The seafood dishes were excellent! The flavor of the Brussels Sprout appetizer was wonderful, but they were quite oily. The ambiance of the historic building lends interest to the decor. The major downside was service. The server was unable or unwilling to answer questions about the drinks menu, and was flat-out notably wrong about a beer he served. The timing was awkward, and an empty bread basket sat on the tiny table throughout the whole meal. Not a bad experience, just odd. We wondered if they were trying to conjure Parisian aloofness; yet every server we've ever had in France was much more helpful. We probably won't be back.
Started out OK with a cocktail at the bar. Once seated, believe 4-5 different staff attended our table with maybe one making an effort to establish rapport (we only saw him once as he checked on the meal before we'd had chance to take a bite). The person that took our order was, I am assuming, an owner or the manager? It was around then I started to feel a pretentious atmosphere. Upon ordering, I felt like something different so tried a vegetarian dish of goat cheese ravioli. I got my dish and found tiny raviolis coated with an odd assortment of vegetables that seemed pea-based and no sauce I could discern. The most egregious thing was I could not even taste any goat cheese. Overall, the dish was tasteless and after eating a few raviolis, I gave up to focus on my company. When the barely touched plate was taken and I declined to take any home, you might think a place that has any style would have caught that and addressed it (I know I should have said something but chose not to). No one said a word - just took the plate and asked about dessert. In summary, I would suggest to the Bistro that if you want to project a trendy, semi pretentious attitude, you should focus on delivering knock out meals. Will not return.
I can’t say enough good things about Sips. This restaurant is a a definite gem. The food was amazing and the service was excellent. Our server was on point. She would check on us and made sure we didn’t need anything, but didn’t interrupt our conversation. We felt welcomed and cared for. Our toddler was also welcomed and very much cared for. I was pretty shocked at the front end personnel’s response when asked if we could the bring the child in. They seemed excited to have us and not once did we feel awkward for having a child at a smaller type of restaurant, which allowed us to relax and enjoy our experience. I loved the decor and the ambience. Very intimate, but also suitable for larger parties. We can’t wait to go back and have the English toffee cake again. It’s to die for!
My husband and I enjoyed a cozy table for two on a Friday evening. We were interested in French cuisine and found this restaurant to fit the bill. The wine list was good, the menu was interesting, and the crab cakes were very good. My husband had the ravioli and was surprised by vegetables and clear broth in place of traditional sauce, though enjoyed the flavors. A little pricey but we will visit again. A nice find in Phoenixville with its own complimentary parking lot.
We had an early 6:30 reservation on a Thursday night. There was only one other couple in the dining room. We were shown to the worse table in the room and when we objected were assigned to a better table. I order a Cosmo and it was the worse Cosmo I have ever had, I couldn't taste the Cointreau so I wasn't looking forward to a good meal. However, both my entree and my husband's meal was very good.
P.S. The bar was busy.
It started off well where Mike, our server greeted us, took our order and our first meal came out, French Toast which tasted OK. Then it's suddenly fell apart soon after when everybody else's food around us came and our meals did not. Two other parties that sat after us, ordered and got their meals before our order came out. Server came by once to let us know our meals are coming out but only after he may have noticed that I was looking a bit frazzled. No apology was given. What started out as a pleasant first visit unfortunately did not end well. Oh well.... sigh
Sips gets better every year! Love the handmade cocktails, delicious approachable french food but not fancy. The owner and well trained staff go out of their way to make you feel at home. The Staff are attentive, pleasant and polite, rare these days in the dining world - Homemade French Onion soup, fresh oysters, mussels and so much more. They offer something for everyone from the sophisticated foodie to the basic eater. We rarely order dessert, the toffee bread pudding was excellent. This is our favorite neighborhood gem consistently YUM!
This was our 1st time at Sips. We chose to dine outdoors, which turned out to be an excellent choice. They really created a nice oasis out there, away from the business of downtown Phoenixville. There was no noticeable noise from the street at all. We had the following: tuna tartare app., 6 oysters, short-rib grilled cheese, mussels entree, and sticky toffee pudding for dessert.
The tuna tartare was really good, and different from most of the lightly sauteed rectangular strips you get everywhere. The oysters were fine, though almost all had a hard piece of shell or two in them and at $3/piece were a little overpriced. The short-rib grilled cheese was inventive and absolutely delicious! The mussels were good, but the fra diablo sauce could have used a little more spice and overall seasoning. The fries that came with both entrees were some of the best fries we have ever had (I know, I know, it is just fries, but man they do them right). We were delighted to see sticky toffee pudding on the dessert menu, and it did not disappoint. We also had 4 different cocktails, which were all very good.
Our server was perfect and all other staff we encountered were pleasant as well.
We were here once before and really enjoyed our experience. Had a groupon and were excited to try it again. Very, very disappointed this second time. We ordered the Atlantic Char entree and the rabbit with spinach pappardelle pasta entree. The char was extremely "fishy" tasting but thought maybe it was just my taste buds so asked my dining partner to try it also. He agreed it was so fishy that it must have been spoiled. So, I did not and could not finish my entree (had only 3 bites and that was more than enough). He said that that the spinach pasta was so overbearing in spinach taste that the "iron" flavor in it overpowered everything else in his dish. Since I was not able to eat my meal, I waited for my waitress to return to see "how was my dish" so I could let her know and possibly get another, different meal and bring it to her attention but she never returned. Instead the busser came by and took my still full plate. When the waitress finally came by to check on our meals, our table had been completely cleared by the busser. She did offer to bring me another meal, but by that time, my dining partner was already done and it was a little late for me to wait for another meal.
Not sure that I willl return again. Too many other restaurants in the Phoenixville area that I have consistently had very excellent dining experience at.
This was our first visit for my husband's birthday, just the two of us. We went on a Wednesday evening. Loved the novel French style cuisine with additional European influences. They had Pandora music which was not overly loud, but just right, nice mix of music. I also found a Groupon for Sips, which was a nice bonus. The service was just right, the food was excellent. I kept thinking my daughter would love this, and later found out she has already visited on several occasions as it's a favorite. Uploading pix of coq au vin and the veal dinners. Special thanks to the staff and chef for a memorable experience!
We went a little early for our 630pm reservation and we're happy we did. Sips has an inviting bar area for cocktails with a decent happy hour. Half off apps and discounted drinks. The fried oysterst and pot stickers were tasty. Dinner in the restaurant area was good but I can't say excellent. We both preferred the veal dinner to the scallops. Service was good but a touch aloof. We would go back.
Ever since discovering Sips, it has been worth the drive to Phoenixville. The French Bistro style with high end cuisine make the restaurant a vast improvement over the likes of Park in the city. The food it as good or better, there is less crowd and the staff is truly fabulous. Highly recommended.
I am always pleased when I visit SIPS. They always feature a fantastic cheese board that changes all the time, and have wonderful specials in addition to their menu favorites. I had a beautiful short rib on this visit, while my sister had the rabbit - something she had never tried before. Both dishes were rich and delicious and the presentation is lovely. Our server Jeffery is fantastic, and always provides top-notch service. Be sure to try one (or several!) of their specialty cocktails as their mixologist is the best in town. I recommend SIPS for any occasion or for just a night out.
We had a lovely dinner at Sips. Our starters & main courses were delish & the service was excellent. We had hoped to eat outside, but the rain prevented that. The outside area appeared large & pleasant. Our cocktails were very good. I would say that the temp was too cold, but that is true (for me) almost everywhere.
