Had to have one last great dinner at one of our favorites !
I am really going to miss Sly's. Every meal was special, and Carpinteria won't be the same without them. Thank you!
We are so very sorry to see this wonderful place close. Best of luck to you James and Annie!
The best gig in town!!!! Devestated to learn it will be closing.
Our dinner at Sly's was wonderful! It was also bittersweet. We went because we had just heard they were closing. We will miss Sly's greatly!
So sorry to see Sly’s Close....it was truly fantastic
Very sad to say that Sly's is closing Sunday, Sept. 23rd after a fabulous run of 10+ years. Best wishes for a wonderful retirement for James Sly and his wife. Their restaurant brought a lot of joy on fond memories to a lot of people!!
We are heartbroken that this world-class, local classic spot is closing in a week...get there, if you possibly can, before James and Annie Sly serve the last meal at Sly’s!!!!!
Sad sad day to find that this most favorite restaurant is closing!
Been a regular guest for years. Never disappoints. But sadly they are closing after 15 years. Thank you Sly and best to you in retirement.
We wanted to make one more trip to Sly's before they close for good in a couple of weeks. I dreamt about my scallops the day I made our reservation. They did not disappoint - delicious!! My husband had the lobster also wonderful and my friend had the sole - equally as wonderful. We will truly miss the authentic food that Sly's delivers. There is no other place like it! Good luck Sly and Annie on your next adventure!!
Wonderful evening all around. Sad to see this place go. We had cocktails, the seafood tower, salads, the Peter Luger steak, desserts and wine. All fantastic.
Unfortunately Sly's will be closing at the end of this month. The owners are retiring. This is a loss to the community but a reward for years of providing high quality food and service.
We went to Slys because we heard they were closing soon. I wish they weren't. The food was excellent as was the service. We went for brunch but would love to go for dinner. Don't know if I can get back there before they close.
It was delightful celebrating my birthday there. I had celebrated an anniversary the night they first opened in 2008 and really enjoyed that, too. I'm so sorry they are closing, although I no longer live in Carpinteria and have to drive there. It's a classy place!
sly’s has been my absolute favorite restaurant since it opened in 2008. i am super sad the sly’s are retiring however they are really generous about sharing james’ great recipes!!! better go before it’s too late!
Great service, all the food was good. I'm still not sure what the big deal about abalone is, but my father and husband LOVED IT. The veal marsala and beef bourguignon were delicious!
Sorry to say Slys will be closing Sep 23 2018. Will miss this wonderful place.
excellent food, i will miss Sly's but hope he has a happy retirement.
We have been celebrating August Birthdays at Sly's for several years. It is also a usual stop when we are in Carp visiting family. The restaurant and it's people will be sorely missed. Good luck to all.
We are going to miss you when you close! Dinner @ Sly's is always a special evening with excellently prepared food & a range of choices to appeal to everyone.
This is one of the classic restaurants to go to in the Central Coast area. James is the master at cooking abalone, no one does it better and he is also the least expensive. His daily specials, only one item, are always well worth the price. The wine list is well balanced in varieties as well as cost. They also feature a separate drink section which is composed of classic rarely made drinks, each with the date the drink was introduced, clear back to the mid 1800's. They also have true Louis salads, made with a real Louis dressing, not the Thousand Island type that most places use. The down side to the restaurant is that it has been sold. James is retiring and well deserved. The last day is September 23rd, before it becomes a trendy place under new ownership, supposedly trendy Italian. Very sad indeed. Make reservations, it is a must if you go now, well worth the effort.
Booked this for our 24th anniversary. We recently bought a place in the area and every time we passed Sly’s it was always packed! The place was so busy that it took us 30 minutes just to order, but our waiter apologized and went over a plate of onion rings! We had the seafood tower and the linguini with clams...both excellent! Peach cobbler and Julia Child’s dark chocolate mousse for dessert! We were very sad to learn that Sly’s will be closing it’s doors for good on Sept 23rd. Now we have to book brunch , lunch and happy hour before they close! This is a huge loss for Carpinteria!
This has been a favorite of ours for many years, even though it's a bit of a drive to get there. We heard they were closing for good, so made a point to take the train down from Santa Barbara and meet up with family from Ventura for at least one last dinner there. We weren't disappointed. Our waiter (Craig...?) was stellar, as always and every course of our meal was incredible. We will miss this gem of a restaurant, but wish James & Julia a happy and well-deserved retirement. The Bentley parked out front was also a great touch :)
Been coming to Sly's for years. Sad it's closing next month. I hope to be back a couple more times before it closes!
It's awful that he is closing on Sept. 23. Sly's is a great restaurant. Outstanding food and service. We wish him good luck on his retirement.
Sadly this restaurant is closing Sept. 23. I suggest anyone who wants to experience this gem (or revisit it) before then make a reservation and go! I will miss it.
Sadly, the most neglectful service experienced anywhere in many years of dining. After we ordered, our waitress did not reappear until we were 80% done with our meal. She spent more time with her back to her tables than I've ever seen. We would've ordered more but felt largely unwelcome. The food was OK, but the experience did not live up to the standard Sly's sets for itself. Quite disappointed.
Sorry they are closing. It’s been a “go to” in Santa Barbara/Carp.
Outstanding food at a good value. Extensive menu called a "steak place" but much more than that. Elegant without being snobby. Great service. Great place.
The food is fine dining at its best, with amazing service. It is a Carpinteria landmark, we have to go every time we visit!
Sly's is one of my favorite restaurants in Ventura County. The casual bar or the white-tableclothed dining room are equally perfect. Great salads, great fish, beautifully prepared meat, delicious desserts, and well-crafted cocktails are all attentively served. My favorites are the classic Louis salads, the melt-in-your mouth onion rings, and the happy hour steak. I also love the abalone, the coconut cake, and the really delicious sundae. There is something for everyone at Sly's. It's a small town Paris bistro close to a beautiful beach--whether or not that makes any sense to you, you should check it out.
Sly’s are Always Amazing !
This is restaurant is one of a kind with a great care
Taken in presentation , menu selection, ambience and cuisine.
I can’t say enough good about the food and I would like to know the chefs background.

Always exceptional and beautifully plated, cooked to perfection and served by capable and well trained servers.
We found Sly's a couple of years ago while passing through Carpenteria and make it a point to stop by when we can. A very varied menu with something for everyone. Out entire table was happy with their appetizers and dinners. Highly recommended. Best to make a reservation as it fills up fast.
The food and wine were superb as usual. The service was poor1 The waiter had a hearing problem and took a long time to service us. The check process took much too long because the waiter did not come to present the bill, then a different waiter took my credit card. Then the bill finally came and no one could find my credit card. Eventually, after too much time had passed everything got completed.
The valet service was excellent.
It is still a very good restaurant and this was an isolated incident. I would not hesitate to go there again.
Never disappointed with this restaurant, there aren’t enough like this.
As usual.......SUPERB! From the excellent attentive service to the consistent fine dining.
We absolutely loved our dinner at Sly’s! We will definitely be back each time we visit Carpinteria. Food was amazing and the service was impeccable. Loved everything about it!
My wife and I have eaten at Slys several times now and each time is as good as the first time which was great.
This was the first time we ate there with just the two of us and we will be doing this again. As usual the service and food were fantastic.
It is a bit pricey but you definitely get what you pay for. We have had Izzy as our server a couple of times and he puts on a good show with his sense of humor and great smile.
I have recommended Slys to several friends and they all say thanks for the good tip on such a fine dining experience.
