Skates on the Bay Ratings and Reviews
Pros: excellent food and ambience. Very festive for the holidays.
Cons: terrible service. Dinner reservation was at 6:15 & did not start getting food until 7pm. We had to ask for bread to tide us over until meals arrived. There was a large party table next to ours, therefore the tables nearby were ignored. Very loud due to large party celebrating. In hindsight, we should have eaten in the bar. The food was very good, once it arrived, however we were very disappointed overall.
Skates is a destination type restaurant as they have a spectacular view going for them. It's the main reason I go there. This time, it was my birthday and that was noted on the reservation as well as a reminder when we arrived. The birthday was only acknowledged with a "happy birthday" not the customary single dessert with a candle. That was disappointing.
I was anxious for a seafood Louie and remembered the previous time I had one, the flacid lettuce was disappointing as was the tiny amount of seafood. Well, this one was not much better. I got two shrimp, albeit decent sized and a scant amount of hair thin crab atop a small amount of chopped lettuce of some sort. It was the size of a dinner salad and I was still hungry after finishing and I ate it only because I was so famished. At $22 I thought I'd have a big salad. Others at our table had satisfactory food especially the wonderful clam chowder.
Service is very good here and I'm sure they have a new scrooge type policy when it comes to birthdays. Not the servers fault. I had several other birthday dinners and lunches this year and all of them served the birthday and candle dessert. Disappointing.
I did not schedule my reservation on Dec 2 2017. My reservation is for Dec 23 2017 at 6:30. I hope when i get there I will have a table for my Birthday. I did this on Open Table. I've try to call skate to confirm my reservation but the line stays busy. I will be very upset if my reservation for that day didn't go though. Can some one email me let me know or confirm my reservation. Thank you so much.
Not our first trip to Skates By The Bay. Always a pleasant ambiance & the specialty cocktails are never disappointing. The dinner menus showed some wear, but that didn’t affect the excellent food. We were treating my father in law to an early Xmas dinner & show. He loved his petite Louie salad & dinner special the steelhead salmon. I thoroughly enjoyed the Pacific Sashimi Ahi roll. My husband chose the sea bass, but unfortunately, it was overdone because our server mixed up the cooked level with my father in law ‘s order. All in all, the experience was great!! We will be back!!
Great place to meet friends for lunch. It is so convenient to meet people from Marin, Oakland, Alameda, Richmond. The best part is the free parking.
View is beautiful and relaxing. Food is good solid American food. Open faced crab sandwiches wonderfully rich. Service is always fabulous.
Fettuccine with shrimp and crab in parm cream sauce was dry and clumpy — asked for more sauce but there wasn’t enough sauce in the world. Sent back the Creme Brûlée (which they called Burnt Cream) because it had the consistency of rice pudding, not lite custard. Overpriced. So disappointed.
We loved the apps we ordered, but we also ordered over a dozen oysters and every single one had shell fragments in it. We ordered about $70 worth of oysters and when we mentioned it to our server she apologized but did nothing for us. Considering how many oysters they sell I would expect them to be able to shuck an oyster better than the typical joe shmo.
The view is incredible at least.
We always enjoy Skates. Good food, great service, a beautiful view, delicious cocktails, and care is always taken with dietary restrictions. The crab & artichoke dip alone keeps me coming back. The one puzzling thing is how bad the reservations system is in comparison to the rest of the experience. We never show up without reservations, we arrive on time, and yet we have never once been greeted with "your table is ready" or even "your table is almost ready." Instead, it's always "it's about a 10 minute wait" or "there's one table in front of you." It consistently feels as if there's a disconnect between the luxury experience once you're seated and the Denny's 'get in line' experience when you arrive. But if you can forgive this, it's worth the drive!
My daughter and I went here for Thanksgiving dinner, just the two of us, and it was the best dinner I have had in a long time. The food was excellent even though it was a special menu for Thanksgiving and did not have all the menu items. The Thanksgiving dinner, which I ordered was excellent. The mussels, and crab dip with bread, both appetizers, were delicious also. The Moscow Mule drinks I had were perfect for the occasion, but the dinner my daughter ordered with the beef medallions was less to be desired. The meat was dry and the medallion beef pieces were extremely small for a $38.00 meal. I suggested the Thanksgiving dinner, but she insisted on having beef. I will without a doubt go back to 'Skates by the Bay' to have dinner or celebrate a special occasion. The view is perfect and one of the best in the Bay. Cheers!
I had not been to Skate’s for at least 8 years. Last time I was there I thought it was too dark and the food was not worth the price. Now, what a difference! Much brighter, good colors on the walls, Superb Service, great food and prices were fair. Not to mention the Awe Inspiring View of the Golden Gate Bridge at Sunset! I will return for business meetings and also for family special occasions!
We go to Skates for Thanksgiving dinner and this year was not as good as normal. The quality of the food was good but some of our meals were not as hot as they should be and hence they cooled very fast. We were going to complain but we didn't want to spoil the event for our large group. Several drinks were also a problem and they need to get this part right as they are charging very high prices for drinks. But..........the view and ambiance trump all the problems and we would probably go back but not for TG dinner.
All staff were friendly, helpful and doing their best to serve us well (group of six). However may be due to shortage of staff, the service was rather slow. We always take our overseas visitors there for lunch. Although food is good, but it seems the menu has not changed since my last 3 visits. Hopefully i will find new menu on my next visit.
