We were really looking forward to trying Slanting Door. Had read and heard good things, and we enjoy Vietnamese/South East Asian food. Nice water front location overlooking Bay Bridge. From there things were a let down. Way too noisy inside, could hardly have a conversation. Service was extremely slow. Crispy Spring rolls were very good. Rest of meal disappointing, clams with bacon broth way too salty. Chicken claypot ok but also super salty and I think it had been reheated in the microwave with some parts so hot that it burnt roof of mouth and others tepid. The side order of green beans with mushrooms arrived virtually cold and flavourless as a result. Seared Scallop dish, although cooked just right and not over done, seemed also to have been sitting a while, was cold and scallops slightly tough by the time it was brought to table.
We didn’t stay for dessert. Left feeling rather disappointed.
Another good lunch at SD
-imperial rolls were very fresh
-cellophane noodles with fresh crab. A must and staple of the menu
-prawns that were prepared I believe in a clay pit. Texture was perfect
-crepes. Really enjoyed the texture and fillings
Only issue was the fact there was a group that had a dog. They held it during the meal leaning over the table. It was not a service dog and pretty sure violated health codes. A turn off for sure at a upscale restaurant.
I think Slanted Door was the place to go ten years ago, but it’s showing its age. Food is good, as is service. Perhaps that’s enough to keep it going. But I was hoping for more, especially at the price they charge for shaking beef. Vietnamese coffee was quite good though.
The ambiance could be improved by a refresh of the interior. In particular, the textured popcorn ceiling looks like something from the 70’s.
Plan on a wait even when you have a reservation. We loitered at the hostess station for 30 minutes before being seated. The food was excellent as always and the service strong, especially in light of the many tables. It's a loud restaurant so if you want to have a real conversation, go early or late when the deafening roar is more tolerable.
Buena comida pero mucho tiempo entre un platillo y el otro.
This used to be one of our favorites, but the quality of the food has slipped. Everything we had was pretty tasteless. Very disappointing!
Whole red snapper was exceptional. Great presentation, moist and succulent. Best whole fish I have ever had!
Reception/Hosts could dial down the attitude
Food and Service were great otherwise!
We knew it was going to be noisy and ..... it was! Other than that highly recommend! Food was great!
Loud and active metropolitan atmosphere with beautiful views of the Bay Bridge, excellent food, and great service. Make a reservation!!
We know people have bad days - unfortunate our server was...didn’t go well while entertaining clients. Won’t take clients back
The waitress provided good service, but beverages didn’t show up couple of times until we asked about them. It seemed the busboys were not paying attention.
I have been eating here for several years and been a fan , last twice has been poor service and on Monday night with friends from Paris the host was terrible and when I left to get my bag was treated like I was an inconvenience, so will be staying away...... shame!
Kitchen very slow on 10/8/19. Food arrived at the table hap-hazard. Housekeeping and cleanliness was not the greatest. Restaurant's success seems to be more a result of hype than actual fine dining which it lacks.
fabulous food and VERY noisy. Too much noise for business lunch.
Second time dining here and it was just as good as it was two years ago. Exceptional food, awesome view, friendly staff and genuinely one of the best meals we’ve had in SF.
Perfect for a family special occasion or date night.
The location and ambiance are incredible. Friendly staff and attentive servers.
Unfortunately however, the food is entirely underwhelming for the price point.
$42 dollars before tax and tip for a rather small portion of shakey beef?
$33 before tax and tip for a plate of past their prime shrimp stir fried with onions?
Food was excellent. The Server explained wht the dishes are about. She suggesed how to serve them. Service was fantastic.
Tourist Just visiting the city
Our server was excellent and very accomodating. The dissatisfaction was with the front desk or the policy I was told. I cant get a table unless all parties are there. I told her I have a disabled person who walks slow and that I need a table so they can sit. I had to ask again recond time so eventually, the lady allowed me to sit before the entire party arrived when I told her I will order already because I'm rushing for an event. She placed us at the farthest table in the restaurant so the disabled party had to walk all the way there.
We had an excellent meal, good service and drinks. The Shaking beef and clay pot chicken have become staples when we go to Slanted Door. The Imperial rolls were the smallest I've ever seen! We ate them anyway and didn't complain, they were delicious.
Slanted Door doesn’t disappoint. The menu has something for everyone. The pork belly appetizer is a must have and the day boat scallops are delicious. Excellent cocktails.
The view is spectacular. Bay Bridge, ferry terminal and we were treated to a Fleet Week fireworks show that rivaled any Fourth of July or New Year we’ve spent in San Francisco.
It’s a loud dining room. Very vibrant and I’ve never seen it less than 90% occupied, even at the earliest or latest seatings.
The wine list is weak, should include more regional offerings (especially CA). The food is always good and creative but not over the top great. On a Saturday night manically busy and noisy. Certainly not the place to enjoy a calm and calculated “foodie experience” with Asian or Asian fusion in mind. And, by any standard not a good value for the cost.
Brilliant evening, Food was great, excellent service and a view over the Bay , with a fire work display thrown in. Try and get a booth as they face the waterfront.
Wow. Just wow. We heard this place would be good, but could not have expected what we tasted. Got the cabbage salad, the yellowtail, the tuna and the scallops. The tuna is the best tuna I've ever eaten. The scallops were good. The sauce they were in was spectacular. Wines are good, could use more options by the glass. And of course, the views are amazing.
This was my first time dining at The Slanted Door, My husband and I really enjoyed our meal. And, the view is worth a million dollars!! The spring rolls are delicious, the daikon rice cakes very good as well. We shared a chicken entree that I thought at $29 a bit spendy. The vanilla beignets were outstanding. Overall, a very good meal, but I think a bit too pricey.
The food was great but the service was horrible. We had an 8pm reservation and were seated at 8:40pm. The server was gone for 30 minutes at a time we had dirty dishes and empty drinks stacking on our table. But the food was great and delivered fast.
The food was amazing and plentiful. The noise level was extreme, even though we had a table in the back against the windows. It was hard to hear my dining partners. For me, this is a huge drawback and would give me pause to go back. Maybe they have takeout?
Food was mostly good, but, of 6 dishes, 3 were quite good, 2 were mediocre, 1, was boring. The price point would imply that all, or close to all dishes should be really good. Wine prices at high end of reasonable. Nice views.
Bustling place. Food was great. Ability to mix and match and piecemeal the app menu was awesome.
Big disappointment. It's not the Slanted Door of old. The Shaking Beef is ridiculously over priced, the portion is tiny, and the flavor just beef and onions with some lemon. Not good. The cellophane noodles with crab was a little better, but lacking punch.
Despite the fact that we had a reservation and we arrived early, our seating was late. The male hostess was extremely rude and should go to some customer training or be removed
Food was ok
It took 20 minutes for my drink order to come although those I was sitting had all been served theirs. Two of our entrees came out, but it took another 20 minutes before the third and final entree was brought out. Our waiter had no personality at all and we barely even saw him. A busser brought out our food and the waiter did not once check in to see if we were doing okay. Service has gone way down since the last few times I have been there! Definitely will not be heading back there any time soon.
Food and ambience were ok. The service and attitude of our waitress was lacking to say the least. Seems they do have waitresses/waiters that might provide better service than ours. Another waitress not serving us noticed we had a need and offered to supply our need which was very nice of her. When we wanted our bill, it took quite a while before we were able to locate our waitress. Not impressed at all.
Great meal. We had three appetizers and were stuffed. But, we did have room for dessert and it was so worth those extra calories. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. Dishes were quick to come and promptly cleaned off the table when we were finished. The whole experience was 5 star.
Our server Grey Dey was impeccable in every way and accommodated very specific food needs of one of our guests to make an amazing array for all of us to taste and enjoy b
The view is really all this restaurant offers. Their food is sub-par and the tuna entree was barely edible
Food was amazing as always, i forgot how NOISY it is as a restaurant, but other than that, service is good, location is great, never disappoints.
Great food. Fun to share plates and taste many dishes. Very loud. Hard to have any conversation.
Food is better than average. It’s just too noisy.
