Skates on the Bay Ratings and Reviews
My family and I visited the East Bay for a special Christmas event and decided to reserve a table at Skates on the Bay on December 27. We would not recommend this restaurant. We were seated around 6:15 which was early for a 6:30 pm reservation. No complaint about that or the server. By the time we were seated, they were out of Scallops, Pork Loin and Root Beer - we were told after we ordered them. The salmon we ordered was a very small piece and dry. The salad was so overly dressed that it was not only limp but inedible. The prices for th efood were exorbitant for the lack of quality. The presentation of the salmon and vegetables on the plate was awful with over half of the plate with no food on it.
We had deserts for the kids to make up for the terrible dinner. The kids Sundaes were edible.
We dine out frequently and this ranks as one of the worst places we have been. Take you money to another restaurant and enjoy.
Loved the restaurant, our server Oscar I believe Was his name wasn’t attentive at all. Thankfully what I believe Was a good runner was much involved with our table then he was. It was a very busy night so maybe our server was overwhelmed, but the rest of the restaurant seemed to be keeping up well. I will Try again, hopefully with a better server this restaurant maybe come a favorite of mine. We came from San Jose to eat by the water and enjoy a nice time, which we did.
They had a special menu for xmas day which was quite well rounded. I won't mention the atmosphere as that has been covered in all the other reviews. I ordered the peppercorn salmon and the spouse ordered the cioppino. We had the crab artichoke dip for starters then for dessert I had the gingerbread pudding and the spouse opted for the chocolate ganache. The salmon was not farmed raised but it was mediocre quality, too mushy for my liking. The accompanying green bean and fingerling potatoes were low-quality produce that had had a distinct mold taste. The appetizer was average, I would say about the quality of Applebees. My dessert was sickeningly sweet so I only ate the ice cream. The spouse did not like the salmon in the cioppino but liked everything else. Indeed the cioppino had a great spicy flavor. We picked the house red wine which was terrible. The bill was about $150 which is about average. I was just happy to find a place open for xmas other than dennys.
I came here on Christmas Day, which happens to be my birthday. The hostess and hosts were extremely nice and gave my husband and I a fantastic table /view right on the water. Our waiter was excellent, very informative and did not rush us. I was extremely impressed with the staff overall and the food was delightful! I will return.
We had a delightful Christmas Day meal! At first we were seated in the lounge-I was disappointed because I’d made reservations weeks ago & had hoped for a window seat. When I asked at the host station, they quickly moved us & we had a great table with a super view of the sunset. Our server Victor was great! Some of the other waitstaff are a little goofy but it doesn’t ruin the experience.
We were there on Christmas Day.
The menu was the dinner menu all day .....no lunch or brunch items.
But, the reason we keep coming back is the view. Sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Oakland Bay Bridge.
Food is o.k. Nothing outstanding, but adequate.,,there is room for improvement.
Previous visits the service was great......but our server this trip acted like she really didn't want to there. Never a smile.
We will probably return simply because my sister like it. But, food and presentation need work.
OK - so it was Christmas Eve - the menu was very limited but the stand out for the evening was the service - attentive, respectful and courteous - the limited menu choices neglected to include a vegetarian option. Even when they called me to confirm our reservation, and I double-checked on the vegetarian dishes, I was assured that there would be plenty to choose from. When I asked the server about it, as there was nothing on the menu but a salad and one sushi choice, he hemmed and hawed a bit and then told that "they can make some vegetables over pasta in a red or cream sauce." I opted for the vegetable sushi as an entree - menu stated 8 pieces - what came was a lovely presentation of 4 larger pieces but it tasted like it had been made the day before...but as I mentioned, it was Christmas Eve...better planning on the part of Skates would have made it a lovely evening...thank goodness I loved the people I was with!
Christmas Eve dinner. We were initially seated in the back room with a view of the kitchen and the large tv that was set up to be a fireplace. We asked to be reseated with a real view. Although the place was packed they were able to accommodate. The server was very nice and made good recommendations. Two of ordered the salmon and were told is to be prepared rare, which is perfect! However both were very over cooked. My husband ordered the pork chop. The sauce was delish but the meat required a steak knife. None of us ate our entire meal. The ambiance was great but the food...eh.
We went there for dinner to celebrate Christmas eve we were sat promptly. Unfortunately our server didn't come back for long periods of time we were left without drink dirty dishes on the table from our appetizers and we had to flag her down in order to get another glass of wine. The food for the price point doesn't add up I thought it was subpar my husband and our two adult children felt the same way the location is very nice and the setting. But for the price point and scale of the restaurant there are many other Seafood options out there
Reservation: Arrived and checked in - they didn't seem to know we had a reservation - which we had made weeks prior to Christmas Eve. Finally got sort of waived off into this area usually for large groups with a sort of dismissive air of - well you probably are just saying you have a reservation but you don't.
Seating: My open table notes say, 'please no tables in the middle of the room and prefer a booth'. So.... where did we sit? Smack in the middle of the room, closest table to the door so cold draft all through dinner - there were many, many other table options they did not chose to give us most likely because they didn't think we had a reservation.
View - couldn't see a thing because they had so many cheesy icicle lights hanging everywhere inside that the glare against the window didn't allow for the view of the SF city lights across the bay.
Food - Enjoyed the grilled romaine/ caesar salad very much. Lobster bisque was a large bowl of thick goo. Not at all a bisque - maybe a chowder? either way enough volume for 4 people. Ridiculous. Calamari appetizer was good. Companion meals were ok, not great. Focaccia bread was delicious.
Service - ordered appetizer and food at the same time. Assuming a restaurant of this level would stagger without having to be told - oops - nope. App came quickly, piled on by soup, salad and entrees all at the same time. Like being bombarded. 3 servers all at once and then standing there staring at us like we would be able to magically create enough room on our table for everything at once.
Honestly - for a restaurant of this caliber and price - I wouldn't come again and don't recommend you do either. Wanted a special Christmas Eve dinner, we knew would be a splurge - it was an overpriced disappointment.
Disappointing main course, steak was well done then second round was rare. Could not hit medium with two attempts. We were offered dessert knowing we were not ordering anything else.
Upholstered seats were all stained, carpet dirty but their beautiful view keeps bringing us back. Next time only appetizers, skip the entree!
We just returned from dining at Skates for Christmas Eve dinner. Our waitress, Antwanette, was fabulous, attentive, polite, and courteous. Our table was right in the corner with a great view of the bay - the perfect spot for four good friends. (I had requested a table by the window and so pleased that we were able to be accommodated). We started with drinks, then salads, then entrees, and followed with ONE dessert. We were far too full to eat more! Everything was delicious. The prime rib was incredible and cooked perfectly. The New York steak was again perfect, and the salmon was just right. We split a Key Lime pie which was also quite tasty. Loved every minute of our dining experience - especially the food and location. Yes. A special evening and a special location. Thank you.
Of course the views are spectacular so I wanted to get that part out of the way first.
This was my first time here and was here for lunch. Amber was our server and she was perfect. I was meeting a friend that I hadn't seen in a while and she knew the exact right amount of service that we wanted. She was friendly and bubbly and knowledgeable of the menu.
We ended up both ordering the lobster bisque and shared a plate of sushi. The bisque was very flavorful with big chunks of lobster. The sushi was delicious and the presentation was amazing. I'm always nervous to order raw fish from a place I've never been but it was so good.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for good food and friendly service.
