Super-good experience for New Years Eve dinner. The two corner, window tables offer an awesome view outside onto the covered & heated outdoor table area along with the entire inside portion of the restaurant, so try to get one of these.
The food is very tasty & well prepared with attention to detail.
They called us as we were pulling up 1 min past our reservation (thus we had 14 more min to arrive) and said we can't accept your reservation, after we drive all the way out there from Buellton. We dined there the next night ( I know, I know) and had to send my steak back twice (ordered med rare and it was solid brown) then it came out all cold and bloody.
With that said, once the steak was corrected, it was good, and the other dishes were good.
The location is not for everyone, but if you like small towns, farm to table vibe eating here - in Los Olivos is general will be a treat, if you show up well before your reservation and clarify how you want your meat/meal prepared. :-)
Really enjoyed the food at Sides, we had pork belly tacos, amazing Brussel Sprouts, butternut squash soap and burgers. Everyone was raving. The portions are pretty big so order accordingly, I originally ordered the hammered pig salad and changed it to the soup because the tacos and sprouts were very filling.
Sorry to say, Sides just isn't what it used to be. The last two times I've been there (we are local), the food has been mediocre. It was deathly quiet both times, once a Saturday night. You would think they could at least put some music on so you can't hear every word the table nearest you is saying. So disappointing, because this used to be a real go-to fun spot, both for us and for guests who come to town. I know they changed chefs recently, maybe that's the reason. The patio is lovely for warm nights, but I probably won't be back for a while.
We are locals and eat at Sides regularly. We went last night specifically for the fish tacos. When we order we were told no albacore, but they can make them with halibut so we said yes. We ordered martinis, 1 gin 1 vodka. The vodka was supposed to be Hangar 1 plain; the drink tasted off and I commented to the server who insisted it was Hanger 1. A little while later the bartender comes over with a new drink: she'd made the original with Hangar Mandarin. This was error #1.
We ask for some bread, which takes over 30 min to arrive. Error #2.
After finishing the cocktails we want to order wine, but can't for 50 min - no one inquires.
My salad arrives, but no tacos for my wife. We wait a while and I start eating my salad. The server comes over to say the last of the halibut was gone - so no tacos. Error #3. By this time my main has also arrived (before finishing the salad). Error #4. I will not eat unless everyone at the table has their entrees - this is simple good manners. So we wait until her main arrives and I eat my now cold meat.
Undoubtedly our worst experience at Sides. They weren't busy: it was a Sunday evening and there no more than 5 other groups there. And the servers 'comp' of 1 glass of wine was laughable.
We will return, but likely check ahead of time to see if they have what we want.
Second time dining here for DINNER because my first experience was great all-around. We're also in Los Olivos all the time so why not?!
What went wrong? The menu this time around (mid-Oct 2017) was uninspiring. There were only 3-4 entree options, so I opted for a burger because nothing else sounded amazing or unique. There was a hanger steak option, salmon, and pasta option...that was it.
A friend ordered her steak medium rare. The meat came out cold and looking freshly butchered...I'd be surprised if that thing saw 10 seconds of heat. The "sides" were lackluster and common. The food also TOOK FOREVER to reach the table and it didn't seem that busy...no more than usual.
The wine list left something to be desired and the prices were high for second-tier labels. The staff seemed a little novice as well, but no real complaints from a service standpoint. The butternut squash soup was good though. Probably will not return or recommend to friends any longer. Too bad, because there's only 1 or 2 dining options in Los Olivos.
Hadn't been to Sides for awhile and we were happy to be back. Love the more casual all day menu changes and the diver scallops never disappoint! The menu now has a broader appeal, it seems, whether you want a lighter snack or a full meal. Our group chose a bacon grilled cheese, an order of those scallops, the albacore tacos and a few different salads...and we shared the yummy Brussels sprouts. Mmm, the fig cake was fab, too! Thanks for the attentive but unfussy service!
We go to Sides every time we visit the Santa Ynez valley and win area. Great place for lunch....
The burgers are large and most have a big piece of awesome pork belly on them. Great to split with a side of tasty roasted brussel sprouts or other goodies. Never had a bad meal
I don't know why I keep coming back here, but the dishes are certainly upscale compared to anything in Los Olivos. It's really too bad that out of my 4-5 dinners here over the past couple of years, the dishes have been consistently way too salty. Not a little bit of extra salt, but they take the "salt at every step of preparation" literally. It's so much so, that I couldn't finish the steak frites tonight. I am not someone who shies on extra salt, so this is unfortunately exceptionally overdone, and it ends up killing the dish for me. As I wrote above, it's been the same issue every time I've eaten here, bit I keep coming back because I'd really like them to do well.
This is a local restaurant that we have always enjoyed. We brought some friends with us for dinner. We have not been there for a while and found the menu choices have decreased and was what were used to for the lunch menu. This is not what was on the website prior to Labor day when we made the reservation.
The 4 dinner options were printed on a 3" x 4" piece of paper that came with one of the menus. We received one of those for 4 of us. If you are going to print dinner options, at least provide one for each person.
We all finally ordered and asked for an order of sweet potato fries for the table. That is when things start going a little off.
First the waitress came back after taking the order to tell one of us that the Albacore (Taco plate) was not available. She did have a couple of fish options of which one was chosen. She also provided a free glass of wine to make up for the situation.
Then the food came out and it was excellent, but we did not receive the sweet potatoes. After about 10 minutes of trying to get someones attention we finally flagged down the waitress (there was only one other table being served at the time but the waitress was not to be found). She managed to get the potatoes to us in short order.
I think the food is very good and would make a great lunch spot but I would not recommend it for dinner.
