Shula's 347 Grill - Hotel Duval Tallahassee Ratings and Reviews
This was among the better experiences that we have had dining at Shula's. Minus one error in serving sides--which could have been a kitchen error or a service error--the service was quite competent. The best entree was the filet medallions, cooked exactly as requested. My wife loved her drink; my white sangria was not as good as on prior visits. The birthday cheesecake with a candle is always appreciated for a birthday dinner.
Very good but for the price and the setting we were a bit surprised at some little things that wern’t perfect. Would be awesome for a lesser restaurant but we just expected perfect and it wasn’t .
Even with reservations, we were seated unspectacularly in the middle of the room. To be fair, I didn’t see many tables or booths that lent themselves to a quiet intimate dinner.
After ordering appetizers, we were told the lobster appetizer was not available. When I said, “no lobster?”, we were told yes, there was another lobster but not the one that went with the appetizer. I asked if we could have that one with the appetizer and I’d pay the difference. The lobster was brought without the other appetizer items. When we asked for them, they were happily brought but was charged for all- over $50 just for the appetizer. And according to my significant other, the lobster was over cooked .
Also- never got a lobster fork.
And we had to ask for pepper. Most places I’ve been to, ground pepper is offered as soon as the meal comes out.
None of these things was a deal breaker- the rest of the food and service were good. It’s just that for the place and the price, we expected great and got- something less.
The whole experience from start to finish was wonderful. My only critique would be the noise level because of a large party that was seated close by (fifteenish people). It would be nice if all large parties were held in a separate room to keep the romantic atmosphere in tact.
The food was mediocre for the price charged. The noise level was so great I was unable to converse with my old friend who I'd come to visit. He ordered the steak which he said was excellently grilled - perfect. My scallops were cooked properly, but the sear wasn't anything to crow about. Risotto cooked perfectly, but bland. Burre blanc lacked that tart hit that makes it sing.
All in all, the food was uninspired and overpriced. Cocktails weren't worth the cost at all. I'm used to more chef focused inspiration in Denver. This place needs to step up. Lord knows, you're charging the dough to do that.
My husband and I drove up from Sarasota to take our son out for his 19th Birthday! It was a great evening! Our waiter was absolutely fantastic! I brought a homemade dessert that I always make my son on his Birthday and they were super accommodating with serving it and wrapping up leftovers! My son enjoyed the ribeye special. No leftovers of that ;-) Thank you for a great night!
Overall Shula’s was a bit disappointing especially considering the bill. We arrived about 5:45p on a Sunday, and despite the restaurant being almost empty, were initially seated at a table rather than booth. When we asked for a booth, we were accommodated. After enjoying “calamari fries” appetizer my friend ordered one of their steaks, and I ordered the crab cakes. Both dishes came with their seasonal vegetables, fairly boring and slightly over cooked broccoli, carrots and cauliflower. I immediately noticed that my crab cakes were not warm and asked that they take them back to the Kitchen and heat them. My friends steak was cooked just right, and he enjoyed it, saying it was “good” though not on par with other steak houses he’s frequented - “good but not great” for $40. My $33 crab cakes came back, warm this time, and I managed to eat one of the two, but remained disappointed with my menu choice. They just didn’t taste that fresh, or flavorful. Certainly not on par with any decent seafood place. The one outstanding feature of the meal was the price, which in our view was quite high for the value. I don’t have a problem paying such a price for a great meal. Sadly this was not.
Great food and everything as always, but for a sports theme type of place ("Shula's") the TV playing sports is so small and mounted over a door way, that it was odd to try and get a sports feel. Does not need to be a sportbar, but if you ever go, you'll see that the one TV is oddly small and placed.
Shula's was well worth the trip, the steaks were tende and full of flavor. The service was top notch, our waiter was very attentive to our needs and made sure we had everything we needed. I would recommend Shula's to anyone celebrating an anniversary, special occasion, or wanting a good steak.
We went to celebrate our anniversary and wanted someplace special. We'd never been there before but saw the menu online and were impressed. The actual dining experience exceeded our expectations, from the very efficient and helpful valets to our fantastic waiter Jeremiah/Joe! The food was great and we could even hear each other talk without shouting...great atmosphere for a romantic date or business gathering.
