Sly's Ratings and Reviews
Always a “Superb” dining experience. We have been guests at Sly’s for over 5 years. Fantastic friendly attentive service, consistently well prepared food. The only wish I have is the wine by glass be a taller pour, otherwise 5 stars all the way. Highly recommend.
Generally speaking, we like the place, and have been there a number of times. Our less than stellar experience this time was the result of choices. The chicken pot pie was underwhelming and fairly tasteless, while the Osso Buco was quite beautifully prepared, but very skimpy, at $37.
An old friend was visiting from New England, and it happened to be her birthday .. we took her to Sly's to celebrate the visit, her special day, and Carpinteria. It was a perfect evening. She loved the abalone appetizers and the Sand Dabs... we thought the service was especially attentive and the food, as always, was exceptional. We love Sly's for any and all occasions .
..AND, we can walk to it!!
My date and I were on our way back to Ventura county following a weekend in Santa Barbara and stopped at Sly's for brunch. The atmosphere in the front room is great. It looks like a real diner, but with a fabulous, real bar and a roll-up door in the front to let in the ocean air.
Do you know how contemporary bars organize the bottles to be in patterns? They'll put Grey Goose on each end of the top row and work their way inward with duplicate bottles? Not so at Sly's. It looks like the bar tender actually makes drinks versus spending time decorating. This was a really refreshing detail.
The ladies serving were efficient, friendly and polite, and just the right amount of attentive.
I will definitely return.
We have been going to Sly's since the day it opened! We love having a martini and an old fashion here. Great place to linger and have a chat with my husband! Personal are wonderful. We especially like the way the staff is treated...like family!
Good food, good drinks, good people!
I have had many meals here, and maybe it was an off night, but our two dishes were almost bad enough to send back. Instead, we will vote by not returning. My date's boullabaisse was very over cooked, tough mussels, shrimp, overdone fish, all but unedible. I had Julia Child's beef bougougnon, but no pearl onions, and dried mushrooms, but still good flavor.
I've never had a bad dish at Sly's. Everything is superb -- fresh, perfectly prepared, and wonderfully presented. The biggest problem is that there are too many great-tasting things on the menu ... I can't possibly eat everything I want at any one visit (believe me, I've tried). It doesn't get any better than this.
Sly's is consistently good and not at all pretentious.
It is a great place to hang out with friends for a casual meal and beverages. One never feels rushed.
The food is fresh and the menu varied but not too much. Salads are really good, as are the fish and meat dishes.
We try to eat here at least once a month.
This was the worst expensive meal I have ever had in my life. I wasn't expecting the Michelin 3 star treatment, but every component of our meal was far from edible. From the kids freezer burned hot dog meal that took 35 minutes to be served, the old fashioned that tasted like bitters, the chewy lobster, the kerosene flavored artichokes, the wilted wedge, the butter drenched green beans and the rubbery cod. I have never wanted to forget about spending $400 as badly as after this meal.
DO NOT GO HERE!
My husband and I celebrated our Wedding Anniversary while vacationing in Carp. We chose Sly's thinking it would be a great romantic date. It seemed to be the only local "posh" place to dine for a special occasion. Unfortunately, the restarurant is very loud. We couldn't even carry on a conversation. If you're into drinking with friends and don't care about the ambiance, this is probably an ok place. The food was mediocre at best for the price. My husband's Salmon was mushy and without much flavor. The shrimp scampi was bland. The bread is delicious, but so crusty and hard, it is impossible to eat it neatly(or even chew at times). My sirloin was tender, but, again, low on flavor. The sweet potato home fries were barely warm and not at all crispy. However, my warm spinach salad was very satisfying and the service was above average.
If we were paying half the price, we might have left satisfied. Overall, I'd recommend this place for drinks and apps with friends, but not much else.
Disappointing overall. Boullibaise boring. Lamb overpriced and unpleasantly gamey which they didn't seem to care about. Split a wedge salad into ridiculously small halves like iceberg lettuce was costly. Bloody Mary very good. Onion rings crispy goodness. Coconut cake excellent. Sauces and dressings good. Wouldn't go back though.
Wife and I don't get date night often, Thursday after Tuesday Ind Day Holiday, and was perfect; got there 45 min before 830 res, we sat at bar and were inly ones at bar, rest was 50% fulk, quiet but not empty! We had first dinner out together in months, thanks Sly's!!
Food was good and service very friendly. Prices per dish don't seem to be that high, except after the food arrives; portions are quite small, and thus one would need to order quite a number of courses in order to finish a meal and feel full. Thus, I wouldn't recommend it as a value for money restaurant, but a good meal nonetheless.
My girlfriend ordered a Tom Collins and I ordered a glass of wine, both were great. We ordered shrimp scampi, grilled artichokes for appetizers and she had the sand dabs and I had the salmon for dinner- all was delicious. Atmosphere was lively but not overbearing. It was a busy Saturday night and I would recommend reservations. The long bar looked like a fun place to hang out with a friend or date, maybe next time... I loved the valet service...my car was waiting for us as we walked out!
Sly's continues to deliver expertly prepared seafood and flavorful sides. We had sand dabs, abalone, and salmon with several excellent vegetable side dishes. The cauliflower is especially tasty.
The menu is incredibly diverse with a daily comfort food special.
A packed local place -- you'll need a reservation most nights.
We have eaten here many times and have had good and not so good meals. The last time we had lunch here we returned two orders of muscles (they were rancid and should not have left the kitchen). The New England clam chowder was weird (a clear liquid base with some cream sitting on top). The onions rings were great as usual.
The service is excellent. We like to eat in the bar area which is open the outside. I wish they could be more consistent and not charge so much for many times just average good.
