The Slanted Door offers diners a gourmet experience where the food on the plate looks as beautiful as the views of the Golden Gate Bridge from every table. Charles Phan, the executive chef, goes to the root of the dishes to represent the food authentically with a modern twist. The meals consist of organic elements including grass-fed beef and pasture-raised, cage-free chickens. Local seafood options include wild Gulf shrimp, spicy Monterey squid and seared Ahi tuna, or visitors can take advantage of the raw seafood bar. Although the food was tasty, we wonder if there's a new chef. The Imperial Rolls and chicken dish we ordered because we'd liked them so much before were much spicier than we remembered.

This restaurant came so highly recommended that I was suspect - but- no- it was truly a fabulous dining experience at every level. Kelly's (our server) help, was a great indication of the level of quality, intelligence and care that this restaurant showcased. She was knowledgeable about the deep and offbeat wine list and helpful about choosing foods to create a balanced meal for the group I was part of- all well travelled, sophisticated eaters, some of whom have regularly eaten their way through Vietnam and others who are professional, trained chefs. The lovely view and fancy space gave us worry again that the food would be watered down for american palates in a way that so many places do. It was not. The dishes felt and tasted authentic yet creative at the same time. This is neither homey food nor hootie- tootie chic cuisine for chic's sake. The food had the care and skill of a chef. The caramel chicken, a mark of a great Vietnamese cook, was succulent and well balanced and I cant wait to go back sample the shrimp version. It was also a generous portion. The steamed shrimp dumplings (wonderfully and fearlessly gelatinous) and sauteed fresh green garlic versions are an absolute musts. The veggies and seafood were handled with aplumb- tender crisp and flavor rich and most are well spiced, and nothing was overly hot for no reason. The noodle dish, alas, has little crab, but what there was, was delish, but the proteins and veggies were the best. The cauliflower and romescu was memorable. You can find dishes that are also a bit whimsical, and a bit showy, like the cotton candy dessert and some of the old world drinks.
The view of the bay bridge was extraordinary and sitting in a booth also allowed us to see the professional kitchen at work. Well seasoned and smart, this meal,and this restaurant, even in a city full of good and very good meal, stands amongst the very best. This is what a genuinely top of line chef and thoughtful staff can do. Go.
Every dish was beautifully presented. Great venue for out of town visitors. We had a great waiter who really read our table well. We had a great time. Most of the food was very good, especially the vegetarian fried rolls, the crab cellophane noodles, and the scallops. Was a bit disappointed in the shaking beef (it's tough -- I expected melt-in-your-mouth) and then suddenly remembered I had been disappointed in the beef the last time I ate here. So I'll be back again and definitely will skip the beef from now on.

Sure their drinks are expensive but extremely well made. Much care is involved in the makings. Their awesome, yes even at $14.
Food...?Stick with their Asian menu items. Meat? Forget it. Used to be much better then it is now. Don't know why, but its certainly not Prime grade. I used to love their pork spareribs, not anymore. I tried the filet Mignon... not good. Seriously, I know good filet mignon, very disappointing.
Yes I'll go back, for my favorite drinks, and my favorite rolls and salads.

Love. This restaurant! Great meeting place for friends fr 3 counties. Easy access to public transportation, ferry BART etc.
The place looks and feels rundown. The bathrooms are really unkept and rundown. The food was tasty but felt rushed or sloppy give the high price. Our waitress was nice but stretched way to thin, so not very attentive.

We enjoyed our visit to the slanted door. Cocktails and appetizers were excellent. Mains were not as good. Ambiance is nice, gorgeous view over the water, but volume was pretty loud so it was harder to talk with our group.

We've been to The Slanted Door several times and it's always been quite stellar. Unfortunately, we must have chosen and "off-night" to take our european friends to dine there. The crispy rolls (shrimp & pork) were extremely good, but the ribs were a little tough and just a bit difficult to get off the bone. The cellophane noodles with dungeness crab was actually a little bland and did not taste very strongly of crab. The Shaking Beef was beautifully prepared and seasoned, but the beef was tough. The desserts were impeccable as always. I didn't bring anything up to the waitstaff because I didn't want to spoil the mood of reuniting with our friends. We're certainly open to trying it again. We were just a bit disappointed that evening

Came here with 3 of my oldest dearest friends - we're women in our 50's who have known each other for 25+ years. Our gatherings are very special as our lives are very full. Coming to Slanted Door was one of the best gathering places we have chosen in recent times. The table looking out at the water, lots of foodie quality gastronomy, many choices for veggie lovers, lovely wine selection, ability to talk while still feeling there is lively atmosphere, service was impeccable (attended to often but not overbearing and we did NOT feel rushed to leave, which is huge in my book). We agreed that this might indeed be our new IT place for future gatherings. One of us had never been, a few of us had been but not recently and we remarked that it NEVER disappoints. We came on Sunday at noon. There was a couple next to us who was filming their whole eating experience with a LARGE camera and microphone, which was ridiculous, but it is film worthy 8) . I actually took a photo of them filming their eating experience because it was SO absurd. It really is so tacky and against all norms of social etiquette.

As always, food was really good, the crab cellophane noodles to die for. The brussel sprouts, on season, were delicious. Definitely you leave wishing to come back soon. Only downside is pricing for some items, I do not think that a beef dish should be over 40 dollars, unless they want you to be a vegetarian.

Every year, our department has dinner at a special restaurant (at least, that's what I prefer). While I have been to Slanted Door a number of times through the years, my colleagues have either been here once (when I chose it for a lunch over 10 years ago) or not at all (for the new staff). So I'm always pleased to see how they react to a place that they would not normally try.
We were seated in a booth facing the windows. With the Bay Bridge lights and a gorgeous full moon rising above it, that experience alone was worth the visit! And when no one knew what to choose, our server suggested Slanted Door's favorite standards: shaking beef, special spring rolls, crab cellophane noodles, chicken clay pot... the list goes on and on. You can't go wrong. The group loved all of it (or were they feeling good about the food because the atmosphere was so delightful?). Service was also impeccable.
It's good to know that Slanted Door has kept up its standards. I hope to visit again soon.

We had never had Vietnamese food before and decided to give it a try. It was all wonderful! The best meal of he trip. And the bay view was spectacular. I highly recommend to everyone.
Excellent customer service. Although we were a "walk in" we were seated immediately, as is their policy on Walk In Tuesdays and wasn't hurried out after the 7:30 limit. I found that we were never rushed and our service level remained at a high level.

Having been to Slanted Door many times over many years, the food was just as good as I first remember. Unfortunately, we had some pretty crappy service and found ourselves, basically alone in the restaurant at the end of a lunch service, sitting there wondering where everyone was and why they didn't want to sell us more drinks. I've never experienced bad service during dinner. At some point our server disappeared entirely never to be seen again, and someone else finally came to help. Still recommended.
