Sign of the Whale is set to open in August of 2014, at the brand new waterfront development - Harbor Point in Stamford, CT. Sign of the Whale is a 10,000 square foot venue with a one of kind 5,000 square foot roof top beer garden overlooking the Long Island Sound. The restaurant will be open daily for lunch and dinner and boast a vibrant nightlife with DJs Thursday through Saturday.

Food was very good, service was mediocre, there was only one waiter for the section and it took a little long. Played good music, there was a birthday party that night however the music was kind of loud for those not part of the party. Overall good experience, will return when the weather is nicer to get the rooftop experience.
7 pm on a Friday night. For a certain age group this restaurant is great. However, when we walked in, greeted by a very young hostess and energetic disco beat, we felt like we were walking into the past - circa 70's. The extremely loud beat never stopped and we watched countless young singles walk past our table.
If you are over 50 (or maybe even 40) I would think twice about having a relaxing seafood dinner here.
All that said, the food was surprisingly good (baked oysters were great), and the service (Asher) was very accommodating. They looked the other way when confronted with gray hair! lol
Service was horrible and it wasn't even that crowded. Went to celebrate my best friends bachelorette party and arrived for dinner (8:30 pm reservation for 6 people). Didn't get greeted at our table until 30 minutes of sitting there. Once our food finally arrived, we couldn't find our server for silverware and napkins that were missing from the table. When the server came back to ask how everything was we asked for more water and waited 15 minutes before he came back and we had to remind him. Then he disappeared and we had to grab a manager to get our check to leave. Food wasn't amazing and service was so poor, I would never go back again.
Read reviews and decided to try. Every place around was crowded but inside this place was empty. Now we know why. Upstairs and outdoors may be good. We didn't try. Downstairs and inside not worth it. Only good thing was waitress who seated us. Unfortunately she couldn't serve us. Language barrier with our waiter. Food was bad and bill very pricey. We won't be going back.
First, they didn't want to seat us, despite our Open Table reservation, because they said "Open Table doesn't take into account our table turnover rate and we don't really have room for you. This is often a problem." Meanwhile, there were 6+ tables wide open. They seated us but acted like it was a big favor.
Later, the server placed our appetizer on the table...but no silverware or napkins. We had to chase her down for those items. At least she looked embarrassed.
Food was mediocre. My eggs were cold.
Soundtrack was insanely loud, especially considering it was Sunday brunch. You had to scream if you wanted to talk. And the music never actually turned into a "song" - it was just thumping electronica that NEVER VARIED for 45 minutes.
We will not be back.
The manager greeted us at the door and stated the delivery truck had a flat and would be running late on some of their produce (orange juice, eggs, steak) approx. 15-20 minute wait. Hmmm, we were there for brunch and those items are essential to lunch. Although a few of our guests were running a few minutes late as well (by 11:45am), we still waited a good amount of time to order. I had suggested to the waitress, Fabian (sweet but slow) that perhaps her manager should have gone to the grocery store and purchase the items to hold the restaurant over. There were a few tables before us that had been been waiting already. It's unfortunate the circumstances; however, as a manager you make sure that your customers are fed in a timely and efficient manner. A light bulb might have gone on in his head or Fabian mentioned something to him bc then several minutes later, we see staff taking groceries from a car. Also, another point to be made is that not once were we offered a complimentary beverage for the inconvenience.
We had brunch. Food was great. Service was great...problem is they had music blasting at 12:30 in the afternoon and besides our party (which was 2 couples) there were a few families there with kids that also didn't feel like having ultra loud music. We asked 3 times to lower music and they said ok and then didn't do it . So it was way too hard to talk and enjoy all the other positives about the place.
One of the most disappointing restaurants I have been in a long time in the Stamford area.
One would expect that on a holiday weekend a restaurant is fully stacked. I ordered a drink - waiter came back "they ran out of the vodka" i asked for. I ordered a bloody mary, absolutely awful - i had to send it back. One person ordered wine - had to send it back - the glass was filthy. Another person in our party ( there were four of us) ordered his food, waiter came back much later - the kitchen ran of the fish. The music was so loud, we couldn't have a decent conversation. Mind you this all happened at 6pm, so it was still fairly early. Interesting experience to say the least.
Service was extremely poor. We had a party of 4 and it took around 90 min for 3/4 of us to be served, with the 4th plate coming about 10 min after. In that span of time, the waiter was only able to get 2 rounds of drink orders in for us. After talking to who looked like a manager about the service, he said he'd take a round of drinks off our bill... He didn't. After complaining to the waiter about his efforts, he explained it was the kitchen's fault. But I don't think the kitchen is responsible for taking 30 min to charge our credit cards.
Food was good, but won't be dining here again.
We enjoyed a delicious beet salad to start, and then two yummy sandwiches; one was a crab cake with a perfect balance of crab and mayonnaise, the other a Caesar wrap that came with a side of Brussel Sprouts. Two demerits: one for the French martini which had to be sent back to be adjusted and the other because the reservation was not reported to Open Table until Open Table checked it out.
Wanted to try a new restaurant. We ordered appetizer, 2 salads and 2 entrees. Waiter brought 1 salad before appetizer and never brought 2nd salad. The entrees were very good. Pricey but good. Roof bar a zoo. Loose floor tiles on roof makes one question quality of construction.
I went with my mom for Mother's Day brunch. I used Open Table to reserve the table at 1:30pm. A little later brunch than expected, but that is all they really had. At that time there were for sure tables that were opened and easy to get a table without a reservation. There was a DJ playing some music a little too loud but we could still hear each other talking. The signature drinks there are pretty strong so beware. The brunch food we had was really good especially those Oreo pancakes! Overall great experience!
The food is mediocre and prices are kind of high which doesn't match up to the quality of the food. I was really excited about the truffle fries since I LOVE truffle fries. But i was highly disappointed with the truffle fries! They were regular fries with a truffle mayo sauce. Although the waitress said they were truffle fries with truffle aioli sauce. If you ask me, they were regular fries. And trust me, I know how truffle fries are suppose to tast like. Then we had the crab cakes which were undercooked! Not good.
During our dinner, they had a band playing which adds to the crowd noise from bar. I wouldn't recommend coming here for dinner if you're looking to have a conversation with whomever you're with since the live band and bar noise makes it difficult.
The service was a hit or miss. At the start of our first visit to this restaurant, the waitress was friendly and very helpful with walking us through the menu. After we received our food, it was difficult to get service for just water (which they don't serve unless you request. I thought it's common for every restaurant to just bring water at the very beginning...guess not)
They sat us near a large party of 15+ where sometimes we felt the party was over spilling with people standing right next to us having conversation in small groups.
Overall I think it's in a nice location near water in Stamford with the rooftop bar which I hear is nice during the spring and summer. But, I'm not fascinated by the food or service here. I'd only return back for drinks.
I went early on a Saturday night (6ish) so had none of the noise problems other people mentioned. That's the end of the highlights.
The food was mediocre across the board, at best. The soup was lukewarm. One of my favorite pizzas is fig and prosciutto. Seeing that on the menu is what steered me here in the first place. I was overjoyed to think I could find this a mile from home. Well, let's just say I won't be going back for that. The cheese wasn't really melty, the prosciutto was sparse and the fig was more of a drizzle than anything else. I took the leftovers home -- that I didn't finish it is a warning sign -- and eventually threw them out rather than eat them.
As for the view, I was seated at a table with a lovely view...of the health club across the street. Nothing says dining elegance like watching people sweat. I guess maybe the idea is to guilt you into ordering a salad rather than the mediocre pizza?
They need to make this restaurant feel warmer. Putting some heat on would be a good start. We went last summer and it was good. Food was much better and we ordered similar items. Service was good both times, but uncomfortable setting., especially during the holidays. Needs to be more festive!
We were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was! It is definitely a place for young (20-30) people with their very loud rooftop bar but we had an excellent meal. Appetizers were delicious and dinner was great! One of the best short rib meals we ever had. Who knew? Service was erratic but overall a very nice evening.
I was curious to try this restaurant, and took my visiting parents. I was not impressed by the atmosphere, it catered more to a younger crowd. The waitress was a bit clueless. The food was good. The most impressive point was the manager who noticed we waited an hour for our food, and he compensated me with a $50 gift certificate to come back.
At the recommendation of friends, we went to Sign of the Whale for the first time. It was a beautiful day so we wanted to eat outside. It was a Tuesday night but apparently they had 2 parties going on in the upstairs outdoor space. It was fairly crowded and more of a "drinking scene" so we ate downstairs. (It was very windy in the outside front seating.) Our server was great, but the bartender was very slow. Once we got our drinks, they were delicious as was the food. I wouldn't recommend going to this place during the week, but I'm sure it's more energizing over the weekends.
Sat on the rooftop which was lovely! It was busy so service was very slow. My hubby and I ordered drinks...waiter came back a few minutes later to tell us that they had run out of the liquor for those two drinks (Crown Royale, Absolut Citron?!?) so we had to order something else. Also they dIdn't have a couple of the entrees available (one that my husband wanted). This was our second time at the restaurant and the SAME thing happened last time. Last time I ordered two drinks before finding one that they had all of the ingredients to make it (and those drinks were off of their drink menu!)
While the decor and ambience is great, and the rooftop bar seemed to be packed, we went for dinner and were sadly disappointed. It took 20 minutes to even receive water or have our order taken, and 40 minutes in we left as we still hadn't received any of the drinks or appetizers we ordered. We were also told by the waiter they didn't have 90% of the beers on tap, although we were in plain sight of the bar and saw the bartender pouring beers for other customers, so clearly a lack of communication was going on with the staff. In addition, 3 of the drinks we ordered were beers and we never saw the bartender attempt to pour 1, so after 40 minutes of sitting in a booth with no drinks, appetizers, or anything but a glass of water, we left. We were not the only customers to leave; others never got to place orders and others kept receiving the wrong drinks and sending them back. In 40 minutes we did not see one food item come out of the kitchen. The restaurant was not busy at the time, maybe 10 customers total. Shame, it has great potential. May go back to try the bar, only because it is a roof bar with a view and outdoors, but other than that never again.
