About SIDECAR at P.J. Clarke's
SIDECAR is PJ Clarke's handsome semi-private upstairs dining room. The birthplace of Patrick Joseph Clarke himself, for 50 years, it was a musty antiques office. Now, its wood beamed ceiling, exposed brick walls hung with fine art, and long seemingly endless space welcomes diners to one of Manhattan's most intimate dining rooms. You enter Sidecar through a special entrance on East 55th Street. The menu, prepared in Sidecar’s own kitchen, is Steaks, Chops, Seafood and Raw Bar. Whether seated on the long banquets that run the entire length of the room, or at a table on the main floor, it immediately envelopes one in a unique sense of clubby comfort. An extensive wine collection, personal attention and the quiet calm of a unique refuge complete the experience.

SIDECAR at P.J. Clarke's Ratings and Reviews
I DON'T LIKE LEAVING A BAD REVIEW... Let alone 2! But lunch at the Sidecar; dinner at its Lincoln Center sister... both expensively bad.
$27 waygu beef burgers ordered rare-medium rare delivered medium well and tough as though precooked and reheated. How could PJ Clarke's screw up a signature dish?
French fries ordered burned crisp arrived soggy, limp and drenched in salt! Sent back both times until they got it right.
Plenty of places to go for a $70 meal where they care... and will get it right the first time! BUT to be fair, the place was packed at both locations...
Service was amateurish. Very tight seating. Party next to us was seated 5 minutes after we were and was drinking and enjoying some bread before the same waiter bothered to greet us. Served food without silverware and plates... had to wait. Food was good... shrimp cocktail and burger ... and eventually service improved a bit, but training is probably a bit lacking.
My grandparents ate here probably 100 years ago. Their creamed spinach reminds me of my Irish grandmothers rendition. Not to be missed. Our server, Stephanie, was a beacon of light and really well versed on the menu at the same time. There are a zillion steak houses in NYC, but this one was special. The crab cake was exceptional, the garlic butter fries (don't tell our cardiologist son) was decadent and the rib eye steak was cooked to perfection and checked on immediately by staff to make sure. Wonderful comfort oasis.
The burgers and oysters were excellent. I had a great Old Fashioned drink. Very attentive service. Somewhat noisy, but manageable for real conversation. Nice ambiance. Restaurant somewhat dimly lit, making it challenging to read the menus for some at a neighboring table. I'd go back again!
The staff was welcoming as we arrived and remained attentive all evening. Our server was helpful in what to order and the food was delicious! The crab cakes were a favorite as was the enormous piece of chocolate cake we shared. The restaurant can be loud due to groups (mostly business dinners) and the exposed bricks but not a deal-breaker. Plus we did not feel rushed. We plan to go back!
I love this place. And go back over and over again because the food is delicious and the service is amiable and responsive. And the noise level is such that you can barely call it a noise level. Which means you can have a nice conversation over dinner as well. What more can you ask from a restaurant? As I said when I started out I love this place. And whenever we’re in New York we eat there.
This place is a bit hidden...go through the door and up the steps under the SIDECAR sign, even though it seems wrong. You then enter a lovely space with brick walls and wooden ceilings. Loved it and the food was excellent. Seating is a little tight and, it took a little to get our waitress for a second soda but, overall, someplace I will return. Perhaps I will try it next with friends/family!
First time at this restaurant and I would definitely add to my favorites list. I liked the room layout, and despite a part of 20 plus next to us it wasn't loud at all in room. Server was knowledgeable, friendly and efficient. . Based on her recommendations for 'what we are known for' which was fish daily specials and high quality steaks, I ordered the monkfish special with carrot puree and okra. It was delicious! Appetizer of avocado on toast was tasty with firm, freshly cut slices. The bread pudding with vanilla ice cream (huge so need to share) was sinfully good and worth the penance. Will be back.
My kind of place! Historic surroundings that are authentic and warm, serving really good approachable, understandable, and tasty food, nice menu with plenty of choices, and presto--a dining experience. Add to that a truly welcoming management and we go back again and again. It's all about the guest!!! Been there more than once, and will go there again and again.
Crabcakes with corn salad were fantastic--dessert was blueberry cobbler. Super yum. My husband had the oysters and mahi tacos. Perfect. Two happy people.
Been to Sidecar several times and have always been pleased with the food. This time that wasn't the case. The clam chowder was a bit salty and the seared tuna salad was a major disappointment. The dressing was very oily and bland. The marinated peppers and olives totally overpowered the other ingredients. Don't order it.
I was on a business lunch, staff kept coming over every 2-5 minutes to ask if one of the people in out party was done with their meal. It got to the point that he was being asked so frequently (at least 8 times) he said yes so they would stop coming over, interrupting our conversations and rushing us out of the restaurant.
We took a friend here who was laid off from his job of 25 years. It was a Club very close to the restaurant. The reservation was made with this in mind, and also with the fact that the owner was a member of the Club. No acknowledgement from anyone including staff, management or the owner. The meal and service were fine. Will probably still return.
Great experience - Heather our server was professional, knowledgeable and very personable. There was an amazing new dish added to the menu - summer picnic chicken that was outstanding - fresh, flavorful and delicious. Kudos to the head chef Tim, sous chef Pony and Jerome. Yummy, yummy, yummy!
The manager Melissa visited the table at the end to ask about our experience and she was very attentive.
I will definitely be back to this gem of a dining room.
