The Slanted Door offers diners a gourmet experience where the food on the plate looks as beautiful as the views of the Bay Bridge and the Bay Lights in the evening from every table. Charles Phan, the executive chef, goes to the root of the dishes to represent the food authentically with a modern twist. The Slanted Door offers lunch and dinner menus with a variety of appetizers, palate cleansers and main dishes.

The meals consist of organic elements including grass-fed beef and pasture-raised, cage-free chickens. Local seafood options include wild Gulf shrimp, spicy Monterey squid and seared Ahi tuna, or visitors can take advantage of the raw seafood bar. Those looking for a vegetarian or vegan menu will find plenty of options available. The Slanted Door offers a family-style menu and a wide selection of desserts with an extensive bar menu to wash it all down.

Been coming here since they opened, but it had been a few years. Happy to report it is still one of the best restaurants in San Francisco. Amazing food, view, and service. No wonder it can still be a challenge to get in.

Lamb chops undercooked. Hanging beef underdone. Bok Choy was the best of the 5 dishes we ordered. Place was packed and service hindered by customers wandering all over the restaurant taking selfies.

Great restaurant but not one of their better nights

What happened?!?! Food used to be great here but not anymore. Very, very mediocre food. Service was below average, too. The location and view are still fabulous! I invited a friend I hadn’t seen in a long time and I was totally embarrassed. There are so many other Asian-fusion and Vietnamese places now - will never return.

This restaurant, located in the SF Ferry Building, seems overpriced and a bit overrated. $43 for their “signature” shaking beef dish seems over the top. It is good but not great and not a whole lot of food. Our tab for three people, without alcohol and before tip, was $120 and we left feeling like we didn’t eat much. Recommended for people seeking “designer” Vietnamese food with a great view of SF bay.

Always delicious! The problem is that they are always booked or overbooked because reservation times are not on time and food takes way too long to come out. Our dinner was just about 3 hours- which is great when you have an old friend to catch up with and you’re not starving! I had both those things (old friend and not starving!) so the evening was delightful. Just be aware that you’ll have a nice, long evening there.

Service is pretty slow, and we had to flag our waiter down for basics like water refills and appropriate utensils for the dishes being brought out. Food was overall salty.

I've been following the Slanted Door since their days in the Mission. It's a San Francisco institution! The waterfront location is gorgeous and buzzing with people! The food, as always, amazing! A couple of things to improve upon: the front of the house and the bussers need more training. The blonde hostess was unfriendly and couldn't be bothered to crack a smile as we checked in. Hello? You're in a service business - SMILE when you greet your guests. Although our waitress was lovely and charming, the bus staff needs more training. As our table was being reset for the main course, the busser placed a steak knife on a plate and slid it on the table towards me and it stopped with the knife facing my chest! We were only a table of 4 and he couldn't come around the table to place it down properly. He did that to everyone in our party!
Also perhaps it is time to update the bathrooms.

I wanted this to be great but it just wasn’t. Dumplings were delicious and the rest (imperial rolls, ribs, shaken beef) were fine but not worth that price. Delicious cocktail (endless summer) though! Bathroom was pretty gross for a restaurant of that caliber.

The hostess completely ignored us when we tried to check in. A bar waitress finally helped us get settled. I could have made the same food in my own kitchen, seared scallops and crab infused noodles. Noise levels were outrageous! This is another example of a restaurant gaining attention and then taking itself far too seriously where customers don’t seem to matter. We ave been twice but will not return,

My second visit to Slanted Door, but already planning my return. The food was very good. Ever so slightly overcooked prawns kept it from being stellar, but everything was so flavorful! Delightful server. Quite enthusiastic about the food, and knowledgeable about the wine offerings, he steered us to just the right choices. Pricey, but well worth it.

We were two couples, with a longstanding 7:45pm reservation. We arrived about 5 minutes early, hoping to be seated right away, or at least at our reservation time. We weren’t seated until 8:10, although I saw empty tables from 7:45 on. One was a 6-top, but it was empty even after we were finally seated.
It was very noisy, busy and energetic - but that made it more exciting than it otherwise would have been. The service from there on was OK, but not especially remarkable. One of us was given the wrong (lunch) menu, and we shared a dinner menu because we couldn’t get a 4th dinner menu in a timely manner. Drinks, of course, arrived promptly.
Prices are very high, and some dishes are worth it (roasted whole fish especially) - others not: the regular spring rolls were mostly rice noodle wrapped in a bit of flavorless pork and only a tiny sliver of shrimp. By contrast, the vegetarian spring rolls were much better. However, none of it was better than the midpriced Chinese restaurant on the peninsula where we’d eaten the previous night.
All in all, a good-enough meal but a bit disappointing compared to previous visits to this San Francisco landmark restaurant. We struck up a lively conversation with the Brazilian women at the adjacent table, and that redeemed the evening!

Our food was delicious. Our server was friendly, helpful and professional, checking on us unobtrusively throughout our meal. Service was timely and professional. We also enjoyed their non-alcoholic offerings, such as their very tasty elderflower spritzer. To top it all off, it was our anniversary and they surprised us with a huge ball of spun sugar (cotton candy) for dessert, which was tasty and fun to eat.
