohol) I expect better quality control. The calamari was soggy. I ordered pad Thai which comes with chicken, shrimp, and tofu. I can’t have the chicken so I just get shrimp and tofu. I had TWO pieces of tofu and 3 shrimp. That’s it. What would I have gotten if there was chicken? Less than that?
Soba has always had a reputation for excellent and very tasty food. It is wonderful that this continues so well. The corn chowder was outstanding. Both the black code and the ahi dishes were terrific!
This has been our go to restaurant for special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, etc. and this was for a birthday. Usually, they provide a dessert to go along with it but not this time. I don't know if the policy has changed or the waiter just forgot. But, which ever it was, it did not diminish the wonderful plates from the kitchen.
Soba is a wonderful place to dine.
Had family in from out of town, so thought this would be a good choice. We had a few drinks at the bar first, and then had dinner - both were lovely. I'd also like to give them extra points for accommodating us on the first floor; I'm on crutches right now and upper-floor seating would have been difficult. One note: everything I've had at Soba has been delicious, but my family members were not huge fans of the Pad Thai. (Said it was OK, but not rave-reviews.) While I'm sure it's fine, honestly, I'd go with something a little more unique if you go, anyway - their menu is creative and interesting, so give a new option a try. You won't be disappointed. Also, service is always outstanding without being intrusive - big thumbs on that as well.
I’ve been going to Soba for years since it opened and the food is still outstanding and the service is top notch with servers who have great knowledge of the food and beverages. I have never had a less than perfect meal and the staff are always kind, personable and professional.
First timers, we loved their specialty cocktail menu as well as a very diverse menu. Apologize if I forgot but her name (I think Missy) but she was perfect, great recommendations, service and attitude.
Will go back for sure to try some other entrees. We took our Missy's recommendation and went out on a limb for the Duck and it was fantastic.
Great spot to get together with friends. Easy to talk (not overly noisy) and catch up, but still moderately busy too on a Saturday night. The waitstaff was helpful and friendly and did not push the pace which was perfect. The food was really excellent as well as the wine. Third time here and never disappointed.
Very disappointing, especially given the ratings. 3 of us for birthday dinner. Nice table on their deck upstairs. Ordered 2 glasses of wine plus a beer. They brought the wine and the beer but no glass for the beer. When we ordered more wine/beer, I specified that the beer come with a glass. Ordered the fried tofu. Almost inedible. When we mentioned this to the waiter he sent over the GM. He said that a lot of people had recently complained, but that they didn't know how each diner would react until they tasted it. There were 30+ pieces, so if the chef or one of his assistants wanted to be sure about the quality it would have been very easy for them to take one piece and try it. The restaurant did take it off the bill. The pork appetizer was served in lettuce leaves that were meant to serve as wrappers for the ground pork. The lettuce was torn into bite size pieces, virtually impossible to use as a wrapper, unless we were going to use tweezers to put the filling onto the lettuce. The accompanying herbs were not fresh, they were dried. We have never eaten that dish (or its equivalent) absent fresh herbs such as cilantro.
We were so disappointed in the quality of the appetizers that we did not order any main courses, we did order the two satays, the beef was significantly undercooked, the fish had a sweet sauce that didn't pair well with the fish. At this point the waiter came back and asked if we had decided on our main courses, but we didn't feel that we wanted to order any additional food given the level of disappointment we felt from the appetizers, the service, etc.
It is a very attractive restaurant, has an interesting menu - but the quality of the food and service is not up to what the ratings indicated.
I have been to Soba a number of times, so nothing new written here. We went for a Korean 4-course tasting menu. Excellent overall. We loved the first course especially. Alcohol pairings also excellent, esp for the main course. There was a last minute substitution of a riesling that didnt work so well as what the menu said it was supplying.
Service was a B+: we had to ask for several things that should have been done automatically for $150 dinner for two people.
But still great evening.
First time there. Celebrating birthdays with tasting menu to try variety with wine pairings.
Everything was delicious, good mix/variety. The lights were set very low during first course could barely see... but someone must've asked bc they turned them up then much better-still low enough for ambience but could see.
We have eaten here a few times, few years ago. The rock shrimp app was not what I remember....it was mainly now a plate of fried dough with shrimp. I remember raving about it before. The sea bass app was divine though. The spicy tuna roll was not great--avocado was hard as a rock-literally a big hard chunk in your mouth. So odd.
I really wanted to give it 5 starts for food but can't with that.
Service was fabulous.
Return visit. Special occasion with family. Food was awesome.....outstanding flavors for every dish we ordered; apps and entrées. Pad thai was incredible, as were the other dishes our family ordered. Service was exceptional. Cannot wait to return. Super value. A place not to miss if in Pittsburgh.
We had the sushi and dumplings as appetizers and both were amazing! I would also highly recommend the chocolate "sushi" for dessert, which was basically chocolate mousse with a chocolate coating on it - excellent! The service definitely left something to be desired. It was not a very busy night, but it took a while for our waitress to return/fill waters/things of that nature. However, I would still recommend this restaurant for the quality of food and atmosphere (quiet, somewhat dark, relaxed).
We have found that SOBA is a family favorite for celebrating birthdays. With vegans and non-meat eaters in the family, we find the restaurant to be very accommodating with many menu items perfect for all. Always delicious with great service. We found the music to be too loud but when asked if the sound could be lowered, it was immediately turned down. Thank you!
Hadn't been to Soba in years! Now I cannot wait to go back! Was delighted with the food and service. Our calamari and our fried dumpling appetizers were delicious as was my filet mignon served over spicy mashed potatoes.
Our server was pleasant and appreciatively unpretentious.
A lovely evening.
