Skates on the Bay
This beautiful and historic waterfront gathering place for fresh seafood and unmatched views of the San Francisco Bay, recently completed (April, 2012) a major interior design renovation, including the addition of a new raw bar, glass-walled private dining room and innovative menus. Originally opened in 1983 in the Berkeley Marina, the reimagined Skates on the Bay is a stunning restaurant to enjoy cocktails at sunset, late night Happy Hour, weekday lunch, weekend lunch or brunch with the family or dinner with a date any time of year.
The service here is very poor, we waited for about 15 before anyone came to take our order, then another 30 for our drinks which were beer & wine. We tried to order entree’s after our appetizer, but after another 30 minutes we had to ask where it was only to discover our order had not been placed. We just asked for the check at this point. I’ve been going to this restaurant for years and the last 2 times the service has been horrible. Not sure what’s going on but I’m hopeful it will change.
Excellent view if the city and Golden Gate Bridge. Great service. Pleasant experience. Food was good.
Beautiful location and wonderful meal to cap off my birthday weekend.
Went here for my 40th birthday and the service was impeccable. I put a request for a window seat and they accommodated with a beautiful table with a view of the Bay. They even remembered to sing happy birthday to me and provided a deeeelush custard.
Gorgeous view of the bay. Oysters were amazing and the drinks were great. The best drink was the Tropical Mojito. It was so amazing we got a second one. The waiter was super nice. We then watched the sunset from the walk path around the marina. Amazing night.
We had great brunch and celebrated my wife birthday. The staff was attentive and provided creame brûlée’s for birthday gal. We were seated at corner table with views of both Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. We would recommend both food and ambience excellent.
Beautiful place, beautiful view, food is decent, a little pricey, but the view makes up for it. Love that place!
Great views, food yummy but we were seated close to a door near bathrooms and the smell from the air freshener wafted to our table several times. We finally asked to be moved. Also they cranked the air conditioning and people everywhere were trying to warm up. So ambiance is really my only negative.
The bill paying took one hour because of mixed up charges. Free Key lime special for pi days March 11-15 was a hassle. And use of our points resulted in our paying $3. Fortunately for me, I had to leave for an appointment and left my husband to deal with the hassle.
Jacob was a terrific server - very knowledgeable and helpful about the menu - and flexible about our special requests.
All staff pleasant and respectful. Our waiter, Jacob, amazing, attentive to our requests. Including a complimentary Birthday dessert of creme brulee! Clam chowder superb! Coho Salmon delicious, fish & chips with a substitution scrumptious. We're very appreciative of everyone's attention. Thank you!
Love the setting. Food was outstanding. Our service at table was slow and had to ask several times for items
always enjoyed going to Skates, great service, food and location
we we in the corner table in the bar, but unfortunately, it was pretty cold sitting there. our waiter took quite awhile getting to me since i came later. food was good, but way expensive.
This is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. It’s just one of those places where you feel completely relaxed when you come and food it always amazing. My favorite dish is the pork belly appetizer, best pork belly I ever had!
Great view, great service, great food! Ahi Poke and Sushi appetizers were great, drink selection was awesome. Clam chowder and Ahi Tuna special was delicious...
The view is fantastic and the food as mediocre as imaginable
There was only tab water ( never happened to me saying that the previous night they had s big party) ; the fush was not fresh and slmost uneatable
Bit with the view of sanfrancisco you can atill enjoytheconversation with yourfriends
The clam chowder was a bit weird and three items I had where sprinkled with some sort of Granola topping - overkill on that. You go here for the view I guess, maybe not so much for the food. How sad though to fall so short on that part!
Skate is a hidden gem in Berkeley! The menu is perfectly sized, the value is hard to come by and the food was tasty and enjoyable. Highly recommend Skates!
With the Open Table reservation, we were seated by a window. And it was a lovely sky with storm clouds and sun and with sailboats and birds on the Bay.
Inventive cocktails. Good choices from the Raw Bar. Good choices for the seafood specialties.
And we always finish the meal by sharing a caramel corn sundae.
The food was absolutely amazing! My husband and I would definitely return for another date night.
Everything was great but the meal. I usually don’t complain but the waygy
Beautiful setting, wonderful view! Food and service were disappointing. We were a party of 7 the server didn't get the order right on three occasions, 1 drink and 2 entrees. The food was marginal especially for the price, e.g. seafood in salad didn't taste fresh, shrimp rubbery & crab watery.
Would not be inclined to come here for special occasion, more likely a drink and the view.
This is not the Skates I remember.
Two generations of family found the food to our liking. The service was great. It was too noisy to have a normal family conversation.
Absolutely LOVE the place, so romantic and the food is always exceptional!! Wait staff are friendly and I love that they provide suggestions.
We thoroughly enjoyed the food and drinks. The sea bass and cioppino were great and cooked to perfection and the lemon drop martinis were delish. We also appreciated the helpful and friendly service.
Our only recommendation would be to have small candles on the dining tables as it gets a little dark in the restaurant once the sun sets.
This was an excellent late lunch with a friend. Our waiter was superb, very responsive and helpful, and caring. Our food was prepared superbly. I tried a lobster bisque, and it was superb. A pastry shell in the middle with solid small pieces of lobster. It was so good that I told the waiter to tell the chef how highly I thought about it. As the main courses were delivered our waiter brought for no charge another serving of the bisque, at no charge. Real class. The main courses were equally great. We are regular Skates customers whenever we are in Berkeley several times a year. We have see lots of changes over the years, but this experience was the best. Keep it up Skates.
We went here for a friend's birthday, and got our requested table by the window, affording wonderful views of the bay. That's the primary attraction here, and if that's what you're looking for, go for it. But food, though not indicated by price or description, was mediocre. The kitchen forgot to put salmon on Seafood Louie salads, it was overlooked by the servers, and it was almost impossible to get someone's attention to the error. Our server had disappeared, and after mentioning this to two different people, they finally brought out the salmon, which was tasty, but oh so late! Crab cocktail was deconstructed, a fact not mentioned on menu, so required a messy-handed eating. And the crab was pretty blend, not worth the trouble digging it out. The presentation was atop dry ice, so impressive in looks -- only! Pork loin entree was overdone and extremely tough, hard to cut, and hard for our elderly companion to chew. Chocolate decadence cake was chocolate very dense cake! Like a stale brownie -- again very hard to cut into, much
less eat. So, the place is looks over substance.
I had a group of old friends (9) and we sat around a round table. It was perfect. Could not have been better.
Food quality has really sunk at this restaurant. Totally overpriced for the type and quality of the food. Very disappointing
Great restaurant for special occasions or getting together with friends. Excellent prime rib and the seafood is wonderful. We go at least two or three times a year and are never disappointed. The view is also spectacular.
Great service, delicious food and good wine list.
We ate here for the first time for our Anniversary. There was a homeless woman right at the entrance asking for money. My husband pulled out his wallet to give her a $5 but she saw a $20 and asked for that. She got $5. While sitting at our table, which has a great view of SF and the bay but we kept hearing a low humming sound like feedback on a speaker. We inquired about the sound and the waitress said she couldn't hear it, but in continued for about 20 minutes until finally stopping. I was recommended to try the lavender cosmo and it was so good, I had to have another one. We ordered the dragon roll for an appetizer and it was somewhat dry and the wasabi was super hard, but it tasted good, so we ate it all. The bread we were served was awesome; some kind of focaccia bread. My husband got the salmon and I got the sea bass; both were good but nothing exceptional. The crème brulee for dessert was awesome! Our waitress, Stephanie was awesome. Very personable and great recommendations. The service was very quick and she was a great server. We will probably go back but not often as it is quite expensive for the quality of food. Upon leaving we were hit up again by the homeless lady asking for a $20. She didn't get it.
Service was excellent view very nice two of the three food orders were very good but the third, the open face crab sandwich was not very good. Couldn’t taste or see the crab because of all the mayo and the cheese was melted but had congealed before I could eat it
Gorgeous views, good food, good service, loved the table you gave us, very happy overall.
We like Skates very much but this visit was disappointing. It was louder than normal with one table being particularly noisy. Moreover, the preparation of my fish was very poor - it was nearly raw and cold when I asked for "medium". Furthermore, the description of the dessert that we ordered did not match what appeared. All this being stated, the wait staff was excellent.
Waitstaff was very polite and attentive. The menu was not quite imaginative or diverse. Slightly odd flavor combinations but the food was was excellently prepared.
I always enjoy my time at Skates - the food is good, and the view it great no matter the kind of day!
You know I love Skates, mostly for the view and food. The place itself is looking a little tattered tho. Scuffed up chairs, baseboards, etc.... I usually go in the evening but I went for brunch....AMAZING lemon ricotta pancakes (!), so the flaws were a little glaring. Spiff this bayside gem up a bit folks!
Greatfood,amazing location with super views
