About this restaurant

  • Great for scenic views
  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
The dome-shaped venue on the Hoe, aptly named The Dome, was designed by architect Tony Irish. The Dome was first opened in July 1988 as part of Mayflower commemorations in Plymouth and started life as a local museum and tourist information centre.

Designed to have the Art Deco feel and opulence of a 1930s ocean liner, the venue’s bar will feature an extensive wine and gin list, a selection of cocktails plus a full range of beers, ciders and soft drinks.

The restaurant’s menu will feature fresh, local and seasonal produce and will include fish sourced from local day boats. We will also be offering traditional afternoon teas.

There will be opportunities for private dining, small weddings and business meetings – all set against a spectacular ocean view backdrop!

This is the first time we have been in the evening having previously been several times during the day ( Sundays) . Going on a Sunday enabled you to have Sunday roast which has always been excellent . The main menu was ok slightly over priced for what we had and food was mediocre .The staff were attentive even though the there was a wedding party and a large table party . Would I go again in the evening probably not but Sunday lunch yes .

Our first visit to The View at the Dome and we were absolutely delighted with the whole experience The view from the bar and restaurant is incredible, overlooking the Plymouth Sound, across to Mount Edgcombe and the Rame Peninsula, it’s has to be one of the best locations for a restaurant in the city The food and service was superb, a small, yet varied menu, well balanced for all dietary tastes and requirements. The servings were very generous indeed, and beautifully presented. The team were attentive and professional as well as welcoming and friendly, we wish we had longer to enjoy the view however this was a pre-show dinner before an evening at the theatre which is only a couple of minutes by car from the restaurant

Lovely setting and good service but the food was a bit average. I had pork loin and it was gristly and dry. The slaw was full of oil and the corn on cob had been so drenched in butter it was tasteless. My partner had fish n chips, it was average but not amazing. I would go for the view but not the food.

Unfortunately steak was served well done (requested medium) and when sent back it was served exactly the same the second time around. However, our waitress Eve was brilliant, apologised immediately and could not do enough to try and remedy the situation. The food itself was amazing, just a shame the meat was slightly overdone but still a delicious meal, and the desserts were incredible too.

The menu contains typical standard pub/restaurant food - it is not particularly fancy or imaginative but good food nonetheless. I had fish and chips which was a good portion size and very tasty - better than most pubs but not a 'fine dining' experience. My desert was the 'Smeaton's Mess', which was delicious but far too big ! I have a healthy appetite but felt that it was not very sophisticated to serve such a massive portion of thick cream and meringue - although some people may enjoy the large quantity. The service and ambience are great and the view (we sat by the window) was really good ! We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening although being a Monday evening it was pretty quiet and we had to sit in the bar rather than the restaurant section, which was fine with us. I would recommend The Dome as a place to eat in Plymouth.

Food and service was good, only criticism was we book via the app and we didn't realise it was only for the restaurant menu and didn't include the lighter lunch menu. So due to this we didn't use the restaurant, but eat in the bar area. We were informed by staff you can't book the bar area.
