Shockingly bad. Typical of Wall Street ownership. The chefs' conceptions were banal, particularly compared to when the two were at Neta. The produce was less than in peak condition. The pieces of sushi were too small to savor. Someone, Gottesman I guess, put the brakes on. We all felt violated. Our $1400. should be given UNICEF. Please make a donation in our behalf, Noam

Quite unassuming from the outside, but when as soon as you step in, you know you're in very good hands. Service was excellent, I've never seen such a small staff to guest ratio....they don't miss a beat when it comes to making sure you have everything you need during your meal. The ambience is certainly not a traditional Japanese setting, it's pretty upbeat and doesn't feel too serious or formal. The FOOD however, they take very seriously in all the right ways. The preparation, presentation, and explanation of each component of the omakase was spot on...plus the chef was quite friendly and happy to chat about his work. Half the fun was just learning all sorts of new ideas from him! All in all, a highly memorable dining experience in New York City. As a solo diner from out of town, this was a very worthwhile visit; but you definitely have to be ready to pay for it!

This was my second time at Shuko and the second time exceeded my already high expectations based on a memorable meal there last year. The restaurant is intimate -- all diners are seated at the bar - and you watch your sushi and other dishes prepared before you with the utmost of care and precision. The decor is beautiful - gorgeous wood bar and an environment that is designed to showcase the food. The service is attentive, unobtrusive, and everyone is there to make sure you are enjoying every moment and every morsel. The sushi and kaiseki (small dishes) are fabulous - delights of taste, texture and flavors. Terrific sake list as well. It is expensive but given the nearly three-hour typical dinner and the quality and care lavished on the meal and on the diners, it seems justified.

Nothing special and extremely expensive for what you get. Quantity of sushi was fine, but few of the pieces showed specialty ingredients or skill. Nothing was particularly memorable. They push a series of specials on top of their already super expensive omakase ranging from 20-50$ a bite. Which leave you feeling either like you missed out on the good stuff or you got especially ripped off. Staff was nice but kinda stiff and impersonal. The place was boring. One or two courses were so basic they were almost insulting at this price level.

extraordinary sushi. you can get pristine fish at places like gavi, but without the imagination or individual tailoring of dishes to your palette. and the service and atmosphere are up to the standards of per se. (or what per se was like at it's best.) sommelier is on top of his game and has a great selection of sakes. dinner for three came to 800, including 20% tip two drinks each. .

    - we got the sushi chef at the far end, and his mounds of sushi rice, the most important part of sushi, were miniscule, even after a request for larger ones. So small that the sushi itself sometimes touched the plate all around. The rest of the food and wine was great, though.

Visited all the top japanese restaurants in NYC. Found shuko to be average at best. Food although innovative lacked structure and a sense of direction. Quality of the fish was decent, but was expecting it to be outstanding given the price and the rave reviews. Service was great, but was only thing positive about the experience.

Most expensive meal ever, but incredibly good. The selection of wines and sakes included a Riesling unlike any I have ever tasted. Some presentations were "spicy" but not in a way that overwhelmed. Our sushi chef was a real pleasure to watch as our Omakase was almost all sushi. the amuse bouche at the beginning had a small bite of mochi with miso. The mocha was not the gummy chewy mastic like stuff I've had before. It was worth it as a celebration of my wife's birthday and she loved it.

If like me, you are an out of towner with an early reservation, be warned that they are too cool for signs. The door opens at 5:30, and not a moment before and if you arrive early you will stare at a large black door with the number 47 next to it. When the door opens, the hostess will seat you at a bar that accommodates a bit over 20 and she will turn you over to a very good and helpful team of servers. Two fixed tasting menus are the only alternatives. One is large and one is smaller. They alsohave daily special items that can be added to the meal. The very good sommelier will also offer spirit pairings for your dishes. Her selections for my meal were great. If you are having the larger tasting menu, no cocktails, there will be plenty of alcohol served (cabbing it or walking will also be necessary 😉). The waiters, chefs, sommelier and rest of the serving staff spring into action as the meals are being served, carefully explaining each dish and how it is best enjoyed. The sushi is last and is meant to be handled with your hands. It is expensive, the larger tasting menu and spirit pairings will cost $300. But it is well worth the price for what was one of the best dining experiences I have ever had.

Food was great, as it should be for $175 per person before drinks. Courses were meticulous, food presentation spot on. Kaiseki way too much food, so if you go this route, you'd better be hungry. The dessert did not fit in at all..apple pie with ice cream? After 17 pieces of sushi and 8 courses of composed dishes, the meal ended on a flat note. The service was shockingly poor especially with more wait staff than diners. We had 1 gluten allergy and 1 lactose issue at the table, which they worked around in all courses but the last. Serving 4 of the 5 people a dessert, looking at the last person, and saying 'SORRY' and walking away was borderline insulting. He could have offered a glass of wine or a drink at least. I do not recommend...there are better experiences to be had for less at other high end sushi spots.

Very impressed by the quality of the food and the innovative / surprise factor of what was offered. Both co-owner chefs prepare the food behind the bar and explain to you as they serve; often preparing each piece of nigiri sushi at a time. The Kaiseki menu is the most expensive option but didn't disappoint and the quantity of food was plenty. Chef Jimmy was genuinely friendly and chatty. The key is both chefs are not afraid of departing from more traditional sushi cuisine, experimenting with combinations of curry and other ingredients. For the seared toro a red hot ember was brought to Chef Jimmy. He explained that using a torch doesn’t give the fish a good flavour almost allowing you to ‘taste the gas’. I have tried top boutique sushi venues in Tokyo, such as Mizutani and Hashiguchi, I think this place is at the same level (although Japanese purists might disagree). You won’t get it without a reservation, the entrance doesn’t even have a name (is just a plain door). The ambience in general OK although the music was at times too ‘cutting edge’ for my taste with some lyrics featuring the ‘n’ word and that kind of thing.

Shuko lands in an awkward interstitial domain of NYC's Japanese restaurant landscape. They lack the relentless perfection of New York Sushi Ko and Sushi Nakazawa, their peers in price-range, but they're more ambitious (or pretentious) than Sushi Dojo or Sushi Yasuda. All things being equal, the savvy dinner would forego Shuko and either save money at Dojo or enjoy true excellence at NYSK.
