Skates on the Bay
Great meal, great service and great ambiance! Lobster was cooked to perfection and the meal was topped off with superb bread pudding!
The view is breath taking! The servers are great. The food is the best part of this experience. I had just got back from a trip in Vegas and I thought the food was superb but this place is far better then Vegas! Highly recommended.
I'd recommend a person go to Skates once simply for the view and atmosphere. It was my first visit so a more complete recommendation will have to wait for another visit. View was wonderful. Service was so so. Long stretches of time between when we saw our waiter. Two of the menu items we hoped to order they were out of. There was a very long hair in one of our desserts. Otherwise, the food was great. Clam chowder was excellent, the mussels and sauce were out of this world. Great salads and great desserts (the hair not withstanding). So because of the view and the quality of the food that we did get, definitely interested in giving it another chance to improve on the other aspects.
My friend and I go to Skates for Sunday lunch (or to treat out-of-town visitors) every month or two. Lots of specials. Sushi bar, imaginative cocktail list. And wonderful to see the Bay, the Bridges, and the boats.
We had just left the Warriors 1st Playoff game and we won, so we wanted to keep celebrating. So we decided to go here for dinner. We’ve come here many times in the past because it is so close to our home.
I went into the restroom when we first arrived. It was disgusting. You would think for how much things cost here that they could have someone clean it and check it through the day and evening. I work for a company that has many many people coming and going all day. We are always checking the restrooms to make sure they are clean and supplied.
We were seated when I came out. The person that sat us was embarrassed because there was items on chairs that shouldn’t have been there since the table was ready. We sat for over 15 minutes and still no one had spoke to us. They were busy but not that busy. We decided to leave. As we were walking to the door I made sure the two at the front desk knew we were upset and we walked out. After being in the car for 10 minutes we received a phone call from someone there offering us free drinks and appetizers. I said no thank you because we were already at the freeway to go go home.
Our night started out so great and to end like this was so upsetting.
For now on we will just keep going to Scott’s in Oakland where we are treated so good. I never write bad reviews so I guess you know how I felt
Overall the dining experience was lovely. We were a party of two. The window seats, which provided an unobstructed view wasn’t available to parties of 2. It appeared the window seats were for parties three or more. It was very disappointing not to have those tables available to us.
Good food and great service. Great atmosphere. Great place for a romantic dinner. I recommend skates for special occasions or any occasion.
Hands down the best Caesar I’ve ever had!!! I actually will drive from Sacramento just to have it. I love all the menu.
Very slow service that day.
We had a beautiful evening at Skates. The sunset was as amazing as the food and the service. Thank you Nancy for taking a few minutes to chat with us!
I have been to Skates many times since it opened. In the past the food has been good but our dinner Thursday, April 11th was the very best I have had since coming to Skates. Presentation of food was beautiful, flavors were great and portions were more than two of us could eat so I had another meal at home the next day. The host came to table several times to ask if there was anything he could do. All the people surrounding us including a baby in his basket had happy smiles. It was a night to remember for me 84th birthday. Thank you so much. Will be back very soon.
Skates is the kind of place my folks would go to back in the day for that special occasion. It’s in a great location with amazing views of the bay. And it was way fancy back in the day. It’s still got great amazing views but the menu and decor are a little bit dated now. The food was still tasty but dishes missed a little on execution: some parts of a dish were overly salty, bread a little on the stale side, creme brûlée more eggy than smooth...things like that. The service was great and they went out of their way to make our celebration feel special. The oysters were fresh and the halibut was great. Calimari was good but the portion was huge for an appetizer. I liked that the restaurant didn’t come off as pretentious. Overall a pleasant dinner and would come back again, and I know my parents would still love it.
Service was excellent, ambience was great, with a great view of Bay and the city. Price a little high for amount of food you get, but food was very good
Bread was cold & seemed to be day old. Fish (fish & chips) was sitting in grease.
I went here for my birthday with a party of 3. I ordered sushi as an appetizer and the steelhead for a main meal. I was not impressed with the sushi. It didn’t seem fresh and wasn’t good. The steelhead was delicious and I would recommend it to anyone. The view of the bay was beautiful but it was a bit loud in the restaurant. However due to the openness of the set up it was expected. The waiter was great although it took forever to get my check. Overall this is a good place to experience.
This is first bad review I've ever written for a restaurant.
The views at Skate's are gourmet, but the food is below average, and at these prices that's pretty disappointing.
Indifferent preparation, both meals were very bland. Chicken meat was poor quality, food sourcing does not seem very good in general. Actual dishes did not live up to menu, seemed like ingredients were missing. In short the baked chicken from Safeway is better than what we were served at skates. I've fairly casually whipped up a better seafood pasta in white sauce than what i was served at Skate's and I do not consider myself a great cook. Skate's really needs to try a lot harder with their food.
I always enjoy eating at Skates. Just wish I had more time during the day. But always enjoyable.
Have been coming here over the last years as it is a stunning location and view, it was always previously a highlight of a trip to the area, but I don't know what has happened, it has gone crashing down. Sqeezing more people in than ever, worn and dirty interior. Uninterested service, churned out food. The only thing that hasn't changed is the price, still charging at the prices of the quality restaraunt it used to be but falling woefully short on delivering. Shame, have good memories from years ago but will certainly never be going back
Excellent menu, service and an amazing view. I would highly recomend.
This is a place we love going to as a couple. I always take out of town guests here for the view.
We had a good experience over all, mainly because of the amazing view.
The service was great, waiters very nice.
But the place could use renovations and deep cleaning, and the food wasn't that great at brunch.
Beautiful views and good menu. We normally have very good service there. We brought out of town guests and the service this night was less than spectacular. Things seemed to take a long time to come out. For the price, we expect better service. We have taken guests out twice in the past month to the Cliff House - which is way more touristy and received much better service. Skates - don't take your local clientele for granted please!
Beautiful setting. Excellent food and service. Will definitely be back.
Great place for special occasions; ambience is second to none and the food is good and getting better each time I visit. Looking forward to our next dining experience at Skates.
Nice view and service
Came for my dads birthday and food was great! Only thing that was upsetting was the waitress. As we were leaving, she shook her head vigorously as to say her tip wasn’t enough. Look, we understand expectations and service but don’t and I repeat DONT ever make someone feel we’re not valued people just because we couldn’t make HER ends meet. Don’t recall her name but she was an older Asian lady. Very upsetting to leave thinking we weren’t enough for her expectations. Other than that, food and place was great
We were late because I was picking up my dinner companion from the airport. Yet, we were seated right away with a nice window table. The food was delicious, the service first-rate, and the ambiance terrific. My only complaint would be the high prices.
The view alone is worth a visit. Clam chowder a must and live a little and add some crab to it. Save room for dessert too!
The hosts were a little bit rude and unfriendly, which ruined the mood for a special day.
Love this restaurant! Never disappoints!
Food was delicious, I had the halibut. The service was excellent- our waiter was efficient, friendly and helpful. We had a beautiful window table. Overall it was a wonderful experience!
Lovely 21st birthday brunch for my son!
Good food. The waitperson explained the menu and drink bar to us and made it somewhat complicated. The acoustics are loud. We had a table for 6 and folks sitting on either end had trouble hearing the person on the other end diagonal end.
What an amazing brunch and outstanding service!
We were so pleased with our experience at Skates. Our server was Brittany and she was so welcoming and attentive throughout the meal. We were celebrating the birthdays of our two daughters and had asked for a window table. Table was in the corner with windows on both sides, fantastic view. The menu has so many choices that we took quite a bit of time to make our selections. Brittany did a great job of answering any questions, describing the menu options and specials, and giving us time to choose so we did not feel rushed. Food was nicely presented, delicious, and we all enjoyed our meals. The girls each were presented with a birthday dessert with candle, which was the icing on the cake, so to speak. We will definitely plan future celebrations at Skates, for the gracious service and wonderful food.
Outstanding as usual. It was a beautiful day to dine and enjoy the food. Server, Reuben, was great and our seafood louies far exceeded our expedations .
Family outing for brunch. Food was good. We had outstanding service from waiter who replaced a spilled drink and plate that got soaked. View and ambiance always very nice. This is close by and a family favorite. We have celebrated many events here and have lots of fond memories.
The view, service and food were excellent. We had a great dinner and lucky that it was a beautiful day you could see the City and the Golden Gate bridge. The water was sparkling from the rays of sunshine and the sailing boats coming in and out of the marina. The crab and artichoke dip was creamy and delicious. The green mixed salad with goat cheese was good. My wife had the King crab and sirloin steak. The king crab was sweet and fresh. I had the alakan halibut was tender and was mixed with green and red sauce the gave it a tangy flavor. The service was excellent and he was very cordial. Overall a great time and experience.
Lucky day with No Rain & Great View of GGB... Will return. Thank you.
Brunch menu too limited had to settle for something I only could half of the items on the plate.
