$30 and under
Scandinavian
Smörgås Chef Restaurant serves up super fresh seafood and prime meats based on centuries of Scandinavian & European culinary traditions. Zagat Survey says Smörgås Chef is "a refreshing change of pace", and Village Voice claims the food is "Damn Good."

Smörgås Chef's authentic Swedish Meatballs with Lingonberries have become famous. The New York Post calls Smörgås Chef the "Swedish Meatball Mecca" of New York. Smörgås Chef has also become known for its roasted rack of lamb with a goat cheese Sherry sauce, and its oven-baked Cod from the Kenai Peninsula.

For lunch, you will find a smorgasbord of open-face Scandinavian sandwiches like Coldwater Shrimp, Smoked Salmon with Egg & Chives, and Chicken Caramel with Norwegian goat cheese and asparagus. For weekend brunch, enjoy Scandinavian Baked Eggs with a chanterelle hollandaise, Eggs Benedict, Burgers, and Vanilla Waffles. The New York Times calls Smörgås Chef "a little treasure."

I was hoping for more. The food was okay, not great- except the gravlax which was outstanding. They charge for second cups of coffee and the service was bordering on hostile.

A great location among many downtown on Stone Street. There were many new and interesting choices on the menu so three out of four chose the smorgasbord assortment. After trying each of the items, we still couldn't decide which we liked the best. Everything was fresh, tasty and very nicely presented.

I end up always getting the same thing at smorgas because i like it so much (kale and apple salad with gravlax). the vibe is chill, its not so loud you can't talk, and is a real place to have a civilized lunch at a reasonable price in the financial district - a rarity!

The 72 hour Aquavit cured gravlaks was absolutely unreal. And the herring trio was everything I wanted it to be and more!!!!!!!The food (including the side salads (potato and cucumber)) were not over-seasoned, so the ingredients were allowed to speak for themselves. I can't wait to come back

I took my husband here for Father's Day,and the food was excellent. The mixed green salad was fresh and the portion was pretty big and tasty. He ordered the grilled Alaskan Salmon which he said tasted fresh and delicious; I ordered the duck with mushrooms and Marsala sauce with mashed potatoes, absoludly delicious. I would go here again although the place it's a little small and hard to find but the food it's so worth it!

We've been to Smorgas Chef twice now and have enjoyed it both times. The Swedish meatballs do not disappoint, and the cozy two-person table at the window, while quite small in space, offers a great place to people watch.

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday lunch because it's right down the street from my work and we had a Diner's Deck card for $10 off food. He had the crispy chicken sandwich and I had the salmon burger. Both were pretty good. The Atlantic salmon entree, which is also served at Crepes du Nord, the creperie at the other end of the Smorgas Chef restaurant, is amazing and I highly recommend it. During the late spring/summer, there is lots of outdoor seating on Stone Street.

Wait staff turns over every 2-3 months, and thus lacks consistency. To resolve that they need to train their staff better. Most new staff have no idea how to interact with customers, like asking how is your food, can I get you anything else, or following up on simple requests like an extra napkin. Most are not that busy but still seem to lack focus and concentration with dealing with simply requests or being mindful.

The main attraction is the high-quality seasonal Swedish food, some of which is sourced from the owners' upstate New York farm. Over the years, we've had brunch, lunch and dinner both inside the small but well-designed restaurant and, in good weather, outside on Stone Street. Food is consistently high-quality and reasonably priced; service always friendly. Great neighborhood vibe in the Financial District.

I had the Smorgasbord, which is a mix of all traditional Swedish food on one plate. I enjoyed it but it was a bit pricey for what it was. I also ordered an espresso martini and it was mixed with Bailey's (wrong) and overpriced. Drinks should be avoided there. Not sure if I'd go again, there are other places to go for Swedish food that must be cheaper.

The salmon burger is most delicious. The menu is not elaborate but lots of good choices that makes it difficult to decide. Not a big place so it fills up quickly in the lunch hour. Definitely recommended if you want to try the Norwegian cuisine.
