Skates on the Bay Ratings and Reviews
Had a great meal. Celebrating my daughters birthday. Only one thing we regret. My mother, who loved her shrimp and crab fettuccine never saw her food again after asking for it to be boxed to go. No worries I'll just take her back the next time she has a craving.
Well the restaurant is always great.
But the last two times my wife and
I have been there. The short ribs were
Really salty. This time my pork chop
Was very salty. We aren’t use to much
Salt. I hope they change the salt on
The food. Because we love coming there.

We were there for a joint birthday celebration. The crab & artichoke dip was so much better than I would have ever imagine...chunky and delicious and with copious amounts of their wonderful bread. We both had the scallops, which were extraordinary. I dare say the best I'd ever had. That night they were served with a spatzle, kale, and something else sauté...really delicious. Crème brulee for dessert was so creamy I never wanted it to end. We were both delighted with the whole meal. I want to go back this week!
Had a great table by the window and the food and drinks were excellent. However, our waiter was MIA. We told him in the beginning we weren’t ready to order yet but he sure did give us a lot of time to ourselves. This restaurant means a lot to me because I met my husband her 24 years ago.
Overall not good, despite the great view. Several of us ordered the open face crab sandwich, which turned out to be just a crab melt - the menu description is very misleading. One of us suffered a stomach upset after eating such a very greasy "crab" sandwich. The clam chowder was tasteless, and to make matters worse I discovered after the leaving that I was charged $7 for added bacon, which was billed as included on the menu. Service was OK. Restaurant was over air-conditioned, so our party had to move to another part of the room. Vastly overpriced, so we made sure we ate as much as we could, despite the disagreeable food.
We appreciated the creativity of the menu and enjoyed the flavors of our dishes. The view from the windows was excellent. We even saw longboat rowers go right by our window. We had one issue: the coffee and tea we’re not piping hot and several of our dishes were not super hot either. if a microwave has been nearby I would’ve zapped my dish for at least another minute! We were surprised at the uniformity of under heated food.
I had the Steelhead with Risotto cakes and Brussels sprouts. It was great. My husband enjoyed his sea bass. The waiter was prompt and helpful. The view was gorgeous. We had a great sunset. I wish the wine by the glass selection was a little better. I’ve been to Skates about a half dozen times and have enjoyed every visit.
Skates has become the go-to place for an annual cousin reunion. The location on the bay, the sounds of the waves as you walk over the bridge to the restaurant, the views, service, margaritas, and food are always excellent. On this visit we split the grilled romaine as a starter. For entrees we went with the specials of salmon with squash polenta cakes and the sea bass with mushrooms. Scrumptious! Both washed down with a margarita, great conversation, and a server named Nancy who was absolutely wonderful. Can’t wait to return for another visit.
We're locals but we hadn't been to Skates in many years. I don't know why though I'm sure one reason would be that on Fri and Sat Skates used to be incredibly busy. We went on Monday night and it was a pleasure. The food was of much higher quality than we remembered. Pacific oysters; ahi poke for appetizers; steelhead (grilled), kalbi ribs, prime rib, seafood louie for mains. Everyone was pleased. We had a full range of drinkables (one beer drinker; one cocktail drinker; one wine drinker (a very good Santa Barbara county Pinot); one teetotaler) and all were satisfied.
Add to this a very competent and friendly waitperson and the evening was more than satisfactory.
I have always had a great experience at Skates, and this experience was no exception! We were seated within 5 minutes of arriving, and our server was above and beyond. She gave us helpful recommendations and was fun to talk to when she came by with food or refilled our waters. Would definitely recommend!
We were at Skates for the first time the previous Friday and loved it. We liked it so much, we took friends visiting from outside the Bay Area and they loved it like we did. Everything was great. The food would be good anywhere, but that view makes it even better.
All of the seafood was fresh.... lobster roll was outstanding and big. However, there was very little creativity. I have seen it all before and it was a little humdrum. Service was friendly but a little slow. Especially in clearing the appetizer plates. The view was spectacular from every seat.... cocktails were well made and after lunch the weather was great and you can walk along the bay. Overall solid and I will be back
Went to Skates for brunch on Sunday with a group of friends. Service was great and food was alright but not what we had hoped for. In previous visits was better food.
It is always a beautiful view and even more so that day it was a clear day.
Crab dip was great salads were good but special sandwich with prime rib was just alright.
Will still be back!
Had a great anniversary experience at Skates. Service was attentive and she provided enough information about specials, tastes, wines, etc.
Crab and artichoke dish was very good, bread was warm and soft. Enough for 4 people for a light appetizer.
Crab and prawn fettuccine was extremely good, heaping portions of real crab and large prawns.
Steak and prawn surf and turf was also very good, cooked perfectly. Could have had more veggies (asparagus spears), but still a large and filling meal.
Skates was ok. The 'Lime Pie' dessert along with the service was hands down on point. The salad was not crisp or fresh as I expected. My prime rib was good and tender. The mash potatoes were satisfying, but not tasty. Check it out for yourself. You might like it.
Picked Skates because of it's location. Sunset was the most beautiful time! With a seat by the window, you can see all the way across San Francisco Bay to the Golden Gate and SF. Beautiful! Great food and very good service. Will go back again and again. Oh,and they have lots and lots of free parking.
Skates has been around a long time but I had never tried it even when I lived in Berkeley for 5 years. The view is beautiful of course. Food was surprisingly decent. Not 5 star but good enough where you are enjoying food with the phenomenal view. Sometimes restaurants on the water serve barely edible food but can get away with it for the view. Food was fresh, lots of seasonal/local specials (especially seafood), and our waiter was great.
Not good. Terrible service. Kind of obvious that the waiter was having a bad day but that doesn’t give him the right to treat us rudely. I was hosting a guest and his wife that evening. Not coming back to this place. It doesn’t matter if the food is great as well as the ambience. Execution to the end is key.
