This was the final meal at Slanted Door before the SF Bay Area "Shelter in Place" went into effect. The food was wonderful (as usual), the restaurant almost empty and our server, who was friendly and professional, talked to us about the situation: his days had been reduced to two a week, so much that he was going to look for work in other areas, perhaps even a desk job. I don't know how that will be possible right now. We left the biggest tip we could afford along with our best wishes and highest hopes that everyone will be able to weather this storm. I hope we will be able to revisit Slanted Door in the near future, it's a dining marvel.
Great service. Delicious food. Loved the rice cakes and the carrots!!!!
Food was very very good. Service was ok. Foods very expensive and a good ambience
This place has fantastic flavors and an amazing view of the Bay Bridge. They have a great spin on Asian food and it is so fun as a result. The wait staff is right on it and make it a nice experience.
Food and drinks were overpriced for what you were getting. Food was not as good as it was 2 years ago. Service was good.
Our waiter, Grey, was delightful. He gave us a good wine recommendation and was very attentive. Lovely eating experience.
Everything about our dining experience was great! Drinks, food, ambience and service were all exceptional. Look forward to returning.
Food was excellent! Definitely worth a return again and again! (Have to try all the other dishes!) The service was outstanding! What took me so long to visit?! Request booths, with view of the Bay.
Friendly and patient service - with wonderful views!
We had a 2:30 reservation on Sunday afternoon. We were rushed from the moment we sat down. As soon as our drinks arrived we were told we had to place our order the kitchen was closing in 10 minutes. Our appetizer arrived and within 10 minutes the balance of our meal arrived all at once. Before we finished our salad the entrees where cold and unappetizing. Several times during the meal we where asked if our plates could be removed while we were still eating. Slanted Doo has been a long standing favorite of ours , I can’t tell you our disappointment. Spending $250.00 on lunch should not feel as though you are an annoyance. We won’t consider returning.
Delicious food and great views of the harbor. Service friendly and efficient. Put it on your list.
We were celebrating three family birthdays. Our meal was excellent topped off by the outrageous cotton candy. Much more fun than a birthday cake! Thanks to all who served us for a job well done.
Great as always!
It was so lackluster. THe food was just one note and I'm so sorry to say it. We were two couples - they ordered a TON of appetizers and one main, we ordered one appetizer, two sides and two mains. We didn't hear one another order (we are vegan - so no sharing -- we told our server this from the start) - and when the food came out it was wildly unbalanced. We couldn't figure why the server didn't point this out to the table (knowing we were not sharing because of differing food preferences) - and suggest that our sides come out with the appetizers. It was all just really weird. Plus the restaurant had a nice crowd, but wasn't full and we were seated away from windows at a pretty bland table. Just from the food to the service to the setting - it was flat. I'm sorry to say, we won't be back.
Very good experience with great service and amazing food. I have Celiac so I’m Gluten Free, they have a very GF friendly menu and provided more options to make other dishes GF for me. Our server was excellent. Late lunches on weekends are the best to avoid the crowds.
Innovative flavors prepared to perfection. Service was ok, but cellophane noodles with Dungeness crab and bok choy were glorious.
there is a dumpling that is one of the most delicious things I have ever tasted... shrimp, water chestnut, etc etc. YUM!
Pros: Great views of the Bay and ships. Nice atmosphere and decor. Green papaya salad was great.
Cons: The rest of our food was quite mediocre. I’ve eaten in strip mall Vietnamese places that offered more flavorful, fresh-tasting versions of the standards we tried here, such a Pho and spring rolls. Very disappointing food, especially for the astronomic prices, even at lunch (i.e. $38 for a lunch entree of, essentially, stir-fried shrimp). Situated inside the Ferry Market Plaza, there are sooo many excellent options for dining that I felt totally ripped off. Even the service was pretty meh. Would not recommend. Go get a mild-blowing grilled cheese from Cowgirl Creamery instead. Your wallet will thank you.
This place was amazing. The atmosphere was electric, the view was stunning, and the food was to die for. My wife and I shared the pineapple chutney ahi tuna, and the shaking steak. Best surf and turf ever! This place is a most go to for anyone traveling to San Francisco!
Great meal, a little pricey but delicious and definitely a very unique experience
Wonderful food, excellent service, very loud.
My wife and I recently celebrated our wedding anniversary at The Slanted Door. We both lived in the neighborhood when T S D first opened on Valencia St so many years ago, so it holds a special place in our hearts. Plus we love the food and I even creat dishes at home from their cookbook so it's also fun to compare how I do. I do pretty well. Just saying. I've also done my time as a waiter so I've earned my place to critique a little. The restaurant is now in the Ferry Building and high-end style has replaced the charm of its humble beginnings. Our table faced the water and the view was amazing. Our waitress was super friendly and enjoyable. The service overall was very good. The problem we had was that the food we ordered didn't show up but stuff that we didn't order did. My second cocktail never arrived until I asked about it but the wine was already open. Long story short it was a hectic confused effort on their part but we made the most of it and had a good time. The professional approach from our waitress really helped as she never appeared frazzled or upset. This led me to believe that at this point the restaurant is so busy and successful that nobody stresses over these mistakes and comping the food is no big deal. I would say that if you want to eat at The Slanted Door, DO IT. Have fun and be relaxed. Go with the flow, Yo.
Slanted Door is one of my go to restaurants in San Francisco when I want a consistent beautiful dinner. This time I took a friend for her 60th birthday, the first time that she had been to Slanted Door. She loved it. Not only was the food beautifully prepared, but the service is always warm and spot on with attentiveness but not intrusive hovering. Well Done.
The food here never disappoints you. It's both beautiful and comforting. The service at Slanted Door is generally very polished - I think everyone appreciates working at this (still) cutting edge restaurant.
We ate chive and shrimp dumplings, which I thought were delicious. Also Imperial spring rolls which were a lot of work but still tasty. Our cocktails and table service were outstanding, too. After the initial appetizers and drinks, however, the meal fell apart. The glazed shrimp were inedible. The replacement shaking beef was bland and a small portion that cost a whopping $43. The glass noodles with crab were abundant with noodles and minimal on crab. The dish tasted just "ok". For $39 and with the understanding that The Slanted Door is best known for their seafood dishes, we feel meal was a very big let down.
Food was good as was service. Prices for lunch way over priced. Claypot chicken consisted of 8 pieces of chicken in broth for $35, crispy spring rolls for $25 - too much money for not a lot of food. Won't be back.
When we got there they said they couldn’t serve us anymore since they had a problem with the water. Even though they had our contact info they didn’t call beforehand and waited until we were there to tell us we could not come in.
Amazing food, wine list and service.
Good ambience but the food doesn't justify the cost.
I’ve been to Slanted Door many times. It’s amazing how it stays the same fantastic place with friendly service and delicious creative easy food.
For sure one of my favourite restaurants in the West Coast.
Lunch or dinner is always very good.
Great meal, excellent service beautiful setting.
Food quality has declined along with steep price increase. Unlikely to revisit this place
This is a difficult review to write. There are so many great things to say about Slanted Door. Great staff, pleasant, efficient, eager to please. The view of the bay from every table is a plus, although it’s really a view of all the folks on the promenade, looking at the great view, but I’m splitting hairs.
So why is this a two? Well, lunch for two, with one (only one) glass of champagne, two appetizers, two entrees and two desserts. $203.00. And frankly one dish, the noodle dish with chicken, was very ordinary, and one, the tofu main course, was spectacular. The Pork Ribs appetizer was huge, 5 big fat ribs piled on the plate. After the first one, the rest just stayed on the plate, very tough, very fatty and difficult to chew. Seriously? The noodle dish with chicken was OK, but La Amour De Saigon on West Portal serves a much better version. The desserts were yummy, though.
This is a beautiful place, with surprisingly ordinary food, at extraordinary prices. This 4th trip is my last however. Too many better choices.
Fabulous food, good service but just too noisy.
Enjoyed an amazing Saturday evening dinner at the premium booth with the spectacular Bay Bridge view. The Pacific oysters, amberjack crudo and Ahi poke are great starters paired with a bottle of Ghostwriter Pinot Noir and lots of Chopin vodka. Those were followed with the fresh spring rolls and imperial rolls. So outrageously decadent and delicious. For the mains, the whole braised black bass was truly phenomenal but we still had to taste the shaking beef, Monterey spicy squid, and cellophane noodles with Dungeness crab.....just fantastic Vietnamese cuisine at a spectacular level of flavor and sophistication. But desserts are not to be ignored at Slanted Door and the confection plate with the cotton candy is just like the carnival. Our waiter “Finn” was an old pro, took care of us in an outstanding manner and kept the drinks coming.
This is the best Asian restaurant I have ever been to. It's not cheap, but the food is so superb, it doesn't matter.
Good. But just did not make me want to die and go back for more..... like in the late 90’s when it was on Valencia.
Of course the views were amazing and the atmosphere was so different from the dark narrow restaurant it once was, but the food just did not wow me like it once did.
Cocktails were great. Service was great.
Good Vietnamese dishes, sizable portions and efficient service. Appropriate wine list. Noise level kind of high.
good food but some dishes have gone downhill, shaking beef dry and overcooked, crab noodles devoid of crab, rolls and papaya salad excellent as were ribs. VERY PRICEY for what you get.
