About Permanently Closed - Shuga Jazz Bistro

This restaurant is permanently closed.

Shuga Jazz Bistro provides those in the Renton, Washington area with a place to go for jazz entertainment and great food. The atmosphere is upscale yet comfortable making it ideal for enjoying the classic Southern cuisine. Shuga Jazz Bistro gets its name from the cute pet name the owners grandmother used when her grandchildren came to visit. A huge hug for each Shuga is a fond memory that was worth memorializing.

The menu at Shuga Jazz Bistro is another way to show respect for the southern hospitality, with items such as shrimp and grits, Lula Maes fried chicken, collard greens and candied yams. The fried catfish, which is available as a meal or a sandwich, is a house specialty.

Shuga Jazz Bistro was closed without informing Open Table. It was very unfortunate to arrive, find parking and then find out. Hopefully in the future they can shut down online reservations when the restaurant does not plan to be opened.

In the above RECOMMEND list you don't list great place for DINNER. IT WAS A GREAT DINNER. WE CAME FOR THE FRIENDS AND THE ANDY STOKES MUSIC BUT WE WERE MOST IMPRESSED WITH THE STEAK AND CHICKEN DINNERS!!!! We'd come back again just for the dinner. By the way, your message page does not seem to recognize the space bar.
PEACE.

Shugas is a great way to keep live jazz alive. Easy to get to, and a very friendly atmosphere. Rob is making great efforts to provide a live music scene, and we need to support his efforts by coming out and enjoying the wonderful dinning experience Shugas provides. Very talented musicians and very personal contact available with these masters of jazz.

Had a wonderful relaxing dinner. The prime rib and braised oxtail are both delicious choices. Next time I'll try the shrimp and grits. Shuga Jazz Bistro is on my "keeper" list! The staff was exceptional as we were quite early and had a great time chatting with them too!

Your strength is the great food (although pricy, fried chicken $22), your friendliness, comfortable seats, and music. The band was OK but the girls were full of themselves. Great groups are humble and give you music better than they lead on, if you know what I mean. We didn't stay for the entire time, and I certainly don't know all the popular R and B songs, but only a couple of songs were familiar. I was waiting for Heard it Through the Grapevine.
But, Shugas has great potential. I see it filling up, as it probably does on Jazz night.
I recommend you produce one or two signature dishes (e.g., fried chicken or salmon) that are so good, people will come just for that.

I enjoy having a local place to go and enjoy good jazz music and good food. Nice atmosphere, although Ido prefer a non dancing club for jazz and more of quiet sit down atmosphere where you can just listen and enjoy the artist performing and keeping conversation at a low intimate level. I definitely recommend Shugas for a nice evening out! Also very nice staff!

My wife and I celebrated our 36th wedding anniversary at Shuga's on 18 June - and I am SO glad we did!! Great ambiance, attentive and friendly service, good ambiance, super delicious food, a very good wine & cocktail selection, and top notch live jazz entertainment! The place and it's owners have class - during the evening they stopped by each table and thanked the patrons for stopping in - great touch! :) We will definitely be going back to this jewel in Renton!

Rochelle was nice, took care of our undercooked steak. She was professional and courteous. Nancy, our server was nice, too. Food had good flavor; NY Steak had a bit too much gristle. Braised oxtail and green were delicious. Peach cobbler came out luke warm, not hot.

Terrible service. It took 45 minutes to get the appetizer despite telling the waitress we had only one hour to eat. After we'd sent the bus boy to find our waitress two times, we finally told her we have to leave. She said shall I bring boxes to the table when I bring your plates? Food was okay but we will not return.

Can't believe I had missed this treasure in Renton. The food and service were wonderful, and the jazz was spectacular. Jeff Kashiwa was not a surprise-excellent as usual, but the new voice I had not heard was Josephine Howell. That lady can SING. My yearly concert budget is about to explode because Shugas has made a bistro that is well worth being a regular at. No need to fight the traffic going to downtown Seattle for good jazz when we have such a treasure right here in the south-end.

Under staffed. Person at front desk was checking people in, taking payment, and answering the phone. I was solo and and was told they save the tables for couples. Had to sit at the bar. Food over priced. Cocktails over priced. Very limited wine list, also over priced. Had to ask for bill.

Won't go back. Won't recommend.

The parking lot is city owned and was full when I arrived (7:20 for 8:30 show). Found parking 3 blocks away.

Paid $15. to see Jeff Kashiwa. Would rather pay $35. to see him at Jazz Alley; excellent service, excellent food, excellent value, excellent wine list, and convenient parking.

This place was on our list to try. Jazz and southern food. It's a great combination. The place is just the right size. Show was really good and only $15 cover. Food was ok. We shared the fried chicken for appetizers, they were good. The deviled eggs were bland. I had grits and shrimp for my entree. I make better grits. My husband had the fried cat fish which he liked and our friends had the gumbo, they really liked. Even though the food was ok I would go back. I think it's a great venue for down town Renton and I'm willing to give the food another try.

I really loved the show with Jeff Kashiwa and Josephine Howell. The food was absolutely wonderful and I can't wait to go again. The servers were attentive and very polite and professional. The only complaint I have is that I hope that the audience will be admonished to keep talking to an intimate level while the artist are performing and this will show respect for the Artists as well as the part of the audience that would like to enjoy the performance. People were literally talking out loud and it was very annoying and I thought it took away from the show and the atmosphere.

Surprisingly discovered the BEST Shrimp & Grits entree anywhere.

This venue is to be applauded for their dedicated support of local jazz culture, but I was pleasantly surprised with artfully crafted food as well.

We like the fried chicken at Shuga mainly because it is gluten-free and I'm allergic to wheat. But the thing to know about Shuga if you have gluten-issues or a wheat allergy is that while many items are marked gluten-free, the corn bread is no longer (though this is not specified on the menu). The former manager told me not to eat it for that reason (said it was when they first opened but people complained the corn bread was too heavy and dry so now they add regular flour to the mix).

The service here is always friendly. The wine list isn't always up to date but there's always wine from which to choose. The food is always fresh and delicious. We like coming here. The shrimp and grits are good, too, as are the bacon wrapped prawns served over collard greens for the appetizer.

Passed by several times driving through the area and recently had an impromptu dinner with my sister for an early birthday celebration. We are both into music and the show was lovely. The drink menu was awesome. I had a drink called "Georgia On My Mind" that was so good. Food was good and the crowd was fun.

Saw local jazz greats on Sunday evening (1st time) and plan to return soon! We ordered dinner and took one to go because the food was fabulous southern cooking. Rave reviews from nearby diners, too. Check out BBQ ribs, fried chicken (served with delicious collard greens and sweet potatoes), steak, catfish and chips (served with jicama slaw!). Nice wines by the glass. Lots of space (get up and dance!). Great venue.

As usual, the food was good and perfect for gluten free patrons since there is actually a variety. Music was phenomenal but the service was bad. The waitress came up to us initially in a reasonable amount of time but then we saw her hours later way after we finished our dinner. She never came back to ask how things were, if we wanted another drink or dessert. I finally asked another waitress for a drink but an hour later it showed up with an apology. This was not the usual service after a year of coming here so hopefully just a bad night.

We were pleasantly surprised!!!
A friend in one of the bands asked us to watch him play and we had never been here before. The food was pretty good. I had the fried catfish and chips. My husband the fried chicken.. The bacon wrapped Sprimp appitizer was really good as well!
Our waitress was so friendly and sweet.
We listened to a jazz songstress and then Marcus Johnson on keyboards with Jeff Kashiwa on sax... What a night! We will be back in June when Marcus returns!!!

What a great place to see a fantastic jazz artist's. The music was the absolute best with Josephine Howell starting the night off in grand style. Marcus Johnson and Jeff Kashiwa picked up afterwards and killed it. My wife and I saw many friends and a former student who performs in the area greeted us. The food was halfway there. My steak was amazing and especially for the price but my wife's cat fish was not quite done. Drinks are fare and the service is nice but a little forgetful. Will we go back, heck yes!
