The menu at Six Penn Kitchen never disappoints, especially if one makes a selection from the daily specials. Two in our group had the daily fish special, and it was excellent. Dessert included a pumpkin tiramisu to die for - we should have ordered two instead of just one to split! It's a bit noisy, so wouldn't recommend it for a quiet, intimate dinner.

I am usually quite happy with Six Penn and this was probably just a one off night. I ordered the trout and the amount of trout that appeared on my plate had to be less than one ounce. I have never seen a smaller portion of trout. All the other things were just fine. The restaurant was crowded and the servers were doing their best to get to everyone.

Impressive wine list. Numerous bottles including varietals and appellations not seen on many restaurants wine lists. Wines are not cheap, but priced reasonably, including enough choices under $40 that you should be able to find a wine to your liking without too much difficulty.

For our annual trip to Pittsburgh to see the Nutcracker ballet, we chose Six Penn Kitchen for our pre-theatre dining. We started with the cheese/charcuterie appetizer with a great assortment of cheeses, meats, olives, and a wonderful mustard. I had the crab cakes which were light but with a delicate crunch per the perfect sautee, delicious. My daughter enjoyed the beef bourguignon, tender with great accompaniments. The other daughter had the special on the menu, the duck confit. The vegetables were just the right amount of tender/crunchy. Our drinks were delightful. In all this is a great place to dine. I came in on a scooter and while the main entrance is a revolving door, staff quickly sprung forward to open the adjacent side door for me. The ambience is always conducive to a great meal, the staff attentive and friendly.

NY Strip steak was delicious! Mustard apple potatoes had a bit too much mustard but weren’t too bad.
Service was great! I will definitely be back!

Overpriced compared to other similar restaurants. Went there before an event. My husband ordered the fish special. Less than 3 oz. not particularly well prepared for cost of 30.00. Son ordered pork shank. Again not particularly well prepared, and small portion. I ordered bison burger. It was ok. We had appetizer of beets, marinated olives, salmon. All were mediocre. Slow service on drinks, wine, coffee. He was very nice, but slow. Overall disappointed. I will not go back, despite eating there previously at least 5 times before. Too many good restaurants in Pittsburgh.

I visited the Six Penn before a show at the Byham. The food and service was excellent. Our server and the rest of the staff accommodated us as we were on a time crunch to make the show. We had enough time to enjoy our meal and did not feel rushed due to the efficient and timely service we received.

This is one of our favorite restaurants in downtown Pittsburgh. Right in the middle of the cultural district, so convenient to the Pittsburgh Symphony and Pittsburgh Public Theatre. They don’t let the location carry the weight, though. The food is excellent. The only drawback is the noise level, which can be quite annoying.

Usually a good meal, this time it was disapointing. The gnocchi was over cooked to a mashed potato consistency. The serrano apple sauce had no serrano

Had a wonderful dinner at Six Penn during light up night. We had a table by the window that provided great people watching during our meal. Started our meal with the muscles perfectly presented with white wine & pesto. Amazing!! The beet salad was fresh & delicious but it was very small ... there were 6 beet slices on the plate. Very disappointing for the price. The pork shank is always a treat since Six Penn makes the best in the city. The fish special was delicious. Our server Dorothy was efficient & very friendly. Thanks to Dorothy, the pace of our meal was perfect enabling us to enjoy cocktails between courses. The fresh menu selections that change with the seasons make dining at Six Penn a new experience each time.

We love SixPenn for innovative and yet reliably good food. The wait staff is knowledgeable. They are very flexible with special dietary needs. Try the Hendricks gin, lime and sage cocktail. Ask for David’s table. And I love that the desserts are yummy and not massive.

A friend and I went to Six Penn prior to the RMU Speakers Series. We both enjoyed the New York Strip which was cooked to perfection. The steak, along with the apple smashed potatoes, and roasted Brussel sprouts were more-than-enough for dinner. Loved the steak and sprouts, but the potatoes were too sweet for my taste because of the apples. Our server Frank was prompt, helpful, and very tuned into our desire to arrive at Heinz Hall on time. Only complaint: The noise level...kind of loud for two "senior" citizens. Will definitely go again.

One of the worst service experiences I have ever had. Nichole acted as if she was being bothered and/or in a hurry to deal with our party. Very slow paced, when asking for suggestions we were just told “I will give you more time”. Can I get you anything else as you are walking away is not convincing. I will not come back to this establishment. Food was palatable at best.

My daughter and I dined here before a show, and we both really enjoyed all that we tasted. I loved the butternut squash soup, and we shared the mussels. The sauce served with the mussels could have been added more liberally to the dish, but it was very tasty. My daughter had duck breast as an entree, which was wonderful, and I had a lamb Bolognese over paparadelle. Really nice! Wine selection was broad, and the wines by the glass are adequate, if perhaps priced a bit high overall. Service was personal and efficient both--we felt well taken care of. I'll definitely eat here again.

I love the food here. The Jameison lamb is fantastic. I could eat here every day. There's a variety of menu choices to accommodate everyone's nutritional needs. As if that weren't enough, the staff is A-1. Very friendly, very professional, very courteous. Always happy to explain selections and answer questions. It's quiet so there's no need to shout to be heard over music or other patrons. But the food is amazing. Truly amazing. Already looking forward to my next meal there.

Overall a good experience. Food and table service was fine. The only complaint was that we had reservations, but we ended up waiting over 15 minutes for a table. Granted, it was Saturday evening, and the place was crowded, but we did make sure to be on-time , yet were still kept waiting. Our waiter suggested we allow two hours for dining at such times, and we will follow that advice in the future.

Good farm to table food from local suppliers, but it is a busy ,bright affair not suited, on a Saturday night for a cozy quiet dinner. The wine list is extensive, but not organized enough to make selections easy. The wines offered by the glass are good, but not numerous. The pour is adequate . The portions are more than adequate and the pickup of the uneaten portions after the theatre is no trouble. Its location, in the theater district is excellent and they are cognizant of performance starting times so that a pre-show dinner or an after the show drink is easy.

We were in town to visit our son at Pitt for parents weekend and were really excited about this restaurant. We had reservations at 6:30p and were seated promptly. The service was AWFUL which made the food really less than average. We were there during the pre theater rush so don’t know if this review would apply at a different time. However, we will not be going back.

Food that arrived at the table was not as described on the menu or by the wait staff. My brunch "hash" of short ribs and eggs and vegetables was basically all just dumped in a bowl together onto of each other. The food need salt and the ribs were extremely fatty. The entire tables meal was disappointing and the wait staff was not the most attentive.

Wonderful Thursday evening dinner. In Pittsburgh for one night, happened upon this amazing restaurant. Dave, our server, was outstanding! Even the manager, also a Dave, stopped by our table. Had the tasting menu which we highly recommend. Outstanding food, wine, and service. Can't say enough about this local gem. Even had the diners at the table next to us (locals) lean over and share their recommendations. Want to immediately be a part of the neighborhood? Come here!!

We had not been to Six Penn Kitchen in a number of years and decided to go there for dinner before seeing a play in the Cultural District. For starters, my wife had the butternut squash bisque soup and I had a salad; both were very good and the portion size was generous. For entrees, I had the lamb bolognese and my wife had the beef bourgignon. Both dishes has a nice balance of flavors and the portion size was comfortable. I found the pasta in the bolognese to be cooked very well, with a little bit of "chew" and not too soft. The beef in my wife's dish was so tender there was no need to use a knife to cut it. We finished with coffee and desserts. Our server was excellent, attentive but not intrusive. We will certainly return on a future trip to the Cultural District.

Uninspired and bland, although the service was good (not the server's fault that the food is mediocre). Lousy value for money since you could get better food from a food truck. Assume that it stays open only because it's close the theaters. One person in my group said we would have preferred to just eat sandwich on the T on the way to the show rather than waste the money on this restaurant before going to a show.

We used to love this place. sadly, our last 2 visits have been disappointing and we won't be going back. We were able to get a table for 2 at 7 on a Saturday night, so that was weird. There were a lot of very loud "Price Is Right" participants, so the atmosphere was a bit jarring. My sangria was way, way too sweet, and really just a few sips of a drink with an entire glass of ice. The salad was nothing special at all. My $30 crab cake dinner was really disappointing - small, very "fishy" tasting mushy crab cakes and a gummy, bland risotto that came to the table luke-warm. To be fair, I asked the server to get them reheated, but that took 15 minutes and my husband was nearly finished eating by the time it came back out. Overall, the menu used to be way more interesting and creative. The current menu has too few non-heavy, meat based options. The best part of the meal, as always, was the mint at the end.
