I was at the Brown Palace Hotel for a meeting and ate twice at the Ship Tavern because of its convenience. The lunch was superb...a beautiful lobster salad sandwich with delicious onion rings. My dinner was good...scallops carbonara...but overpriced for the portion, which came with no salad or bread.
Wonderful experience. For an appetizer we had the oysters on the half-shell and they were very good. Then when our main courses arrived they were really tasty. In all we had the prime rib (very good), the shrimp scampy (pretty good), the scallops (hands-down the best dish), and the mussels (very good). We topped it off with an excellent Malbec and were very please with the overall experience. Amazing staff and great food!
This was our second time in two months dining at the Ships Tavern. Aside from the glitch with the host, once we settled in our booth everyone was spot on. I had made a reservation requesting a booth first, then a table with a banquette and lastly a regular table but no high top table. We were a few minutes early so I had no problem waiting. However, others came in and were seated at good locations. When he came back to us we were seated at a table/banquette on the main traffic pattern and with a cold breeze. I did say something to the host that I was not happy. After a minute or two, a booth opened up and I asked to move and they accommodated my request. From this point forward, everything was excellent! With the booth move, our server was Riley. We had her before and she was everything you would want. Her menu knowledge is absolutely spot on. She is friendly, extremely efficient , and just a pleasure! We were so happy to have her. Our food was just as good as it was the first time. Consistency is prevalent. Taste is yummy and value is there. The lobster salad is just deleicious. This has become one of my all time favorite places in Denver. We also tried afternoon tea at the Brown Palace and it was ok. I'm glad we tried it but I would not return for tea. Dinner at the Ships Tavern was delicious! My daughter had the BP mule and she was pleased with it. Not overly sweet, refreshing and just outstanding. The manager stopped by to say hello and welcomed us back. All in all an excellent evening.
Slow service , waited an hour for the dinners ,..3 service mistakes ,...one entree was over the top the other was below average... was comped for one beer and an appetizer,.. notified the waiter it was my wife's birthday he graciously provided a cream "B" in a to go Box....the waiter was polite but clearly not on top of his game ...would not chose it for a dinner spot again...would go there for drinks,..
Very quiet as they turn the volume off on the TVs, which is nice, and the place was almost empty except for the bar. Food is great. Service was great. If you can't get into another Brown Palace eatery, this is an excellent choice. The roast beef was enough for the 5th Army to eat!
Entree prices are ridiculously high. Especially when the quality is sub par. Fish and chips entree is a deep fried mess. Extremely thick coating. Could not tell the difference between the seafood and the fries. Server and manager were very apologetic and pleasant.
Feels a bit outdated and overpriced. Food was okay, a bit underwhelming for the price. Classic bar, great selection of cocktails. In hindsight would have maybe had a drink to check a Denver icon off my local bucket list but would have had a much higher quality and enjoyable meal for the price elsewhere.
Quick lunch with friends before visiting the Molly Brown House. I had the crab cakes which were delicious! We were the first ones in the restaurant at about 11:15 am, so it was quiet and the service was fantastic! Enjoyed be able to chat with our server. We walked around the hotel lobby and other restaurants afterwards. High Tea looks like something I might want to try..... All in all, a very enjoyable time.
Good food and good service.
Parts of the restaurant were in bad repair (broken shutters) worn, nicked or looking well used. In general the entire hotel was in need of some work (water damaged ceilings, worn chairs, nicked and gouged furniture, etc. etc). In my mind, not a four star facility.
Beer came in a cracked glass .... it was replaced at no charge.
Although our waitperson was well groomed and her clothes fit (she was also very pleasant) many of the hotel staff appeared to be poorly groomed and working in uniforms that did not fit ....... sloppy.
Our table was ready on time and we were immediately seated. The menu was interesting and provided good choices for all of our party. I had a beef burger vice the bison burger thinking that at this price it must be quite special. What arrived looked and tasted exactly like the burger that I cook on the grill. I asked for medium and received half of that ... the other half was well done. Others had the prime rib sandwich (good), calimarie (good) and one other entree. Server was very attentive and tried hard to fix anything that needed attention. Highly recommend going but don't order the burger.
Started with the mussels and French onion soup. Both were excellent. Our daughters had the petite filet with mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. They ate everything and that was delicious too. We also enjoyed the salmon and scallops entrees. Will definitely be back!
Not sure who was to blame for 2 meals being over cooked (ahi tuna and $45 filet) as well as the sweet potato fries. They did replace the meal, but everyone was done by the time it got back so we had it boxed up to go.
They only had ONE server for FATHERS DAY! We felt so sorry for her, as she was doing her best. The manager helped out some as well. There were 8 of us there, still had a good time but disappointed in the wait and SOME of the food.
The Ship Tavern is always a pleasurable treat. As expected with any aspect of the Brown Palace experience, the staff is professional, personable, attentive, and top-notch. Whether you are there for lunch, dinner, or a relaxing bite in between, the food is always outstanding. This place has been my favorite downtown eatery for years, and I expect it will remain that way for years to come.
I have great memories of the Ship Tavern. Great ambiance, excellent food, excellent service. However, it's pricey. But I guess I always expect that because it's in the Brown Palace. This time, it seemed extraordinarily noisy. I love the place, but it's an every now and then experience, because of the prices and the noise.
Had a marvelous dinner with the hubbs here before hitting the symphony. The prime rib was large enough to choke a lion and the salmon was stunning. We are not foodies at all but appreciate a well cooked and filling meal. Couldn't finish either order, but we have gone back to attempt it again. It pleased my Norseman so the Ship Tavern gets a gold star.
The menu was an interesting mix of sandwiches, bar eats, and higher priced entrees. I had the risotto with salmon and my colleague has the filet. We had a vanilla porter that was not the best and was left on the table. A man asked us how our food tasted, but before it was even tasted. I probably wouldn't go back with all the other options around.
The Ship's Tavern is a wonderful restaurant that has been around forever and has a lot of history. Their prime rib is the best, but just as good as the open faced prime rib sandwich. Ask for Albert, he has been their for a long time, and in my opinion is the best server there. Piano bar at night was nice but I don't know how often he is there to play. Great place to stop in for just a drink too.
It was Mother's Day, and the Ship Tavern was one of the few restaurants I researched that had any available tables. Perhaps it was because the majority of cooks were busy preparing meals for hundreds of other diners at elaborate buffet stations throughout the hotel, but I felt that the kitchen staff was not entirely focused on our meals. My initial cut of beef tenderloin, which I had ordered medium rare, was one of the worst meat offerings I have ever tasted, grossly overcooked and tough as shoe leather. To the restaurant's credit, the wait staff offered to have the chef try again, but this time the tenderloin arrived practically raw.
For the prices charged for a meal, the Brown Palace should be able to do a lot better.
Had lunch for Mother's Day and was amazed. I didn't have high food expectations but I was amazed at the quality of the food. Our server was Riley and she was delightful, professional, friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. We opted for seasonal veggies as an appetizer. I had the Lobster Salad without bun over lettuce with BP chips. Yummy! My daughter had the Rueben Sandwich and I took a bite and was amazed at the leanness and flavor. The rye bread was extremely tasty. Our appetizer was delicious but what stole the appetizer was the basil pesto. We both could have eaten a bowl of it! For dessert we shared the black bottom pie and still took half home. I only wish the dark chocolate layer was a bit thicker....this pie was scrumptious. All in all I will definitely be back....made another reservation!
The food we received was disappointing and over priced. The shrimp scampi was awful...It looked and tasted like shrimp and canola oil...no garlic, no butter or wine reduction was evident. Pretty bad. The others ordered the buffalo steak which was good but not great.
Salads were very good. The calamari appetizer was excellent, the crab cakes seemed under done. So sorry to be so blunt but we thought you should know.
