Located on the first floor of the Biltmore in Los Angeles, Smeraldi's offers a great place to dine if headed out to Pershing Square are in DTLA afterwards, or if gathering anywhere downtown. The food is all authentically Italian with a "Los ANgeleno twist". I highly recommend the BUratta to start and I ordered the Filet Mignon, which was presented on a bed of Fingerling potatoes. The flavor was very good and the meat was extremely tender. I give this establishment my best of recommendations for anything ordered off the menu.
They changed the menu. Not as good as before. Prawn sandwich only had a handful of prawns. Ceasar salad with grilled chicken good. Generous pieces of chicken and dressing tasty. It was only 3/4 full of people yet was very noisy. All hardscape; nothing to absorb the noise.
This is in the Biltmore Hotel. It is always decorated beautifully for Christmas. We come every year at Christmas to enjoy the decor.
Horrible service. Worked very hard to get waited on. Asked to taste a red wine they had. They brought a full glass of white wine. I told them it is not what I asked for, server insisted I try. I tried and said thank you but I would still prefer to try the red. He comes back and says bartender will not allow me to have anymore tastings. WTH? I didn't have any tastings I asked for to begin with. Food was okay. Not a restaurant I will go to again.
For such a high-end Hotel I was quite disappointed at the only available restaurant that night. At first I thought everything was going to be taught Notch but I must say our waiter was professional however when I order the cheese platter he did not know the names of the cheese is right off the bat and was very attentive but he should know what types of cheeses is on the variety platter.. while we were waiting for our food a couple set two tables near us upon sitting down all I know is the restaurant manager, the chef, another manager all showed up and were very chit-chatting for about 40 minutes they were awfully loud and I became very agitated I could not hear myself speak nor could I and joy my company that was with me. Even the guy across another table turned and rolled his eyes at how unprofessional the management and Chef were towards the rest of the guests. So my husband went up to the host and asked to have us be seated at another table instead she went over and asked the management to break it up which eventually they did and were very apologetic but I was already upset that I even had to complain about it. So then when my chicken pizza arrived I was looking forward to eating my food since I was so hungry the chicken was awfully dry as they over-cooked it on the pizza. So after one small slice I decided to take it to go. Had I known this I probably would have went elsewhere to eat breakfast the next day was better but it wasn't all that they made it sound like it was I've had better. And for $40 per person, the pastries were not fresh they were awfully dry as if they had served them the day prior. Sorry I wish I had a better review to ride but I don't
We made a reservation and went here before The Labyrinth Masquerade which was at the Millenium Biltmore where the restaurant is located. Shared a pizza, a bowl of excellent mushroom soup and a salad between two of us. Everything was very tasty, the service was fast, and the atmosphere nice. A perfect dinner before our event.
Had the unfortunate experience of dining here again on Monday 7/24. Came here quite a bit years ago when the food was high quality and they had respect for what they served their customers. Out of options on where to eat downtown we decided to give this place another try. They had the Mediterranean buffet for lunch. The food was literally disgusting. Old, smelly seafood. Everything looked like it was weeks old and tasted like it as well. I know all the waiters here from years ago and the service is acceptable. The food on the other hand was absolutely awful. The 4 of us all agreed to never step foot in this place EVER again. When we were leaving we let the manager know in no uncertain terms how awful our lunch was. He asked us to expand and give him some examples of what we didn't like. I went through the laundry list point by point. His answer was I'll let the chef know, we are planning a complete overhaul in a few months anyway. Some advice here, don't let the chef know, FIRE THE CHEF. We actually had to pay for this dog food. What a terrible experience, today we are all feeling sick...
Our department chooses one restaurant during dineLA to have a group lunch. This time it was Smeraldi's.
Not only was the dineLA menu excellent - all raves no issues - but we found out that they have a great lunch buffet with a freshly prepared pasta bar.
Now this is not something for everyday lunch but is definitely for the splurge or a group lunch. We will surely be returning to try the lunch buffet.
Very disappointing - the Open Table description needs to be changed immediately - totally misleading. Not offered a seat in main dining room, not offered a wine list, antipasti platter served with missing ingredients. Spoke to the manager who offered us a complementary dessert after we had paid and were leaving. No way is this an authentic Italian dining establishment.
Beautiful Valentine's Day 6 course dinner at Smeraldi's! Stunning lighting, exquisite menu, professional waitstaff, and romantic atmosphere. I could not have asked for a better way to spend Valentine's Day. The preselected menu offered favor filled options that impressed us at each course. Perfect evening.
We enjoyed a lovely lunch with a very attentive and friendly staff. The buffet lunch at $20 is a real bargain and is lovely. It includes a lovely salad bar (with shrimp, calamari and crab), soup selections, and a pasta bar where you can choose a wide variety of ingredients. There is also a dessert bar. As if this isn't enough (and not that you need it), for a mere $5 more yo can add an entree of fish, chicken or beef with side dishes as well. Quite a bargain and delicious but come hungry. And a special shout out to the Biltmore hotel for their hospitality in allowing women at the women's march to use their rest rooms. You are our hero.
So this was during dine LA and even though they participate in the dining experience, i still believe the lunch buffet which is open from 10am to 2pm, is better than the dine LA menu. They validate the parking at $8 for coming and eating at the restaurant. I have to say that the food is really good and not bad for the price if it weren't for the parking. Then it becomes a little more. The buffet comes with a salad bar and a seafood sald bar that comes with crab claws, shrimp cocktails, clams, mussels, and squid and a few more items. They have a nice dessert bar and a pasta station that you can design your own pasta and choose your own ingredients. There is also soup and bread available as well. Very nice lunch experience. Would come again.
We were very disappointed. We stayed overnight in the hotel and had a reservation for breakfast and showed up on time only to find a line with only one person handling the line. In fairness there was a WOMEN'S MARCH and they must not have heard about it because they did not have appropriate staffing. When I went to head of line to say we had reservations I was told to get in the line. When 15 min went by and we finally got to the front of the line the man said we should have said we had reservations. It was not a good experience. I was surprised that they did NOT have any non-dairy coffee creamer so I could not have coffee. We did not want the buffet brunch much to the disappointment of the server who was busy and let us know this. I thought their hospitality was lacking in every way. No thanks.
Love visiting the Biltmore but was disappointing visit on Thanksgiving as there was no holiday buffet, only a prefix menu with choices not to my liking. Very odd dishes. Not holiday traditional and not Italian. Did not like. Needed much for the wanting. Fiancé didn't like that we had to sit by windows up front near hostess stand (where we could spot several homeless and off druggies wandering and begging 5 feet away from hotel and the seedy city park out front.) It's more cafeteria style up front in the restaurant and we don't like it. We usually love the music and ambiance and busy talking and joy of the lower back room with all the cozy booths. It's old school back there. They decided to block out that whole area and close it for the night! Have been to many of their grand holiday buffets or Sunday brunches. That is the time to go.
We had been going there for 5 years. this year Thanksgiving day, we went there looking forward to great meal and attentive service but I was very disappointed with the food. The food was not that good. No one picked up the plates and glasses after we finished with them. We had to tell the manager about that.
Just a little disappointed in the wine list selection considering this located in the Biltmore hotel. Also, the overall quality of the food was not very authentic. Carpaccio was cut too thick, all pizzas (even the seafood pizza) come with red sauce thought that is not stated on the menu. The portions were very large and the staff was very nice, but I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to a friend.
Although Smiraldi's is our go to spot when we have our Administrative Professional's Day luncheon, each time has had some disappointments. We learned today that they have a new owner and chef and it raised somewhat of a red flag. This normally means that you may not find what you loved before, and in this case it was true. But funny, I seemed to remember the same report that there was a new chef about a year ago... Oh well, they did not have the lobster ravioli once again, a true disappointment, so two of us opted to order from the menu. 3 of our group had the buffy. There were "meh" moments with the buffet that used to be so great. They now place the shrimp and crab claws (only crab claws) in individual glasses. This must be to cut down on waste ...ok... I'm all for not being wasteful...but the food quality has suffered I think a bit as well. I would most likely come back but will probably opt first for a new hipper restaurant in the future.
Wait staff seemed very uncoordinated. Either long waits between courses or no wait - sorbet came then immediately the main course appeared. The tenderloin and sea bass sat on the serving tray. The waiter didn't reappear to serve us for minutes. By then the potatoes were warm/cold. We did not receive any bread or rolls. Our check came instantly after course 6 with the coffee. We did not receive the last course - petit fours - and had to ask for them. They were caramels wrapped in plastic -- not a typical petit four. Overall the dining experience was not worth nearly $200. We did speak to a manager and received a small discount on our bill. That was appreciated, but when you have high expectations for a once in a lifetime experience and it doesn't even come close to meeting your dreams, then it is a huge disappointment.
We had prix fixe dinner here on Christmas Day. The vegetables were stone cold (like they had just come out of the refrigerator), the potato puree was lukewarm, and the New York strip steak was tough, although it was cooked correctly and was tasty. On a prix fixe menu, with the kitchen having to deal with a limited number of dishes, the plating should have been perfect.
Service was amazingly slow -- one hour from sitting down to getting our entrees.
I don't know why hotels think of their restaurants as just conveniences for their guests rather than profit centers that would attract diners from outside the hotels.
Experience here was more for the family to gather and spend some quality time with some great food. We've seen better brunch buffets with better prices, but the staff definitely made the experience absolutely fantastic. The breakfast bar was average so, so nothing really outstanding. The seafood/salad bar was better. The hot meal lunch bar was the best with select meats like corn feed beef and pecking duck cooked to perfection. The ham was noteworthy as well. The desserts were absolutely divine - I would expect nothing less. But the real stars of the brunch was the staff. Absolutely courteous, kind, friendly with all smiles grinning ear to ear making a wonderful Christmas family experience. I loved them so much, I wanted to hire them all to take home with us. They were 100% professionals, but didn't act like scrooges - nothing but all heart and sincerity. I'd go back to Smeraldi's just to be served by the fine staff.
We were looking for a place to take a friend and stumbled across Smiraldi's. Since it was in the Millennium Biltmore, we figured it had to be decent. It was more than decent with very well done food at reasonable prices in a very pleasant ambiance. Server was attentive, and there's a full bar if that's of interest. Desserts were pretty good as well.
Hoping to eat at a very nice restaurant prior to the opera theatre, this was a great disappointment. The photos on the website showed white tablecloths and a very nice ambiance. There were no table cloths and no ambiance. It was more like a cafe. White lighting, rickety wooden chairs with plastic seats, etc. The food was okay, but not for that price. Way overpriced. The roasted chicken was a small piece of chicken dumped on top of yellow mashed potatoes from too much butter. The cheesecake dessert was mass produced. The whipped cream dollop on top, when putting my fork in it, lifted off the dried out cheesecake in one whole piece. I'll know next time!!
We were there early after they opened so it was not crowded. The French dip sandwich is very tasty, and we liked the Kobe burger, too. They have a Chardonnay that is excellent, smooth and buttery. Our waiter was Tee and he is pleasant to have around. Give it a try.
Seafood buffet was a big hit with our group. The shrimp cocktail and lobster tails were fresh and well-liked. Perhaps most people get the buffet, becuase those in our group that ordered off the menu were waiting quite awhile for their food, any drink refills, and no one was at the front to greet us when we entered the restaurant (we actually thought it was closed).
