This has become one of our favorite restaurants in all California. Reliably extremely great food, combined with warm, friendly staff and a comfortable atmosphere. Whether just the two of us or our extended family, when we want an excellent meal, we’ll drive the 35 miles up the coast to Sly’s.
Always a “Superb” dining experience. We have been guests at Sly’s for over 5 years. Fantastic friendly attentive service, consistently well prepared food. The only wish I have is the wine by glass be a taller pour, otherwise 5 stars all the way. Highly recommend.
Generally speaking, we like the place, and have been there a number of times. Our less than stellar experience this time was the result of choices. The chicken pot pie was underwhelming and fairly tasteless, while the Osso Buco was quite beautifully prepared, but very skimpy, at $37.
An old friend was visiting from New England, and it happened to be her birthday .. we took her to Sly's to celebrate the visit, her special day, and Carpinteria. It was a perfect evening. She loved the abalone appetizers and the Sand Dabs... we thought the service was especially attentive and the food, as always, was exceptional. We love Sly's for any and all occasions .
..AND, we can walk to it!!
My date and I were on our way back to Ventura county following a weekend in Santa Barbara and stopped at Sly's for brunch. The atmosphere in the front room is great. It looks like a real diner, but with a fabulous, real bar and a roll-up door in the front to let in the ocean air.
Do you know how contemporary bars organize the bottles to be in patterns? They'll put Grey Goose on each end of the top row and work their way inward with duplicate bottles? Not so at Sly's. It looks like the bar tender actually makes drinks versus spending time decorating. This was a really refreshing detail.
The ladies serving were efficient, friendly and polite, and just the right amount of attentive.
I will definitely return.
We have been going to Sly's since the day it opened! We love having a martini and an old fashion here. Great place to linger and have a chat with my husband! Personal are wonderful. We especially like the way the staff is treated...like family!
Good food, good drinks, good people!
I have had many meals here, and maybe it was an off night, but our two dishes were almost bad enough to send back. Instead, we will vote by not returning. My date's boullabaisse was very over cooked, tough mussels, shrimp, overdone fish, all but unedible. I had Julia Child's beef bougougnon, but no pearl onions, and dried mushrooms, but still good flavor.
I've never had a bad dish at Sly's. Everything is superb -- fresh, perfectly prepared, and wonderfully presented. The biggest problem is that there are too many great-tasting things on the menu ... I can't possibly eat everything I want at any one visit (believe me, I've tried). It doesn't get any better than this.
Sly's is consistently good and not at all pretentious.
It is a great place to hang out with friends for a casual meal and beverages. One never feels rushed.
The food is fresh and the menu varied but not too much. Salads are really good, as are the fish and meat dishes.
We try to eat here at least once a month.
This was the worst expensive meal I have ever had in my life. I wasn't expecting the Michelin 3 star treatment, but every component of our meal was far from edible. From the kids freezer burned hot dog meal that took 35 minutes to be served, the old fashioned that tasted like bitters, the chewy lobster, the kerosene flavored artichokes, the wilted wedge, the butter drenched green beans and the rubbery cod. I have never wanted to forget about spending $400 as badly as after this meal.
DO NOT GO HERE!
