About
Second time at Simbal, this time around for their DineLA menu, and it was another explosions of intricate and absolutely incredible flavors! The food there is orgasmic and I had been dreaming to go back since my last visit so I could explore more of their seasonal menu; me and my date were not disappointed. My mouth is literally watering as I'm writing these words... Thank you for such a delectable experience!
Food was creative and delicious, reasonably priced, wine list was spectacular, great value, went for dinner but want to go back for lunch and happy hour
Very tasty inventive take on Vietnamese - a little bit of fusion. Portions on the smaller side. Restaurant was cold in temerature - had to keep my jacket on for first half of the meal. Decor is stark, modern, minimalist, maybe a little too much. Felt a bit cold atmosphere and seating was not the most comfortable. Price is reasonable for the level of the cuisine. Service was excellent - efficient and pleasant.
The food was amazing. Thai tea panna cotta was amazing—well actually, all the food was amazing. The Taste of Simbal is definitely worth it! Not to mention the amazing service.
We were very impressed with both the creativity and execution of the food at Simbal. We tried the seasoned peanuts, Hamachi crudo, fried tofu, tartare with larb seasoning, duck, and salmon. They were all excellent; the crudo and fried tofu were our favorites. Both the coconut flan and thai tea panna cotta were wonderful desserts. My husband enjoyed the Riesling flight, poured and described by the sommelier; his Mudd Crickett cocktail was outstanding. Service was friendly, but there was a slight miss for us when our server just dumped our bill on the table without asking if we wanted any drinks with dessert (we did). It seemed like they were intent on turning all the tables (perhaps because of DineLA?). Overall outstanding; we will be back.
Loves ittttttttttttttt
Fantastic food. Should be way busier! The crispy tofu was beyond delicious. Loved the cocktails too.
Hidden Gem on South San Pedro! Incredibly tasty modern Asian fusion gourmet cuisine with very fast friendly service!
Each dish was beautifully presented and delicious- my favorite was the Himachi Crudo and Heavenly Beef, the flavors just resonated with us and deciphering each layer was fun. Nice cocktail list, but the draft beer choices where short given all the craft breweries in the LA area. In all, good value, great service, nice staff, and the owners add 20% to the bill to pay for health care for all their employees- LOVE this. No tipping. Just transparency. We will be back.
The food was truly outstanding. Unfortunately, the service was so lacking it almost became a joke throughout our meal. The staff was trying their best, but it was clear that the restaurant was understaffed and disorganized. I will definitely try this place again because the food was so good, but I hope they are able to put a lot more attention on the service next time.
Amazing! The tasting menu is a must, and the cocktails are to die-for. Service was excellent as well.
Simbal is a delight on all levels. A very handsome and sleek style and ambiance, and a warm and inviting vibe. They serve pan-Asian, mostly Southeast Asian cuisine primarily via small, shared plates. All is spectacularly good, especially the steak, octopus and hamachi, but everything was creatively prepared, seasoned and presented. The service is uncommonly friendly and capable.
Deserved far better than to go out of business.
I guess serving unexpected versions of southeastern Asian food when people expect pho isn't the path to success. But it should have been.
It was difficult to find which didn't help.
Rip. Probably would have played better on the west side.
We came in as a group of four and the waitress recommended around 3 dishes for one person, which was just too much. We tired many dishes on the menu - food was fine but really pricy for what we got.
Really yummy food and great service. The entrance is right near the parking lot ramp on 2nd St, so it can be hard to find.
Their "crudo" dish is the very best I've had. We loved this restaurant. Every dish we ordered was FABULOUS. Would definitely recommend.
This restaurant never fails to impress me. I recommend the flan for dessert!
Menu/ Food is interesting/ outstanding - drinks, appetizers, 'entree's
Service - somewhat slow, but, worth the wait.
On my list to 'go back!'
Simbal is an outstanding restaurant with exceptional food and service.
Solid meal. Great hospitality. Service could have been a bit snappier.
The Taste of Simbal was out of this world. We ordered Hamachi Crudo, Mushroom Salad, Crispy Tofu, Hangar Steak Tartare, Wild Octopus, Thai Tea Panacotta and Coconut Flan. Each dish sparkled with flavor and lovely presentation. Waitress Danielle couldn't have been better. Do yourself a favor and try this place. You can thank me later!
Almost empty on a Thursday night. Difficult to find but otherwise great dinner!
Another incredible and delicious meal at Simbal. The cocktails are wonderful and the food- you can really taste the love in every dish. The bone marrow with chili jam was outstanding- especially that puffy bread that you spread it on. The fried rice had complex flavors packed with umami. The steak tartare is a must there- so addictive, again with that beautiful puffy bread. We got all of the desserts this time, and the standouts were the Thai tea panna cotta & the coconut flan with light coconut snow. Amazing!
Thoroughly impressed with the decor, ambience, service, and food. Vietnamese-fusion for the Instagram age. I'm Vietnamese myself, and brought my parents to try it and they liked it. Familiar south-eastern flavors with north-western twists.
Never disappoints. More delicious than the last time. Creative but not unapproachable. Totally great
Simbal is a fantastic restaurant. A great little getaway hidden in Little Tokyo. Food is amazing. Fantastic drinks! Our waiter was happy, kind, and very helpful.
Incredible attention to detail, and delicious thoughtful food that is pleasing to the eyes & to the palate. A seat at the counter is the best place to watch the magic happen in the gorgeous open kitchen. The beef tartare is heavenly, and the coconut dessert with airy coconut snow is one of the best desserts in LA. A must-have dining experience!
Always an amazing time! Seriously one of my top 3 restaurants in L.A., and that "taste of simbal" menu is a total steal. Definitely get the bone marrow, the crudo, and the tartare.
When you can taste the love in food, combined with precise execution and then mix in stellar service, excellent mezcal cocktails and perfect wine pairings, you know you have found a winner. The setting creates a mood that makes this a true gem.
Great food and wonderful, attentive staff! I would definitely recommend Simbal to family & friends
amazing food, would eat the rib eye and smoked potatos every day of the week and twice on sundays
Service was great, had to order a lot of plates to have enough to eat for dinner. Food was just okay, but out of everything we ordered, I did enjoy the hummus and the grilled octopus.
Simbal never disappointed us that is why we keep on going back.
While the food here is good I left after a 3 hour meal wanting more. Pricing is pretty steep for the portions but they also over estimate their recommendation for each person. They say 3 per person is about right and between the 4 of us girls we ordered 11 dishes which were all only about 1/2 eaten. I'd say about 1-2 per person is just fine especially for females.
Great food - flavors are bold and simple. Cocktails are fantastic as well. Restaurant music was really good! Service was outstanding as well.
Good date spot. Great Vietnamese fusion spot; very similar to DLTA's Little Sister. We went on a Friday at 7:30 p.m. and there were only a few other people dining at the time.
My friend and I indulged in the four-course prix fixe meal - I say indulge but it was such an amazing deal for such amazing food! Favorites includes the fried tofu, crudo, beef tartare and Thai tea ice cream. Would skip the duck and mushrooms next time, but they were still great. One of the best restaurants I've been to in LA - and I've been to many!
Love this place! Great for casual and business dinners.
Don't understand why this place is not packed every hour of the day
One of the best meal experiences I've had in 2016. Great food, great vibe, excellent drinks, and the service was attentive and helpful. Highly recommended, would definitely come here again.
