Skates on the Bay
This beautiful and historic waterfront gathering place for fresh seafood and unmatched views of the San Francisco Bay, recently completed (April, 2012) a major interior design renovation, including the addition of a new raw bar, glass-walled private dining room and innovative menus. Originally opened in 1983 in the Berkeley Marina, the reimagined Skates on the Bay is a stunning restaurant to enjoy cocktails at sunset, late night Happy Hour, weekday lunch, weekend lunch or brunch with the family or dinner with a date any time of year.

We love skates and have been there with friends before. Will definitely try it again, but service was slow. Waiter was very nice, but there was a pro at event going on which seemed to pull a lot of the staff away. They were very few actually working on the restaurant floor which made things take a while. For example one of the people in our group ordered a Mimosa and it took 30 minutes for it to arrive. We normally love the food at skates and it was good, but it was not hot when it arrived at the table. It was kind of lukewarm.
We had not been in Berkeley, Ca in several years but returned and had dinner at Skates on the Bay, a long time favorite. It did not disappoint. The fish dishes were imaginative and very good. The service was good. We will return.
even though the dining room was empty, the front desk refused to seat us on the grounds that she did not want to "stress out" the server. the point of Skates was mainly the view, which would be seen while waiting versus standing in the dark lobby. The food used to be decent, especially the famous key lime pie. The server forgot the requested butter for the focaccia, the clam chowder was all potato, the chicken was dry, the key lime pie was a sad imposter of former glory. I can only surmise that Skates has been sold to an MBA and he doesn't realize that you need a chef to charge $100. Very disappointing! Especially since we have been long time customers and were looking forward to another enjoyable experience. Too bad!
Always will love & appreciate Skates❗
Great food, service and ambiance. Would highly recommend.
I always enjoy the food at Skates. However, the Fantasy Chocolate Cheesecake "took the cake!" Taste and presentation were excellent.
Jesse the server was excellent. Of course was the view is spectacular !
The food was quite good.
The music was loud , the system poor and the choice completely not in keeping with the beauty.
Soft Jazz would fit!
Really needs attention.
A friend and I met for lunch on Saturday to celebrate our birthdays. I had the Seafood Louie. Ample amount of crab meat with a few small fillets of Salmon and a few poached jumbo shrimp. All in all, very nice, filling salad, but a bit pricey at $29.00. My friend had the seabass. Again, very good food, but a bit pricey at $29.00. You will definitely pay for the view. The waitress was very nice and attentive, and asked if we were celebrating anything special. The free birthday dessert for two of creme brulee with a side of whipped cream and fresh berries was delightful.
Four of us had a delightful lunch at Skates. Prompt seating at the window with great view of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. We elected four different courses. Two fish dishes, served excellent preparations. The Crab Lewis salad was excellent and the crab roll with some great potato chips, which were excellent. Our observation is that Skates has been remodeled inside, painted outside and as a result much improved experience. But, perhaps more important the quality of the food has been continuously improved over the past couple of years. We rate Skates as one of the superb restaurant destinations in the East Bay.
Food was amazing as usual. Service was pretty good, although sometimes it was quite a long stint in between when we swee or waitress despite the restaurant being pretty slow. The complementary creme brulee they brought my sister for her birthday was outstanding as usual. Skates rarely disappoints
Had the seafood pasta. Crab was over cooked and very hard. Garlic was burned and black. Very very bitter and fishy tasting. Bread was very salty. Maybe it was just an off night for the kitchen, as several other tables complained and returned their food. But our server was exceptional- very attentive and accommodating. For his service, I’ll try again in hopes of a better turnout for the kitchen
I make a reservation for 4, the receptionist told the server to put us on a table that we need to struggle throughout on our lunch , the table is good for only 2 and our dishes came without having enough room. The receptionist did not do a good job when arranging table especially there’s so many empty tables and we were squeeze in between 2 tables. Bad experience on the seating arrangement that discourage me from coming back again.
Had an enjoyable meal here.
Service was great and we were never rushed which I appreciate.
The service was outstanding as was the food. Some unique twists to the dishes offered.
Go to place for catching up with friends
I almost don't want to encourage people to go here, it was so good I don't want a crowd to ruin it. Fantastic view across the bay and great walking area along the shore are the high point here. We had one of each main of Salmon with veggies that both delivered a very good rating. Our server was young but worked hard and got almost everything right. Disappointed to find lipstick on a couple of our glasses. But it was easy to overlook this shortcoming because in the end we spent several fine hours enjoying the meal, a walk along the shore and then back for a fireside chat. The facilities are a bit rough around the edges, but hey, it was a memorable first class shore experience.
Outstanding service and the food has always been exceptional.
The food was nasty I would never go back. The only thing I enjoy was the view and and the salad.
Surprisingly good - setting, food and service. I would definitely recommend a visit to Skates
Great selection of various seafood dishes. Beautiful sunset over SF. Nice place to eat.
I love the relaxed feel of this place – like a comfortable dining room in a friends home. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The artichoke dip was amazing and the Bibb lettuce salad was refreshing. Service was well-timed and friendly.
Outstanding location, service and food. Super restaurant!
It was New Years Day and my wife's Birthday and the whole family in tow, 5 total. We were seated in the middle of the floor while open tables lined the windows and then promptly ignored for 20mins until I went and told someone. A couple was sat at the window table for six behind us and delivered ice waters upon seating so I tracked down the waiter to make a similar appeal, for waters.
With a deep breath I figured a cold brew with my Mussels would help ease the tension, until I found out there were absolutely no beers left on draught. Seriously. Absolutely nothing.
Apologetic and attempting to calm us our server saw that our appetizers would be covered by the house and the rest of the meal completed smoothly enough. Even a creme brulee with candle for the Wife, nice touch.
The service and food are always excellent. We live in SF, and love the fact that Skates has parking! Definitely worth crossing the bridge for.
Great food, great customer service. A must place to go.
My wife had scallops and said them to be yummy but had sand in them. I had the Cioppino and found it to be one of the best. Service was diligent. This was our first time at Skates and all I can say is that this place is wayyyyy too expensive[$58.00 for 12 Kalamatas?]. But, yes, there's 'the view'. Anyway, many better options for the money in the bay area.
We ordered scallops but they were not hot when served. It was New Year's eve and restaurant
was busy so we didn't say anything.
Been coming to Skates for years. Never disappointed for lunch or dinner. Great place to take visiting friends and family at the end of the day from a visit to the city.
Not the excellent dining experience that it was 10 years ago, it has sunk into mediocrity...and clean your out of order bathrooms for goodness sake!!!
The service, the food and the ambience were all outstanding. Very relaxing to look out at the bay and see the sailboats quietly sliding by.
It was Good.
On the water, very nice. Food was good, service was horrible. They had a wedding in one of the private rooms, the rest of the restaurant was virtually empty. Service and wait staff walking about, took forever to get our drinks, our food, everything. When my husband mentioned the poor service, the waiter made excuses, we will not return to this establishment
I had the bacon cheeseburger, it was awesome. I love the keylime pie as well!
We were very disappointed with our meal here. First, we had a reservation (the place was almost empty - there were only 5 tables taken) and we had to wait 25 minutes for a table. Then, we never had a waiter or waitress come to our table. Finally, a server from the bar noticed us and came over to help. After that, we again, never really had a server and kept having to flag down different people as they passed by. The food was really disappointing for the price. My braised short ribs were tough and chewy, and not tender at all. My son's filet mignon tasted burnt. And, my husband's prime rib was pretty bad too. Maybe the fish is better here. But, definitely avoid the steak. I did enjoy my cocktail in the bar (while waiting for our table).
I brought my Dad to Skates for his 89th birthday. The service and food was GREAT! Pamela was a fantastic server! The staff went out of their way to wish him a Happy Birthday. He' still talking about it!
Our waiter, Abe, was polite and helpful in making our selection and delivering the food and drinks. He advised that the pomegranate vodk martini was a good selection. He also carefully explained the desserts
Plenty of time and space to have a relaxed, extended holiday dinner.
My husband and I go here every Christmas dinner. We’ve been coming for 6 years in a row. This year was very off. The waitress rushed us. She didn’t really give us much time to enjoy each other. I know they were busy, but it was silly. She tried to take our food without us being finished, and brought us our check as we ordered desert. The lobster
Was rubbery and tasteless. The warm crab and artichoke dip was very runny.
I guess 6 years was a good run. We will be looking for a new restaurant to visit on Christmas next year. It did not feel like a welcoming experience. Very disappointed.
The view (sunset) was fantastic and the food was really good.
Unfortunately I feel like it was understaffed for Christmas day. No fault of our waitress who was wonderful but she was very busy.
We never seemed to have enough to drink and head to The bar to have refills of water and soda .
However I do appreciate them being open on Christmas day
Christmas afternoon. Perfect view. Quiet enough for conversation. Just the two of us celebrating our engagement 51 years ago.
