Small Plates was the first restaurant of its kind in the United States and still possesses the federal trademark to our name and concept. It looked nice inside, but this place sucks. I'm not even picky at all so it says a lot when I complain. The waitress handed me a split size bottle of wine- didn't bother opening it. Which I really didn't care about until my date kept saying how ridiculous it was. The pizza dough was raw and doughy, not fully cooked...I honestly couldn't even eat it. It was also dead on a friday night. There was a cute waiter though, but sorry won't be back!

Had a group of 5 ordered 10-12 plates for group everything was very good. Fish tacos were awesome. Only negative it was very warm in there maybe something was wrong with ac.

The restaurant was busy, not enough wait staff. Orders were forgotten, It took us asking 3 people for water and plates to finally receive them, when the water did come, the waiter just filled our empty pop glasses. The food was poor. The fried tomatoes were bland, the poke bowl was rice with some tuna and about 3 ounces of soya sauce, and The mac and cheese was taste less . We remember it being a much better restaurant. The waiter tried to make up for, all the problems,but he fell short.

We made reservations after looking on line for gluten free options. We were very disappointed that the waitress wasn't very knowledgeable about what was gluten free and didn't seem to take it very seriously. Probably won't go back. The meals we got were good and the overall selection was nice.

I wanted to celebrate my sisters birthday. I told them it was her birthday and even called in advanced. We didn't get to the desert. It took an hour to get our food. We asked for well done lamb chops and the they served them rare. I was disappointed with the chicken and waffles. The chicken was bland and the waffles were bricks. The only thing that made our night were the sweet potato fries. They were good.

Small Plates is apparently one of Detroits old favourites - but we had not heard of it. But it is worth popping in for some amazing small plates! Great beer and wine too.

When you stop and think about it, Small Plates has been downtown for a long time, back when that area was not as comfortable to hang around. The fact that it still thrives says quite a bit. Half the fun is negotiating which of the many choices the table will end up with. Even with two of us, there was discussion narrowing the many choices down to the five we ended up with. Our favorite was the duck lettuce wraps, but the chicken and waffles, ribs, and tuna poke were all quite good. I was a bit disappointed with the lamb chops, which is supposed to be a staple per my understanding. Overall a very good experience.

This was my first time at this venue and the menu was wonderful. Our server was very accommodating especially when we informed her that one of our appetizers was over cooked. She was attentive to all of her customers and being a food connoisseur I was impressed with overall evening at this venue. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone that can appreciate good healthy food menu.

The food was good, slightly overpriced. I was a bit disappointed with our server though. She barely checked up on us and didn't even realize that one of our dishes never came out until she brought the bill and we told her.

We had tickets to a show at the Fox Theater and wanted somewhere within walking distance. We love tapas and so it was a no-brainer! The food was fantastic and our server, Brandon was wonderful! We will definitely go back!

Hostess(es) can be rather rude (including via phone), but the food is worthwhile. Don't ask for any accommodations or arrive more than a few minutes late for a reservation or you'll experience the big chill.

This was my 3rd time eating at Small Plates. I have enjoyed every time. I do think they are a little on the pricey side, but every time I've dined there, I've walked out thinking it was worth it. My favorite is the lotus flower - it's really a taste explosion. So good. Pan Asian salad, duck lettuce wraps, and the pizza with the duck confit are also amazing. The only dish that I've ever been disappointed with was the kale salad. It was on the bitter side. I cook with kale a lot and make a kale salad at home that we really like. Nice ambiance at Small Plates. I've had a different server each time, and each server have had good wine recommendations. Highly recommend this restaurant!

We had a reservation but arrived about 20 minutes early and they sat us immediately. The White Sangria, Beef Sliders, Mac & Cheese, and Mediterranean Pizza were all delicious! Our server was amazing; she was very upbeat and knowledgeable about the menu and making appropriate recommendations based on our likes without being pushy for us to buy all the things. 🙂 The only downfall was the size of our table. There were only two of us with a combination of three food items and two drinks and we had to stack the food plates to fit everything on the small table. It was our first time and we would definitely go again when we're in town!

A friend and I had reservations at 10:45 after seeing a performance at the Opera House. The hostess was rather short with me. Or secure was friendlier, but a bit scatter-brained as he brought us our app and salads, but completely forgot the entree we ordered to share. It was late, though. They were probably all exhausted. The menu looked interesting and the wine list was decent.

Great food as always. Great scene. The service was friendly but poor, and some of the backup seemed to be caused by the bar. Drinks were requested multiple times before they arrived, not good for a place which prominently features its bar. The server did not follow up on our drink orders, and one of us asked for ice water half a dozen times before it arrived. The server also got our order wrong several times. Small Plates serves small, shareable items, often with two or three pieces on a plate. We were four and thus ordered two of multiple dishes, but often got only one. Even with these annoyances, however, we had fun, enjoyed good food, and will probably return.

Went with party of 4 before Opera. It's alright but does not live up to it's reputation. Couldn't get window seat because they "were reserved" but nobody showed up until we were leaving. Get impression they were doing us a favor eating there. Silverware casually thrown on table after we sat down. Not terrible, just not a special experience. If Detroit is to be "world class" city, we need to knock customer service up couple of notches and improve our attitudes. Will not bring guest there again. Embarrassing.

Very enjoyable. Wait staff was attentive. Food was very good. Sweet potatoes w/honey were addictive. Sandwich type items should have three pieces, i.e. sliders, fish tacos. With in walking distance from sports activities. Would go again.

First time at Small Plates & enjoyed the overall experience. Waiter Paul, was attentive & answered questions about the menu well. Enjoyed portobello sliders, scallops, sweet potato fries, tuna poke, mac & 4 cheese, bread pudding. Pleasantly surprised with cheese plate which was tasty. Would not order fried green tomatoes again...too greasy. Prices a bit high on some items, considering small sizes.

Our first visit to Small Plates was about 6 years ago and we were not impressed, but decided to give it another try. I'm glad we did! The food was served fast and was very tasty! My husband and I split the beet salad, duck lettuce wraps, fish tacos, sliders and sweet potato fries. All were excellent. We topped off our meal with a shared banana bread pudding that was to die for! The menu items are a tad overpriced, but not unreasonable. Also, the restaurant is a very short walk to Comerica Park/Ford Field. A good place for a light dinner/lunch pre/post game.

Tried new deserts. Strawberry tart and banana bread pudding. Both tasted great and looked adorable. I'm not at all a fan of bread pudding but this was so much better than anything I've ever tried.
