Sierra Mar - Post Ranch Inn
this is THE special occasion hot spot along the pacific coast highway south of San Fran.
Some of the dishes were amazing. Some just good.
We went here on our honeymoon and the service and cuisine were fantastic. We requested a window view table and they gladly moved us to a table with a killer view! They also gave us each a complimentary glass of champagne for dining with them on our honeymoon! I would absolutely go back there again and I highly recommend the wagyu beef ribeye. It melts in your mouth. Yummm
View is of course, great.
However, this is a restaurant so based on that it’s a no go.
I would give the chef high marks for presentation- the food is pretty on the plate. I had the Sole filet and my wife ordered a quinoa dish. Neither of these I would serve to friends at home because of food quality.
Portions are very small as well. Service is average. Prices are very high and that’s the bar they set but don’t meet at all...
Great lunch with an amazing view! The set menu was very interesting and the staff was very nice.
I was not thrilled to find out that there was a $75/person fixed menu for not-hotel guests, whereas the guests had the option of an a la carte menu.
One of the best experience ever. The view is amazing!
This is a must-go destination spot in Big Sur. The view is impossible to replicate - breathtaking. The chef does not rely on the view for business. The prix fix was exceptional. Our salad and soup were perfectly balanced. My entree may have been the best burger I’ve ever eaten, and Anna’s sole was beautifully presented and even more beautifully seared and balanced. Dessert was gorgeous - too gorgeous to eat - but that didn’t stop us and we were not disappointed. My 5-star reviews - especially across all categories - are reserved and rare, but Sierra Mar deserves everything we’ve come to expect from the best of Seattle (Tilth, Altura, Poppy, the sadly-defunct Rovers). Very well done!
We treated our adult children to an evening at Sierra Mar! They said everything from the food, the view and the service was above and beyond! They absolutely loved it! We can’t wait to try it ourselves!
Great food, great service, great view. A rare and unique combination.
We make an annual trip to Sierra Mar for a birthday luncheon. Having read of the menu changes under the new chef we were apprehensive about what our experience might be like. There was no need for concern as our experience was as it has been previously, excellent.
We arrived at the 12:15 seating time, and entered a nearly empty restaurant. Thoughfully being seated at a corner window table secluded from other diners, we enjoyed beautiful ocean vistas during our meal.
The food is fresh, much grown on site at their gardens, with unusual and very complimentary flavors imparted by the use of micro greens and flowers. I especially enjoyed the infused oil in my lobster bisque. I was unfamiliar with the flavors in the oil which complimented the lobster, adding a deeper layer of flavor that teased my palate. In addition, the nasturtiums and seared baby onion or leek rings on the soup added contrasting colors as well as surprisingly complimentary flavors and textures.
I had the duck, which was tender with a crisp skin. Delicious.
My companion enjoyed the mixed green salad, with a variety of lettuce greens and baby chard and leek, complimented by slivers of apple and Marcon almonds in a light lemon vinegaret. His pasta dish was simple and fresh.
Dessert was intense in flavor, and portion size was perfect. We were pleasantly filled at the end of the meal, not going away hungry as other reviewers have stated.
We look forward to returning for another great dining experience.
If you have time take a tour of the vegetable and flower garden where fresh produce is grown for the kitchen. We had a lovely tour, and enjoyed the opportunity to discuss gardening with the gardener, and see his micro green and mushroom growing operation. Many thanks to him for his interest in showing visitors what he is doing to support the kitchen.
spectacular views, great food (though my sauce was split so not the best) and fantastic service. worth asking for a seat outside.
Incredible views and impeccable service. Hanna was the best!
The view can be spectacular when weather is nice. It was foggy when we were there. The food was so so. The salad and dessert are average. My burger, the meat was cook nicely medium rare but the buns were over toasted and the fries over fried and dry. If you want a nice view, find a good hike. If you want a good meal try the Sur House.
I had lunch. Salad was good, main course good(fish) dessert terrible. Dessert was a teenie thin slice of lemon poppyseed cake (so easy to make) with some dots of fruit purée I think they microwaved it to get it warm because it was soooo hard and rubbery -just yucky -could not even cut it. Also I went away still very hungry. I also could not understand a couple of the waiters when they were trying to explain the dish-they spoke so fast and with a mumbled accent. They can do so much better-needs more management for that price point.
A great restaurant for celebrating something really special. The service and the food were superb. The location and design of the restaurant were amazing. Highly recommended.
Beautiful restaurant with fabulous food! The views are incredible - nothing like a window seat overlooking the Pacific 750 feet below! The staff are very accommodating from providing a ride up to the restaurant on the hill, to turning up the heat and providing a shawl to ward off a chill. The food was delicious and there is an extensive wine list to find just the right pairing. All in all a terrific experience!
At these prices, service should not be rushed. It was if she expected us to order drinks and meal at same time. We were paying top dollar for this lunch, and being rushed soured it a bit. At the same time, valet service and ride to the dining room was top notch, professional, and so pleasant. One of our party forgot her jacket, and he was so kind to immediately drive us back up to get it.
Amazing, magical location to dine in quiet, up-scale yet casual style. Our 3-course lunch was delectable, our waiter was an obvious pro who made us welcome, and the ocean views will be a memory will always treasure. It was a warm afternoon in a picture-book setting. Awesome in every way!
Very disappointing...I was super excited to eat lunch at Sierra Mar and was planning on going back for dinner. Chef tasting three course menu ...just ok. My husband had a burger and a boring arugula salad. I had spinach leek soup which was actually delicious until the giant hair appeared 😖 and butternut squash risotto. Anyway, the experience would have been better with better service. I think the servers may need better training. . Worst meal of our trip so far basically because of less than adequate server, Katie. Beautiful view though.
Not somewhere we would go all the time since it’s a fixed 3 course lunch menu, but the food was unique and the view was breathtaking !
Everything about this restaurant is both amazing and special! Highly recommend to everyone who is in the area - delicious food, top-notch service, and impeccable/stunning views.
It's a pity the food is so much less than the view. Come with very low expectations and you won't be disappointed.
Me and my husband were there on our honeymoon dinner . The place , view and a food were pretty impressive, I will definitely come back. My only problem was that I couldn’t really understood our waitress because on his heavy accent. And the food needed to be described . Sometimes I even thought she was talking to us French, lol. Overall, great experience, thank you
Outstanding food in a spectacular setting!
Was great but they didn’t acknowledge birthday
Excellent! You get the best and pay for the best!
We had dinner in April 2018 to celebrate a very special occasion. The best part was by far the service.
The location of the restaurant is stunning, service is very attentive and the food is very good. We particularly enjoyed the oysters starter. The beef tartar was also delicious. The bison steak main course was good, although not as tender as I would have liked it to be. Deserts were also very good. A great selection of wines, also including by the glass.
Overall, a fabulous place to celebrate a special occasion, I would definitely recommend. Special thanks to the team for helping make this an even more special night.
P.s. Make sure you ask for a table next to the windows to be able to fully enjoy the view. :)
My wife and I decided to splurge on our anniversary and had dinner at Sierra Mar after having several friends recommend it.
The dinner menu was a four course prix fixe that included a choice of white bean soup or carrot salad, foie gras mousse or abalone, rack of lamb, salmon, or bacon wrapped filet, and for dessert a choice of butterscotch pudding or black & white (basically a dark and white chocolate mini cake).
The restaurant is a rustic but comfortable look and feel, with beautiful views of the coast line and ocean. Service was excellent, the food was cooked and plated beautifully, and we had a wonderful dining experience.
Yes, it is quite expensive. However, especially if you are going for a special occasion, it is well worth the price of admission.
Absolutely amazing all around
We had been to Post Ranch for dinner 20 years ago when we stayed there for our anniversary. The view has not changed- it is as stunning as ever! The floor to ceiling glass windows, the breathtaking vistas, all the same. It feels as if you are on the edge of the world! The bar now has several outside tables. We came for lunch this time with a couple friends from Seattle. They were blown away! Our server, Rachel, was wonderful. She was very friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu as well as the wines & cocktails. The food (prix fixe 3 course meal) presentation was stunning- with colorful edible flowers, lovely sauces, interesting herbs, delicious combinations of flavors. However, our empty plates sat just a little too long, and the food servers gave our food to the wrong person 2 out of 3 times. We also missed the Annie Glass dishes; but we will definitely be back, and it will be sooner than 20 years! It is an incredible way to spend an afternoon in Big Sur!
The food was outstanding & our server was very knowledgeable & attentive. Plus the view is spectacular. Overall it was an excellent experience.
That was possibly the best food and the best dining experience I’ve ever had. Everything was perfect. The Big Sur Fog drink was elaborately prepared at the table and was excellent. All four courses of the meal were perfect and delicious.
We had such high expectations for this restaurant, given its easily a $400 dinner between two people and is hailed as one of the best restaurants in the world. The service and atmosphere were fantastic - a very unique and artistic experience - But the food really fell flat. Just average in taste, and too small of portions, though it was beautiful to look at. For us it just wasn’t worth the spend.
Don’t believe the dress code... everyone is casual.
The view and service are amazing. The food are just okay.
Service is excellent and food is underwhelming.
Wonderful food. There are exclusively great choices on the menu. One dish better than the next. The view may just be the best view in California.
