Shokudo - Honolulu
Service was okay, food was good but the menu's were very worn and good looking. Haven't been to this restaurant in a while but got the feeling it had gone down in appearance. The menu also looked like the amount of dishes got smaller unless it was because of being lunch.
We enjoyed our dinner here! When we want tempura we head for Shokudo. Does not disappoint!
If we went earlier, we could have taken advantage of your generous Early Bird offerings.
There’s always next time! Tofu salad is one of my fav too!
Location was hard to locate. Greeting could’ve improved dramatically but the food was pretty good and our server was splendid.
What happened to this place? It was not the Shokudo experience I remember... though their happy hour and desserts are not bad - maybe this will just no longer be a "dinner" option.
-Their desserts are still fun and delicious! The Honey Toast is still a fave and the Flambé is still a nice show.
-Parking is still free.
-It started with the menus that the lamination was almost completely peeled back... that was a very poor first impression for a celebratory dinner.
-Then our table's 2/3 drinks were delivered (an Asahi from the bottle and a mixed drink), except I waited until our server came back to take our dinner order to remind him of the Draft Kirin I ordered...
-Finally, we were advised the fryer is "lagging" and our pork chops, Katsu, and tempura was on its way... my nephew at his fries first and then the Katsu came out AND then it wasn't until we all finished eating and ready to order desserts did my mom receive her pork chops.
(Our server was kind enough to explain that there was another table who ordered the pork chops and it mistakenly went there so the kitchen is making hers right away.)
-Not really a "con" but this was just uncomfortable... the super narrow "walkway" between the host stand and the front door- that's a nice squeeze to get in and out of that upper section. Maybe consider making the path larger and/or moving the host outside? But that's just being nit-picky about the overall experience.
-After looking at a photo I took of my Chicken Soba Salad, it could totally be my eyes, but it still looks a little pink.
Food at Shokudo never disappoints! Always came here with my husband for some date nights in the past. Its the first time we brought our kids and they loved everything we ordered. Will definitely be back with my kids soon.
Overall.. it was a decent experience.
The only issue, was the service. Our waitress took a very long time to come over and take our order. It was a slow night from what I remember.
However, we enjoyed the food and company of friends.
We arrived 10 minutes before happy hour ended and were not able to order drinks, as last call for happy hour was apparently 5:45. We ordered four rolls, and each roll had twice as much rice as you typically want in a roll, and half as much fish. For the price, this was certainly the worst sushi dinner we’ve had.
After 6 pm background music very loud and generally with guest coming, very noisy.
Food was delicious with good portions and variety to choose from.
Four friends went to celebrate one of our birthdays mid-afternoon. The menus we were given were tattered, the laminate coating coming off the corners rolling up! Then our miso soup was horribly luke warm! They brought us new bowls that was much better temperature-wise. The tofu salad I have loved over the years was not the same ~ the tofu they used on it was mealy and granular (probably old, left over), compared to the side dish tofu that was included with my bento! Overall I was terribly disappointed with the quality of food; they were once top-notch but I've noticed have steadily deteriorated.
I will not be surprised when this restaurant closes and I will definitely not return, even if someone else is paying the bill because there are so many other restaurants to choose from here in Honolulu. So Sad it has fallen out of grace, but thanks for the earlier great food, Shokudo! Sayonara!
Our server Pono was welcoming and attentive. The food was very ONO as usual. I brought 5 colleagues from different parts of the continent which were their 1st time to Shokudo. They left happy! Then Ryan, as the manager he greeted us warmly with a smile. He recognized that I was a repeat customer. Good experience.
I have reservations for a business lunch back at Shokudo in 3 weeks.
Mahalo, Larry Kekaulike
Family from neighbor islands were visiting
We had a party of 8. Server added the gratuity to the bill ( which is fine ) but didn’t say anything when he dropped the check.
Not sure if anyone saw it on the menu but atleast say something when dropping the check. Or circle it.
Wonderful as always
We go to Shokudo at least once a year for lunch. This time, our server was really excellent! She got us drinks that are usually served only at dinner time and the food that we ordered was sooo good!!! We all enjoyed ourselves!!
Ordered several dishes but the Mochi Cheese, Ume Cucumber salad, Sushi Pizza, and Honey Toast were our favorites. Our server was very good.
Pono our server was great and so was the manager who dealt with a little issue we had. Very professional
Best place to have sushi and the best honey toast dessert
Menus are old and falling apart. The prices are too high for what you get. Sushi use to be good and not anymore. Seems they keep getting different chefs to make sushi.
GROUP OF 5 WENT DURING HAPPY HOUR. FOOD AND DRINK WERE A VERY GOOD VALUE. HOWEVER, AS NOTED BY OTHER ONLINE REVIEWS THE SERVICE WAS NOT CONSISTENT. FOOD ALMOST CAME FASTER THAN SOME OF THE COCKTAILS ORDERED. THE FIRST THING THAT TURNED ALL OF US OFF AND MADE US WARY WERE THE EXTREMELY WORN AND DIRTY MENUS. THE FURNITURE IS WORN AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. INSPITE OF THESE NEGATIVES THE FOOD WAS GOOD AND DRINK WERE A GOOD VALUE. $5 GREY GOOSE MARTINIS.
The food was amazing, as expected!
We loved the dishes, especially the unagi rice and mochi cheese dish. It was a little warm in the restaurant but the food made it worth the trip!
We enjoyed lunch specials at Shokudo, which were reasonably priced, tasty, and plentiful. Although the tattered menus could use some refreshing and the air conditioning didn't seem to work, our party enjoyed the lunch and would return (though maybe not on a hot day).
We went to dinner and the AC was broken. Very uncomfortable, had to eat fast and leave because it was so hot. That might not have been their fault, but when they called to confirm our reservations that afternoon they could have informed us. Felt that was inconsiderate.
No air conditioning in dining area. In this heat? It was hot! They could have at least had fans going. It was not busy and yet they seated us directly between two occupied tables, which made it feel even stuffier and made it noisier. They didn't even acknowledge the absence of air conditioning or attempt to apologize for it.
Food was delicious, service from Shawn was courteous and prompt. My only complaint was that their AC was out s it was warm and stuffy. Otherwise I will return and tell others to go here.
It was okay. The food was not the greatest and the service was okay.
we have entertained friends and family twice this week at shokudo. service is friendly and efficient, food is excellent and reasonably priced. everyone in both parties had never eaten there, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
just a thought - perhaps you could refurbish your menus. they are quite worn and the laminate is peeling off.
we will be dining at shokudo again in the near future! mahalo :)
Awesome experience as always. They updated the menu but it still has everything I enjoy in it.
The honey toast alone is reason to go. The rest of the food is fantastic too though.
Service was very poor and the food mediocre. My reservation did mention a vegan diner, however, our server needed to check with the chef for a substitution. Our party of six was served our meals in a staggered fashion. One of the appetizers came during the meal. One of the diners waited more than 30 minutes after the rest of the group was served; she had ordered a simple bowl of udon. The server seemed to have missed turning in her order.
We always enjoy the food and ambiance here. Their honey toast is the best!
Love the menu never boring!
My favorite is Hamachi Carpaccio and Home made tofu salad :-)
Very interesting menu, lots of outstanding things too choose from!!!
It had been maybe 7years since my last visit. The menu was physically worn beyond its useful life. Like the menu, the items on the menu had not changed since the restaurant first opened. The best dishes were the tofu salad and the bread ala mode dessert. The rest of the meal was sub par last best. The owners have obviously not invested money into maintaining a quality restaurant.
We sat down for lunch when they opened at 11:30 and were greeted right away with menus. We ordered a several items and ate family style.
The tofu salad, shrimp tempura and garlic shrimp rice in hot stone bowl were really tasty.
We were disappointed with the spider roll sushi. After eating 1 piece, we didn’t want anymore. Also the chicken katsu was just okay.
We ended our lunch with the honey toast dessert which we all enjoyed.
The service was very good and the restaurant was quiet enough to talk comfortably.
Excellent food. Trendy upscale ambience. Wonderful service.
Used to be better but now they have less selections, sushi was crumbling, one dish came out really late, couldn’t hear the server, cocktails were mostly ice. Will not be returning.
Business mtg. There was a lot of space and empty tables in the restaurant, but for whatever reason they seated another party right next to us. How strange.
Great food at reasonable prices. Friendly service. Clean, comfortable surroundings. My wife's favorite place to eat on Oahu.
Menu has been reduced significantly since last patronage. Missed some old favorite items.
