Japanese cuisine is easily one of the healthiest on Earth, with its concentration on fresh fish, seafood, meats, vegetables and rice. The zesty sauces and delicate flavors of fresh foods compliment each other beautifully, and the methods of presentation turn even simple meals into ornate, eye-pleasing events. The Japanese love of beauty and simplicity turns slices of fish into miniature artworks, turning the platter into paint palettes for the artistry of the chef. Here, at Shuhei, traditional ways of creating dishes and preparing foods are far from lost. Authentic, high-quality and extensive Japanese fare is the highlight of the restaurant complete with affordable prices, relaxing atmosphere, kimono-clad waitresses who go the extra mile to make you smile and "the best sushi this side of Tokyo" according to ZAGAT Survey 2008!

Shuhei Ratings and Reviews
Though located in the back of a nondescript office building on Chagrin Boulevard Shuhei is not to be missed if you enjoy sushi. Though the ambiance is nothing to write about the food and service are excellent. From the first few minutes when the waitstaff brings you a warmed washcloth to clean your hands to the friendly smile upon your departure, Shuhei is definitely worth the drive.
Food was quite tasty. Place was packed and our servers seemed to be confused as to who had our table...took quite a while to have our orders taken, then longer to actually be served. Bizarrely, mid-meal, another server came by and asked the name of the dish my friend was eating....since when do wait-staff not know the names of standard offerings? Despite the bizarre dining this time, I would go back, but know that you can't get in and get out as quickly as you might like.
After checking Open Table for nearby open reservations within the hour, we chose Shuhei. When we arrived we were told there was a wait and ended up waiting 20 minutes past the time of our reservation. There were a number of folks waiting who also had reservations, so it appeared they were more interested in bringing in customers to wait rather than offering accurate reservation times. When we were finally seated we quickly placed an order for fried dumplings and our waitress kept promising to come back and take the rest of our order. After several attempts, we finally ordered three rolls. The dumplings came steamed, not fried. We ate them and they were fine, if not what we ordered. Despite repeated promises that our food was almost ready, the waitress brought the three rolls ordered by the table next to us that had been seated well after we were. She was all apologies, but we let her know we were getting frustrated. She explained (1) that the other table's rolls were much simpler and (2) they had a lot of take-out orders they had to get done. Neither explanation was a good reason to make us wait over 50 minutes to get 3 rolls. After she finally brought our rolls a manager or owner stopped by and again blamed the fact that the three rolls were complicated (poor excuse) and said only 2 of his 4 sushi chefs had shown up (slightly more understandable excuse). He said they would provide us a dessert for our troubles. We thanked him. The rolls ok, but not as good as Pacific East or Wasabi. The dessert was a mediocre chocolate espresso cake, but a nice gesture. After more waiting we finally got our bill, paid it and left. As we were backing out of our parking space the waitress came flying out to the car to tell us she had given us the wrong bill and that she was going to have to pay the difference. The evening had finally reached full comic levels. We paid her the difference with tip in cash. She then said she hoped we would come back. We won't.
This place has been around many years and I used to come with my friends and coworkers all the time. I went with friends Saturday night and the food was just OK. Two of my friends had the grouper special and said it was bland
. I has tempura and it had too much batter and not much flavor. Maybe it was a different cook because definitely not the quality I've been used to.
Shuhei has potentially the best sushi in the greater Cleveland area. It's flavorful and there are plenty of options for everyone! The staff is fantastic and the atmosphere is cozy and inviting! I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for good sushi!
This was disappointing. We were seated promptly and our drinks came very quickly. However, we didn't see our waitress for the next 30 minutes. She finally came over, apologized and took out order without ever reviewing the specials which we later heard at the table next to us. The Shitake mushroom appetizer was bland and mushy. Thankfully the sushi was pretty good, but overall we were not impressed.
We had not been to Shuhei in many years and decided to give a try. We were afraid that maybe it wasn't as good as it used to be. We needed to not have worried. This place did a wonderful job and the food was top notch. The service is formal, but attentive. Everything was delicious!
Made a reservation but didn't need to for our early arrival. Restaurant was not busy yet but by 6:30 it was filling up. Service gets slower as they become busier. Chi took care of us and she is awesome! Super friendly and full of recommendations. Nice selection of wine by the glass. Sushi is excellent! Fish is very fresh and there are lots of creative rolls.
Consistently high quality. Relaxed and comfortable, Shuhei is my first choice for sushi, sashimi and other Japanese cuisine. Not at all a chop chop showy group seating pseudo eatery. Shuhei does everything on the menu beautifully. Tempura items are expertly prepared, noodle dishes are filling and delicious and sushi /sashimi is mouth watering. . Try anything on the menu. You'll be hooked.
We first ate at Shuhei 27 years ago and had always liked it, but this time we were disappointed. The sauces for the Squid and vegetables in spicy hot chile sauce and for the Stir-fried shrimp and vegetables in ginger scream sauce were both tasteless, as if the chef couldn't be bothered to prepare the dishes properly.
