Skates on the Bay Ratings and Reviews
Wowwwwwwwwwwwwww I really appreciate this experience I will never forget and I will be back! I don't see myself ever returning to olive garden. I used to frequent olive garden, not anymore. Its like I cheated on my" wife" ( olive garden) . I want a " divorce" , i have found better. lol my new girl friend( skates on bay) is so much more fresher and prettier .lol Even though it cost a little more it is all around better .
Skates on the Bay is well-known for seafood but also serves great steaks. The "Beef Filet Trio" is a good example: each filet was prepared in a different style and served with asparagus, fried onions, and potatoes. I hope this Trio will stay on the menu for a while!
We came here to celebrate our anniversary. We made a reservation for two ahead of time, but at the time couldn't request a window-side seat. Once we arrived we checked-in immediately and were able to get our window seat after a 10-15min, which we didn't mind. We went right as the sun was setting and the view was just amazing. The ambiance of the restaurant is nice. Lighting is not too dark, but also not too bright. The service is impeccable.
Unfortunately, the food was pretty sub-par for the price you pay. ~$35 for entre. We ordered two appetizers, a beverage, and two entres. The Mussels we ordered tasted good, but after a few bites, it seemed a bit too rich to finish. The yellowtail sashimi we ordered was terribly disappointing as it came out seared! it pretty much tasted like canned tuna, with a super fishy taste/odor. The dish was $18.
Entres were okay, but seemed more like something out of an applebees. For a nice restaurant in a foodie city like Berkeley, the menu could use some overhauling. My ahi was cooked well, but the crust was waaay too peppered, so much that it overpowered the fish. The rice on my dish was slightly undercooked, but the flavors were excellent. The rest of the dish was not memorable.
The steaks were cooked medium well, but a bit tendony and hard to chew at times.
My Drink, Old Fashioned, was standard, and well made. I enjoyed it.
Skates seems to be getting a bit out-dated it seems.
I'll probably still bring my parents by the next time they're in town as they'll love the views.
The setting is very nice; the view is tremendous! The menu has interesting variety and some inventive dishes, but the food was just ok. The service was fine; however, unimpressive. The paper menus were very worn which contributed to an impression that this place is not on their A game.
I came to Skates on the Bay because I have heard nothing but great things about this place! Of course it lived up to my expectations. My server Nicole was super friendly very knowledgeable about the menu and gave great recommendations. The food was fantastic as well my whole family loved all there meals. Since it was my birthday they made it special and we sat at a window table and watched the sunset which made it a very pleasant evening. Overall, my experience at Skates On the Bay was a very good one and I plan on coming back soon!
I was disappointed with Skates. We have been coming to this restaurant when we are in the area for special occasions. However the restaurant looks very tired and needs sprucing up. The food was also not worth the pricing...the clam chowder’s temperature needed to be warmer...the focaccia was not as tasty as it was in the past. I would rate the food as just mediocre... “Way over priced for what you get...” (we live 2+ hours away and were on our way home from SFO airport). Will probably choose another restaurant next time.
I haven't been to Skates in a few years and was excited to go with my parents when they suggested it. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. I remember this salt encased prime rib that was delicious and tender. My prime rib last night was tough! Not what one would expect with a prime rib. The potato au gratin was so hard on the outside that I couldn't even cut it. It was hard and chewy and tasted like there was nutmeg in it . I believed it to be reheated. We paid $38 a plate for the prime rib and I can't tell you how ripped off I feel. Hopefully this was just an off night but I won't be going back any time soon to find out. Such a shame.
Skates by the Bay is located at the Berkeley waterfront. There are adequate parking. The view is beautiful especially during the sunset hours. The service is excellent. The seafood dishes are very good. I ordered a pork loin entree for a change and it was very nice. I highly recommend it for special occasions or even casual dining.
Fantastic location with a gorgeous view of the sunset over the bay! Get there early so you can walk the pier before you eat: it is gated off after dark so we missed our chance. We had oysters and king crab for cold appetizers: oysters were good, but the selection was small. Entrees are generous, and well cooked but not exceptional. The chocolate decadence dessert was delicious and I got a very nice shot of bourbon (glad I did not go for a double). All in all a very nice place I’d be happy to return to when I am next in Berkeley.
Our table was near the view, but the people on the right side facing the view was blinded by the sun. The waiter did not adjust the blinds. This was a table for seven.
Two out of three alcohol drink orders came out wrong, but corrected. One order was a cocktail that was watered down.
Bread was not served, even though we saw other tables with bread.
Three out of seven dinners came out completely wrong. There are few vegetarian options, and those were the ones that had the orders wrong. Two of them just ate what they got and we had to send one back. The waiter acted like it was our fault.
Finally, when the rest of the orders came out the three fish orders were undercooked. One person ended up getting sick later, but no one else did.
I took my husband to this place for his birthday and at least his meal came out right. He says it was average. Not worth the $360 price tag. I use to work at restaurants so I am always a big tipper. Now I wish I could take my tip back.
This was our first and last time we will ever go to this place again! Please do not waist your time or money.
Waitress was wonderful and very friendly. If you have a view of the water that was great...if not, that’s a bummer. The food was fine...but I suspect you don’t go there for the food. Bathrooms need attention...floor was dirty (sticky?) and one stall was broken. bar had “that smell”, where the carpet really needs to be cleaned.. It was my moms birthday, and she had a good time, and that is all that counts.
Server was unknowledgeable of what was the menu and what was in the dishes. I asked her what was in an item and asked to look at a menu. Also she was extremely slow and forgot to bring the complimentary bread until we asked for it which took her 15mins to get. Food was C quality and service was D-/F.
I’m so unimpressed by the service here. I made a reservation over a week in advance for a special occasion with a large party. We started off pretty well. We were seated early and were assigned 2 servers for the duration of the meal.
However, our service went south after we were served appetizers. Some of our drinks took over 20 min to arrive and our dinner took even longer to arrive to the table. Not only that, this was a birthday celebration where they brought out the cake without clearing the table OR bringing silverware or plates to serve it. The guest of honor was actually asked if they should bring plates and silverware. Were they expecting us all to eat like barbarians, especially when they charge a $2.50/pp cake cutting fee!!! Come on now. Get it together. Just because gratuity is included for large parties, doesn’t mean that sub-par service is acceptable. All in all, a complaint was made to the manager and I hope that they really clean up their act soon. No one deserves to have their special occasion dinner to be treated like an early Monday morning lunch.
