Shokudo - Honolulu Ratings and Reviews
The food was okay for Japanese food. Shokudo does not serve authentic Japanese, more local style preparation and taste; however, the value is good for the price and amount of food given. The server, Bob, was efficient and courteous. I recommend this restaurant for groups having lunch together.
Disappointing. After dining here over the years, our experience this time was not what we expected.
The service was outstanding but didn't make up for the food. Not sure what has changed but the sushi pizza and the garlic shrimp rice bowl were both flavorless.
The hot fudge honey toast is one reason we always visit Shokudo when in town. This year the "hot" fudge was just a clump of cold chocolate sitting to the side of the ice cream.
Hopefully they will get back to their earlier standards.
We come here a lot and for some reason the food is not consistent. Don't get me wrong, the food is good, but it's not always the same level of goodness. We ordered the red eye roll, chicken katsu, hot udon, agedashi tofu. The red eye roll didn't have the sweet soy on the ahi, it had it last time and it's supposed to have it, but it's not consistent. The katsu was ok, a little dry and tough but last time it was juicy and soft. The hot udon was good, we like the broth. The tofu was also good. It's just not consistent and I don't know why.
The restaurant was hot too. Last time we came the AC was broken so that was understandable why it was hot, but it was still hot. The last time we came was probably about a month or so ago. You'd figure they would fix it by now.
The receptionist seemed lost too, like she didn't know what tables were open or not, and she kept walking around the whole time we were there, like she had nothing better to do.
Not sure if this place is going down hill, I hope not, I enjoy eating here. Hope the next time we go it's back to the level we're used to.
I still like this restaurant, the service, ambiance and prices are all really good to great, however I gave it a 3 star rating for the food. They've changed their menu since I last visited and found that many of the favorites we enjoyed are no longer available. Most notable of the missing dishes were the ribeye steak and the wasabi mashed potatoes (it was standard with the teriyaki salmon). The mashed potatoes were replaced with a butter rice (looks like fried rice). Given the choice I'd opt for the wasabi mashed potatoes.
Another item MIA is the lychee mojito made with shochu. Perhaps not a Japanese traditional drink, but one that we enjoyed.
All in all the food was good and the service excellent. However our missing favorites may give us pause to consider another venue when looking for a good Japanese restaurant.
This place was awesome it was my daughter and I's first time there. She wanted to go for her birthday. The food tasted great and we didn't wait long at all. I recommend the honey toast for sure it was so good. The customer service was great, everyone was friendly and our empty plates didn't stay on our table long. I highly recommend this place to anyone who loves sushi!
Having been to Shokudo several times prior, we had a good idea of the food offering and ambiance. We made an early reservation on Sunday at 4:00 pm so that it would give us enough time to relax and enjoy an early dinner among friends. At 6:00 we were told by the hostess that they had a 2 hour time limit for reservations made online (Open Table) and while she wasn't rushing us to leave, the next reservation had arrived and was waiting outside. No mention of a 2 hour time limit was told to us when we sat down or throughout our meal. In fact we had just ordered another round of drinks 10 minutes before 6:00 and were now forced to either guzzle it down or leave them. This really soured our experience and now makes me think twice to book Shokudo again for a group gathering. Very disappointing. Our waiter was very nice, attentive and the food was decent. Just ruined our night being asked to leave at the 2 hour mark. Mind you, there were other tables open and the restaurant was not completely full.
LOUD, LOUD, LOUD but good food and service. There is an eclectic mix of Japanese fusion and everything we tried we enjoyed. We were told the best approach is to try a variety of dishes and to share. The recommendation is spot-on. It is the only way to try everything that the restaurant has to offer. We ordered in waves (ordered a couple of dishes and ate them and then ordered a couple more, etc.). This keeps things manageable (avoiding overconsumption and overspending). The prices were quite reasonable but the restaurant is so loud that it is difficult to carry on a conversation.
The food was delicious! The tofu was rich and creamy. The shrimp tempura was perfectly seasoned and the shrimp fresh and flavorful. The sake list, though priced a bit high, is notable.
Sadly, we were seated at Table 32, which ruined our dining experience. It was as if we were an afterthought, although we'd made the reservation well in advance. The table was situated so that one person was across from a cash register (that was the entire view) and the other person faced down the walkway so we saw people being seated (in better tables) and food plates being cleared and walked toward us. The table was so tiny that we had to put one of our plates of food on the bench between us. It was unforgettable and a very unhappy experience. We'd like to go back but will definitely not go if we have to sit there again.
