Better than average food with good water views. Ordered mahi mahi special and prepared welll.
Celebrated my birthday there and was not disappointed. The bar was packed and couldn’t get a drink but once our table was ready, the service made up for it. Raw bar is a must! Wait staff was friendly and efficient! Great experience! Will definitely return.
We went to skates on the bay for the first time and saw how amazing the view out the window was, we enjoyed it and we loved the foods they were so delicious!! The service was amazing as well. We will be back next time for sure! Highly recommend! :)
Not as good as in recent years. Was disappointed with the service. Our waiter was nice, however the timeliness of the delivery of food was quite slow. The taste of things less than I've experienced there before. I had shrimp and grits was not seasoned well. Seafood Louie was very bland
Very good location at the Berkeley Marina; we came here for a birthday +graduation celebration; enjoyed a wonderful dinner with a nice night view of the waterfront and the Bay Bridge.
Service was excellent and we decided to sign up for their points because we definitely will come back!
We ordered a SEAFOOD LOUIE, Seafood cioppino, King Salmon and
I'd recommend to go there earlier before the dusk so you can have a better view.
great view on the bay, service pretty good, food mediocre - the main reason to go there is for the view
We had a pleasant reunion with old friends. The service was exceptional and the menu, as always, was interesting for all of us. The view can’t be beat. I had to wait for a few minutes before my table was ready and everyone involved was most pleasant. All in all, it was the usual great experience.
Skates is not what it used to be. I have been going to Skates almost since its inception and have been through all the changes in management and chefs. It now has the feel of a tourist trap.
Start with the basics: the menu used to be an elegant document in a faux-leather binder. You now get two wrinkled/tattered laminated sheets- one for specials and another the regular menu. A lot of the great dishes from the past are no longer available, and they have tried to become a one stop shop of seafood, sushi, and meats. Some prices now match those of a "luxury" restaurant, which it is not.
The night I went I ordered the pork loin, which in reality was a gigantic pork chop with a huge bone sticking out of the plate. It came with a cab sauvignon sauce, vegetables and mashed potatoes. The entire plate was so over-salted that I could only eat the center part of the chop. Everything else I left.
I was so disappointed I apologized to my friend which had come from out of town to visit.
Service was excellent and wonderful, so nice that I didn't want to complain about my food.
I will no longer return to Skates for dinner, but I may continue to visit the bar for drinks, appetizers and a beautiful sunset.
Had a nice corner window table. great service. Started with oysters, followed be two sashimi. Unusual sashimi with fish and carrots. Had crab Louis salads. The amount of crab was small.
The service was good. Overall restaurant looks more worn than in the past year.
Gentleman’s food came out before the ladies’. As a result, of the 10 minute delay, gentleman’s food was cold.
Started well. We had three different servers. Never told why or introduced to any of them. Sat without assistance an unreasonable amount of time between courses.
My tomahawk pork chop was considerably over cooked.
Rocky chicken pretty good. Sirloin steak. Flavorless.
Hamburger. Ok. Not the best dining experience we’ve had there.
I think our waitress was new. She had to look at the menu when we ordered. Service was slow because she kept forgetting us. We saw her look at us and react like she forgot to place our drink order. My wife’s gin and tonic tasted like the tonic was off tasting. Food was excellent once we got to order. We told her we were ready to order we she brought out the appetizer. She said ok and walked off. We saw her pass our table 3 times before she came back to take our order.
We had a window table and the guests were very impressed by the view of the three bridges, San Francisco and Mt. Tam. It's a great place to celebrate a special occasion.
We were seated promptly, and greeted. We knew what we wanted, we ordered our meal and appetizers and requested that they be served together. They were not served together. Drinks were forgotten. Some appetizers (soup) were sent almost immediately, and it was at least 15 minutes before the last "appetizer" (which we requested to have served with our meal) was served. The waitress came by several times, and as we requested things she would bring one out of the 5 things we requested. Desserts were served without removing the fish dishes etc that were left from lunch. How can you mess up a Burnt Creme, or Creme Brulee? I don't know but Skates managed it. The crust had NOT been heated, so basically it was crunchy cold sugar on top of the pudding. We had a party of 8 which doesn't seem too unmanageable, and we didn't have numerous special requests. We were in the restaurant early, and it wasn't very crowded, so there didn't seem to be a reason for the irregular service. If the tip hadn't been automatically added to the bill I would have given much less than 18%.
The best thing about Skate's is the view. I hadn't been here for a few years; we usually go to Kincaid's or Horatio's. The food simply isn't as good as the other locations, although it it priced the same. The goat cheese salad was dripping in a fairly tasteless dressing, and the steelhead and vegetables were drowning in the lemon butter sauce. Our waiter was very nice and the atmosphere is nice. But the food is a throwback to the 90s, when people were first beginning to learn about great cooking.
Everything was great as usual. The food was up to its excellent standards. We had a birthday and besides the great window table, everyone wished a happy birthday. Service good and we like the fact that if another server is going by the would stop and clear dishes and bring our requests.
I took my staff to Skates to express my appreciation for their hard work and dedication. Everyone thought the food and service were excellent. I requested a window table when I made the reservation. Maybe because I am an OpenTable VIP, we were seated at the corner table with a spectacular view of the Bay and San Francisco. Kudos to Skates!
Wouldnt come back
The view is THE best for East Bay dinning. The food is not as nice as the view, however the overall experience leaves me wanting to return. I noticed as I was being seated, the place could use updating.
The best view in the Bay Area!
People are fast and efficient.
Try the Bloody Mary bar with all the accompaniments you can imagine from bacon to olives.
The food was good. I had been there before and asked for a window seat overlooking the bay and the west bay but did not get it. They were very busy but we were acknowledged within 15 minutes. The place was the noisiest of the restaurants I've frequented.
Family afternoon out. We like the brunch and lunch menu. Everyone enjoys the atmosphere and the menu. The view can not be beat.
Some of our food was good, but the prime rib was overcooked and tough. I was surprised - typically skates does a good job. This was a truly disappointing meal.
Great place..Great food...great views would definitely come back here...Great sunset.
Our very favorite Bay Area Restaurant!
From the hostess to the bill!
Service is superb! The wait staff is knowledgeable, accommodating, and friendly as well as attentive!
Our favorite dishes are expanding and equally sublime! A true dining experience. A delicious Joy!
We had a wonderful time. I highly recommend the crab dip appetizer. My husband loved the clam chowder. The caramel corn ice cream was exceptional. We will definitely go back.
Had a family gathering which was very nice. 2 out of 10 Otis sent their dinners back as it was over cooked and cold veggies and potatoes. They did bring something else but still not good. For the price the food should be a lot better.
Great service, my waitress was ON IT. Food came out looking aesthetically gorgeous and tasted amazing. The view from my table was STUNNING. Nothing better then being on a date having great food overlooking the bay at sunset. Highly recommend!
Waitress seemed put off. My guests were African American and wondered if she had an issue with them. She was very slow to take a drink order. So slow that the barmaid noticed and came and took the order. Then she was slow to get our order for starters. One of our party was not ready to order a main yet so we didn’t get an order in until the starters were almost out. Despite that she brought out the main entries for two of us before we were close to finishing the starters. But she didn’t bring the third persons dish out for another twenty minutes. We waited for her food before eating so our plates were stone cold by the time they brought her food. The food was really good if it had been warm. No apologies, nothing from the waitress. I would go back but would insist on a different waitress.
As always a great meal and expertise and experience staff in and out of kitchen.
The Hamachi poke was really good but personally I was not impressed w/clam chowder. It needed bacon or another pork product (absent) not the green pepper. I had the Petite Louis (crab & shrimp) and it came with a large piece of plain salmon on top. Surprise. I sent the salmon home with a friend whose daughter loves salmon. The driver scallops on the specials list was apparently terrific + great sauce. The Mahi Mahi was also delicious and my friend asked for and got some wonderful au gratin potatoes instead of the mushroom risotto it originally came with. We split a rather plain bread pudding w/tons of caramel sauce on top and a lot of sauce swimming all around it. Sauce was homemade and great but the bread pudding needed fruit and spices. Window table was wonderful as was the excellent service. Good Tropical Mojitos to start.
We made reservations for our Sunday brunch. We arrived on time and were seated timely The crowd was noisy, the cleanliness of the floors was poor , and our server wasn’t friendly. We were hoping for a more enjoyable experience since we have brunch after church weekly. I guess management needs to evaluate what’s being done well and seek ways to improve ...
The view is beautiful! Very happy with the place. My husband requested a nice table by the window and they accommodated us very nicely!
As usual the food, view, and ambiance was good. But our server was not very engaged, she would ignore questions, mishear orders, and seemed to want to be somewhere else. It started feeling like we were being punk’d. We ended up thinking it was very funny, but it was pretty weird for a Skates experience.
Waitperson must have been having a bad day, she had zero warmth and got the order wrong. When we asked for anything she acted put out. Very rude. The food was overpriced and tolerable at best. ONLY redeeming quality was the view.
Quality food, fresh, get a window seat and enjoy the water views.
I came to the restaurant for my birthday. The food was very bland and I was disappointed especially because the prices were so high. I had the Oscar plate and the steak tasted like they just put it on the grill with no seasoning. The sauce wasn't seasoned the Asparagus wasn't seasoned. The potatoes were the only thing seasoned. I wouldn't come back again.
Great setting and beautiful view of the Bay. Went there for lunch on the weekend. The food was not to my expectations. And the service was mediocre.
Have been to Skates many times, and wonder why I decide to return. This most recent visit was very disappointing. Staff person was initially indifferent, "warmed up a bit" then went to the indifferent phase of our service. What my guests ordered was not what was served. Decided not to question, as we will never return!
I've been many times and always find the food consistently great and the people friendly and accommodating. The views of the bay are terrific. I have absolutely no complaints.
