Guided by Chef Anthony Chittum, Vermilion stands committed to the growers, farmers, watermen and myriad purveyors of the Mid-Atlantic watershed. As a native of Maryland's Eastern Shore, Anthony brings an innate sense of place to each plate with an intractable reverence for local ingredients, and an aesthetic that allows these ingredients to shine.

The thoughtfully curated beverage program at Vermilion echoes this philosophy with an expansive offering of terroir-driven wines and a cocktail menu committed to seasonally-sourced ingredients. A sensational collection of over 150 fine whiskies, ryes and bourbons rounds out the experience and for many serves as reason enough to visit time and again.

    Vermilion’s Dining Room offers a seasonally-driven celebration of our Mid-Atlantic region and the myriad purveyors who call it home. Chef Anthony Chittum’s continuously evolving menus reflect the day-to-day seasonality of their work and serve as a love letter to the rich bounty this region provides. In addition to the a la carte menu, we're proud to offer the Farm Table tasting menu experience, a family-style three course option designed to showcase our menu in its entirety. For guests unable to access the upstairs dining room, we will happily offer this in the downstairs tavern and bar.

    Ugh. I hate to write this. Bad bad bad. Fruit flies buzzing around us like crazy, mediocre, flavorless swordfish, a few vegetables and roasted potatoes tossed around in some pesto- just plain disappointing. Head chef was away, and it was overwhelmingly apparent. We usually love it here, but tonight was a bust. (cocktail was good.)

    I had an unforgettable dining experience at Vermilion on a date night. From the moment I walked in, I was struck by the cozy, romantic ambiance of the upstairs dining room. The dim lighting, rustic decor, and view of the street below created the perfect setting for an intimate and relaxing evening. The highlight of my visit was the Amish Chicken Two Ways dish which my wife also ordered. It was cooked to absolute perfection. The chicken was incredibly juicy, and the skin was crisped just right, golden and flavorful without being burnt. The freshness of the meat stood out immediately, and I appreciated that it wasn’t overly salted or spiced, which allowed the natural flavours to shine through. This dish was accompanied by morel mushrooms, English peas, Madeira wine, and whipped potatoes, all of which complemented the chicken beautifully. Every bite was comforting, and expertly balanced. The service also deserves special mention. The hostess was kind, welcoming, and very accommodating, which made the whole experience feel even more personalized and enjoyable. It’s clear that the staff cares about making guests feel comfortable and well taken care of. For dessert, we ordered the dark and milk chocolate cremeux, and it was the perfect end to the meal. It was rich and decadent, with just the right level of sweetness, satisfying without being overwhelming. It matched the elegance and thoughtfulness of the entire meal. Overall, Vermilion exceeded all my expectations. The food, service, and ambiance all came together seamlessly to create an incredible experience. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for top-quality dining in Alexandria. This is a place I’ll be returning to without hesitation. Compliments to the cooking team

    We chose Vermilion for a business dinner among friends. The family-style farm table dining option was a splendid fine dining experience and a terrific value. We had bites of each of several beautiful and delicious appetizers and salads, and shares the short rib entree with roast broccolini, and strawberry rhubarb cake for dessert. While they have a nice wine and cocktails list, I chose an NA pilsner that refreshed. What a pleasure. Attentive and gracious service. Friendly energy but not loud.

    Outstanding experience at Vermillion. Went on a Sunday evening, and the service was excellent. Highly knowledgable staff that helped us with menu selection, and advised on the differences between the tasting menu and a la carte. Food was outstanding - fresh, understated, well prepared. Highly recommend the beet salad and the crispy oysters for starters, and the shortrib entree was sublime. The food has complex flavor profiles, with no one flavor overpowering, resulting in well balanced and approachable dishes. Highly recommend Vermillion!

    Vermilion is a lovely restaurant on King Street. Very nice decor,with 2 floors. We sat on the first floor near the front windows. There is a nice bar area that is completely apart from the dining area. Our server,Andrea,was very knowledgeable and extremely attentive. We started with delicious cocktails. Our decision was to select the tasting menu. Very imaginative and delicious small plates. Our shared entree of short rib was tender and flavorful. A salad and charred broccolini was included. We paired the meal with a glass of Pinot noir. Dessert was dark&milk chocolate cremeux. Excellent meal and experience.

    Had a lovely meal with 5 friends, food was fantastic and service was perfect — attentive without being helicopter-y. We opted for the prix fixe chef’s menu which was a bit expensive but every bite delivered. Definitely worth treating yourself. Will be back!
