Skates on the Bay Ratings and Reviews
Had a chance to dine at Skates on the Bay during Restaurant Week. Food was good -- I found the flavors a bit one-dimensional, but the meal was great value nonetheless. We got a table by the window, awesome view and great service. Would recommend for special occasions.
Your restaurant has been a favorite for us in last few years. You are so special. We drove from Sacramento to dine in your restaurant for our 28th Anniversary. Your management and hosts are the best. We were greeted by your hosts with Happy Anniversary wishes. In past, your servers were perfect. This Saturday evening was not up to your standards. I was hoping our server would greet us too with warm wishes. I hopefully a more special dining experience.
We are a little disappointed, but we will return. Your cuisine is excellent.
When the weather is right this location has views that are outstanding. We watched a beautiful sunset over the top of the Golden Gate Bridge. From the windows you can see the Bay bridge, downtown SF and the Golden gate bridge. Perfect views. Very romantic. Food was also very good. Scallops cooked perfect! Kung pao calamari was awesome. Ahi tuna had great flavor. Would go again!
15 years ago we moved to the Walnut Creek area from Alameda. Until then, we ate there once or twice a year for a treat - food was above average and ample quantities - not this time. Plates were barely warm, and no, there was no crown at 5 pm Tuesday. We may return for a drink, but unlikely anything else.
My overall experience was excellent. the food once the order was made came in good time and was hot and fresh. The menu is somewhat limited but the food is tasty enough with what they offer. Would recommend brunch, lunch and early dinner if planning on enjoying the ocean view. Darkness does nothing for it.
Open Table was great at finding us a table! The restaurant was recommended by a friend, so my expectations were up. At first our server was quite attentive with recommendations and offerings. We ordered a bottle of wine and their fabulous focaccia bread to start. The wine came, the bread never did...we had to wave her down to get attention. Someone else brought our dinner and my steak and praws (which I splurged on because it was my husband's birthday) were cold and over-cooked. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to spoil the birthday by complaining...but since our server forgot about us, I never really got the chance to anyway. My husband got the salmon (his favorite) and it too was over-cooked. All in all, we made the best of it and enjoyed the rest of the evening. Upon arriving at the restaurant, we saw a sign saying don't leave valuables in your car. I thought nothing of it really until we left (I never do that anyway). As we were walking to our car, we saw several parking spots with broken glass in them. Our car was fine, but now I more fully understand the sign! I will not go back to this restaurant even though the view is great.
We really enjoyed taking our family of 6 to Skates on the Bay to celebrate a family milestone. Our kids are between 11 and 19 years old and all found food they enjoyed. The restaurant was pretty expensive, but not unreasonable for such a nice restaurant with amazing views of the SF Bay.
Ambiance and service was really good. I was disappointed in the food .overuse of onions in dishes where I felt they didn't belong . Also we ordered a fruit cup and the portion was minuscule . Poke had too much lettuce, not enough fish.
Also, coffee was not of the best quality .
We've been going to Skates for many years. We always enjoy ourselves.
I have been disappointed with their dessert menu, though, and wish they'd bring back some of my favorites. Two stand out to me. First of all they used to have a creme brulee trio. One regular, one coconut, and one chocolate. It was always such a treat and kept me coming back. The other dessert I really loved was the bowl of three different flavored scoops of sorbet. The flavors varied and were always so fresh. Perhaps they even made them? What a delight. Most of the desserts now are just one serving of one thing which yes, are tasty, but a little boring.
Thanks for asking for my input. We'll be back for sure.
Service was poor in many ways. Quality of food was mediocre at best. Location is great but nighttime view was masked by bright decorative lights. All of these comments are magnified in light of prices that are on per with or above those charged by the really fine restaurants in this area.
We had a very delightful time and it was an excellent choice for a New Year's Day dining experience. The view was supreme and the service very attentive and friendly. We all enjoyed our Seafood Tower appetizer and individual Entrees that were well-cooked and presented. I would recommend Skates for a very nice family dinner or dinner with friends, especially nice for a special occasion!
Unfortunately this was not a good experience. Even after having reservations it still took about 10-15 minutes to seat us. Once seated and orders placed it took close to 40 minutes to be served. Once the food came it was Luke warm at best.
This was our first time to this restaurant. We were able to easily get a reservation for New Year's Eve. It is out in the Bay off of Berkeley, right over the water on a pier with a great view of SF and the GG bridge. Friendly greeting and staff and a pretty good seafood selection. Lobster bisque was tasty but, as is too often the case in a lot of restaurants, way too salty. Why do they do that?
Only 2 oyster selections: Pacific and Humbolt Kumamotos. Luckily, our alert waitperson let us know the Kumamotos were $31.00 per 1/2 dozen! We stuck with the Pacific oysters ($16 per 1/2 dozen), which were fine. The vinagrette with the oysters was, unfortunately way too sweet, almost inedible. The scallops were perfectly cooked and delicious but the haricot vert served with them were almost raw. My sea bass was cooked medium rare but strangely, it was a little tough. The New York Strip steak of one our party's choosing was very good. He had the surf and turf - only complaint: there were very few shrimp on this steak and shrimp combo. Only other thing: the restrooms could stand a remodel/upgrade. I would go back again, though.
We went for New Years Eve and the food was delicious! We ordered the following: Bibb lettuce salad, NY strip and prawns dish and the BBQ prawns with cheddar cheese grits. Best grits I've had in California. The ambience was very nice and although it was night time, the view of the city was spectacular. The view must be perfect during the day. I would highly recommend Skates.
